Academic Experience/Employment History
1992-1996: Iowa State University; Reproductive Physiology Laboratory under the direction of
Dr. Stephen P. Ford. Undergraduate research assistant. Duties included: the organization
and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies, assisting with surgical preparation,
anesthesia and post-operative care for pigs and sheep. Received laboratory training in
media and buffer preparation, and in the care and use of a variety of research equipment.
Participated in sample evaluation via histologic and radioimmunoassay methods.

1998-2000: Iowa State University: PhD candidate under the guidance of Dr. Stephen. P. Ford.
Responsible for management and supervision of undergraduate students, surgical
preparation, tissue collection and processing for general histology,
immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, RNase protection assay and
radioimmunoassay development and validation. Designed and executed animal
experiments.
2000-2003: PhD program transferred to the University of Wyoming when Dr. Ford relocated.
Prior to his arrival in Laramie, I set up and organized the new laboratory, purchased
equipment and designed and initiated animal experiments at the new location. Completed
requirements for PhD. Dissertation entitled: The Impacts of Placental Size and
Vascularity on Litter Size in the Pig. During this period, the Center for the Study of Fetal
Programming was established. Designed and executed experiments looking at the
impacts of maternal undernutrition on fetal and placental growth and development in
sheep and cattle.
August 2003-April 2004: A joint post-doctorate with Drs. Stephen P. Ford and Lawrence P.
Reynolds at the University of Wyoming and NDSU, respectively. My main focus of
research was to investigate angiogenesis in the ovine and bovine placentome during
maternal undernutrition during early to mid pregnancy. Further, I was gaining technical
expertise in evaluating vascularity of the ovulatory follicle and corpus luteum of the
sheep. Methods included: whole placentome perfusion, immunohistochemistry, image
analysis, real time RT-PCR, and further surgical techniques.
April 2004-July 2010: Assistant Professor of Reproductive Physiology in Department of Animal

Scientific Integrity—BIOC 796
A team taught course to graduate students and post-doctorates that is a survey of contemporary
issues relating to responsible conduct in research including academic integrity, mentoring,
scientific record keeping, and genetic technology. I teach a lecture about the use of animals in
Kimberly A. Vonnahme, PhD

research and the policies of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. It has been taught
in the Fall 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 semesters.
2. Quality of teaching (administration and peer evaluation)
2011: Participated in the [cla]ssroom academy 101: introduction to performance talks by Marc
Chun; 2 day workshop; NDSU campus.
2007: Participated in the 2007 Peer Review of Teaching Program. Dr. Edward Deckard was my
mentor.
3. Curriculum Development
1) Use of Interactive Video Network (IVN) and distance teaching to Dickinson State University
(2004-present)
2) I participated in the CAFSNR Distance Ed Committee (2004-2010)
3) I updated, and continue to improve, the Physiology of Reproduction (ANSC 463/663) course
4) I initiated Research in Reproduction course in 2005, an independent course that allows
students to get a hands-on look at research in the field of reproductive biology. In 2015, the
Department of Animal Sciences will have a formal Research course for faculty that are interested
in participating. I will continue to do so.
5) I updated Reproductive Management (ANSC 464) in 2005. I used this class as a “capstone”
course, developing a course where students worked with local livestock producers to address
reproductive management questions/concerns. In 2010, the last class was taught as production
courses moved from 2 to 3 credits. If applicable, reproductive management was incorporated into
those courses.
