Fitting in flying time
Weather watching a big part
of Maritime aircrew training
Captain Angie Thomas,
404 Long Range Patrol &
Training Squadron
In past years, cancellation of training flights due to
serviceability and inclement
weather at 14 Wing Greenwood have been known to
cause significant delays in the
planned timeline for Maritime
Operational Aircrew Training
(MOAT) at 404 Long Range
Patrol & Training Squadron,
especially during the winter.
To ensure the success of
flying operations during the
course, a significant number of
the MOAT flying requirements
are concentrated upfront, reducing the effects of cancelled
missions later. Mitigating
effects of Greenwood winter
weather during the course is a
far greater challenge. January
14 to 22, a MOAT crew from
404 Squadron got a change of
scenery – the “sunny” Comox
Valley. The training crew,
See page 8
consisting primarily of students from 407 Long Range
Captain Eric St. Georges was hands-on during a January igloo building demonstration in Canada’s north. Crews from 413 (Transport & Rescue) Squadron, 14 Wing Patrol Squadron, as well as inGreenwood, and Ranger units from Puvirnituq, Akulivik and Inukjuak participated structors from 404 Squadron,
in a joint search and rescue exercise.
Lieutenant (USCG) J.L.Gale travelled “home” to 19 Wing

Submitted
Comox for training. This is the
second time in recent MOATs
crews from Greenwood have
conducted training in this
manner. It is made possible by
the generous coordination and
support of 19 Wing Comox, as
well as 407 Squadron operations and maintainers.
The trip was a success on
all fronts, as students received the added motivation
of training from their home
base, while MOAT was pushed
forward with dedicated aircraft
flown on both coasts during
the week. Having a crew deployed to Comox enabled the
two MOAT crews remaining in
Greenwood to make maximum
use of the aircraft during the
same time frame, as fewer
crews were completing for the
same resource.
In an ironic turn, the weather
in Comox during the week was
unusually cold, with blizzard
conditions – more expectant of
Greenwood in January, proving that, regardless of location,
the challenges of winter flying
in Canada remain.

Q&A on Canada’s military
history a call to remember
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
Grade 9 Berwick student Kaleb Perry credits a personal
“fascination” for any success he
has scoring points in a Canadian
military history quiz competition.
“Everything I’ve learned hasn’t
been taught to me in school –
I’ve learned it all myself,” he
says. “And, it’s fun!”
Perry was one of several dozen Valley junior high students
invited to compete in the 2012
Call to Remembrance competition, organized by the Zone 8
and 9 Royal Canadian Legion associations, representing Legions
from Windsor to Clementsport.
This year’s event was hosted
by the Kingston branch, and
six teams entered – three from
Berwick, Horton, Kings-Edgehill
and Pine Ridge.
Answering – or, trying to
answer - detailed and obscure
questions on Canada’s involvement in everything from the
Crimean, Boer and First and
Second World wars to the Indian
Mutiny, peacekeeping and the
more recent Gulf and Afghanistan missions is a big challenge.
“Incorrect!” calls out moderator Douglas Moore over and over
again through the 40-minute
rounds between two teams.
“It’s not discouraging – I just
want to do better next time,”
says Perry, on his school team
for the third year in a row. “I
scored 20 points this morning.
WE were second last year, and
I’m hoping for first this year.”
That’s the attitude the Legionnaires are looking for. Many of
them sit in the audience, just
as stumped as the students, as
Moore reads through close to
1,000 questions amassed over
the years.
“If a kid gets one, that means
something,” says this year’s
organizer, Kingston member
Bert Carpenter. “We go through
about 75 questions in a game.
Some of them are only Grade 6
kids, and they’re doing a damn
fine job. We’ll see some of them
next year.”
Moore agrees.
“They try, and it doesn’t bother me at all if they don’t get the
answer. I’ve talked to teachers
and told them not to feel bad
either, if their kids don’t do well,
and I’ve had the teachers tell me,
‘It’s not the winning, it’s that
they’re here.’”
Joe Murphy of Lawrencetown
has looked after the questions
since 2001, sitting through all
the rounds to make notes on
which questions are repeatedly
missed by the students. He’ll
spend all the next year reviewing the wording, checking the
answers and even replacing
weaker questions with new
material. Every fall, as Legions
approach their local junior high
schools to invite teams to enter
Call to Remembrance, they refer
potential teams to the on-line
catalogue of research material

becomes the students’ study
tool.
While some schools put together a team that meets in
study breaks or as an extracurricular activity in the weeks
leading up the competition,
Kings-Edgehill has made it a
real commitment: students there
either enrol in the school’s Cadet
program, or they join the Call to
Remembrance team.
“I didn’t know any of this to
start, either,” says Kings-Edgehill coach Steve Mayo. He retired
last June as a master corporal
with 14 Wing Greenwood’s 404
Long Range Patrol & Training
Squadron, but he’s been coaching the Kings-Edgehill team now
for three years. During the day’s
lunch break, he stepped to the
microphone to tell students the
history they are being quizzed
on has far-reaching roots: this
same day, in 1945, his squadron
lost 10 members in a Norwegian
fjord, shot down by Germans.
“Black Friday” was the single
worst day of losses suffered
by 404 Squadron during the
Second World War.
“Take a moment to remember
them,” Mayo said.
Carpenter says “this sort of
program should be brought to
light.
“Canada’s part in the world
and wars should be part of
school curriculum.”
Kings-Edgehill finished the
day’s competition in first place,
followed by Berwick #1 in second place and Horton in third.
The awards banquet was held
at the Kingston Legion February 23.

Checkpoint detour work
‘challenging’
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
Yes, it’s bumpy, a little
muddy and a slow go.
14 Wing Greenwood engineering officer Rick Nippard is
the first to admit construction
of a new checkpoint closer
to the operations side of the
base is an inconvenience, but
the project has been on the
infrastructure priority list for
several years, and will, in the
long run, make base traffic run
more smoothly.
Master Warrant Officer Murray Hiltz, of 14 Air Maintenance
Squadron, received the Order of Military Merit, the level of
Member (post-nominal: M.M.M.) in recognition of exceptional
service or performance of duty from Governor General and
Commander-in-Chief of Canada, David Johnston, at the Order of
Military Merit investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall, on December
2, 2011. The Order of Military Merit was created in 1972, to
recognize distinctive merit and exceptional service displayed by
the men and women of the Canadian Forces, both Regular and
Reserve. The Order has three levels of membership: Commander
(C.M.M.), Officer (O.M.M.) and Member (M.M.M.). Rideau Hall

February 27, 2012
Phase II construction of the
checkpoint – a new building,
gate, parking and approaches
– began in December along
Ad Astra Way. The existing
checkpoint on the east side of
the health centre construction
will be replaced with the new
gate by the end of June. Future
phases should see another
access road into the base,
off Highway 201 before the
checkpoint, and perhaps the
siting of pass control with the
checkpoint.
Nippard says, though, the
temporary road diverting traffic – about 1,500 passings a
day – off Ad Astra Way near
the checkpoint construction
site, has been a challenge.
“It’s dirt, with class A gravel,
and we send the graders out
as we can – but it’s all very
weather dependant,” Nippard
says. “Frozen ground is great,
but the freeze/ thaw we have
been having this winter is
hard. That’s when potholes
develop.”
Nippard reminds people
travelling through the con-
struction zone of the changes
in speed during work: from
the existing gate to the work
site, and then from the work
site to operations areas, it has
been reduced to 50 kilometres
per hour. In the construction
zone itself, vehicle speed is 35
km/h. The reduction ensures
the safety of workers in the
construction zone, as they are
working on and near the road.
“The project is going well,
we’re on schedule,” Nippard
says, adding he thanks people
for their patience.
Hercules fire prompts fleet check
Nine Canadian Forces personnel are safe after evacuating from a CC-130 Hercules
aircraft that caught fire during
take off while training at the
Naval Air Station Key West in
the United States February 21.
The aircraft and crew are
from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron of 17 Wing Winnipeg successfully conducted
an emergency landing after
the aircrew noted an onboard
fire. Naval Air Station Key West
Fire & Emergency Services
extinguished the fire, and damage to the aircraft is reported
as being extensive. A flight
safety investigation has been
launched from National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.
The CC-130 Hercules aircraft and crews were operating
in the area to provide air-toair refuelling support for the
training of new CF-18 fighter
pilots from 4 Wing Cold Lake,
conducting essential training
focused on air combat tactics
and air interdiction missions.
The Commander of 1 Canadian Air Division has directed
the Hercules will conduct operational flights only until more
is known about the cause of
this event, with flights in support of training resuming once
it is clear it is safe to do so.
There are three Hercules
stationed at 14 Wing Greenwood, with 413 (Transport &
Rescue) Squadron.

International Women’s Day celebrations planned
March 8 through March
11, four days of collaborative effort mark International
Women’s Day.
The Women’s Place Resource Centre kicks off the
celebrations at the Desmond
Piers Theatre in Cornwallis
Park, with the presentation
of a new play written by
Hal Theriault, Travelling the
Road. The play was inspired
by “The Road Here: Stories
from Senior Women in Ru-
ral Nova Scotia” edited and
photographed by Rachel
Brighton and published by
the Western Area Women‘s
Coalition in 2008. These are
the stories of real women:
their lives, their loves, their
families and their hardships
in rural Nova Scotia. Produced by the Digby Players
and directed by Theriault,
opening night March 8, International Women’s Day,
at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are
available at the door, $14,
the bar will be open and a
small reception is planned to
following the performance.
This particular event is a
fundraiser for the Frances
Mills-Clements Bursary,
managed by the Western
Area Women’s Coalition/
The Women’s Place Resource Centre and sponsored by the Nova Scotia
Advisory Council for the
Status of Women.
Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., Kings Theatre
will screen Iron Lady, $7 for
adults and $6 for children.
More information is available from Geoff Keymer at
Kings Theatre.
Saturday is a celebration
of women everywhere. Starting at 10 a.m., Valerie Davis,
our honourary town crier will
introduce the key players for
the day. Leading participants
are Becky Little, Barbara
Schmeisser and Alexa Jaffurs, all accomplished female
artist blacksmiths. Two anvils will be set up in Market
Square, and on-lookers will
be urged to participate: heat
the iron and, when perfectly
hot, strike! The Women’s
Place Resource Centre, 228
St. George Street, will be
open for visitors, as will
the lobby of King’s Theatre with a presentation of
Women’s Ironwork from
the Maritimes, lectures and

Editorial changes to the

The Friends of Greenwood

you for your dedicated hard
work. A noteworthy new title is
“Death Comes to Pemberley,”
by P.D. James. This book is
a real treat for all those Jane
Austen fans who thought they
had nothing more to hope for
but another weird aberration
along the lines of Pride and
Prejudice and Zombies. Here is
a story to savour. Unlike many
Discover Driving
of the writers of the countless
spinoffs that followed the
1813 publication of Pride and
Prejudice, James captures
the cadences and storytelling quirks of Austen, paying
homage to the original author
while adding her own touches
as she signals the impending
disasters in her mystery.
David Adams Richards new
novel, “Incidents in the Life of
Markus Paul,” tells an intricate
story about the miscarriage of
justice in the case of one man’s
death in a shipping yard in New
Brunswick in 1985. The novel
is a meticulous study of the
various half truths, political
machinations and outright
lies that lead to the unfair incrimination of one man, Roger
Savage, in the death of Hector
Penniac, a promising young
Micmac man from a local First
Nations reserve.
And Elizabeth George’s “Believing the Lie” is an intelligent
book, clipped and precise, every word chosen with care: and
a cool, clever book that needs
concentration and a sharp brain
to unravel! Along the way to
solving the crime, we meet
some finely drawn characters
who emerge as real people with
faults and frailties. George is
the connoisseur’s crime writer.

Cool class
Joint training for Canadian
Rangers, 413 Squadron
Captain Bertrand Thibodeau,
413 Transport and
Rescue Squadron
From January 23 to 27,
search and rescue (SAR)
crews from 413 (Transport &
Rescue) Squadron, 14 Wing
Greenwood, and Ranger units
from Puvirnituq, Akulivik and
Inukjuak gathered in Puvirnituq to participate in a joint SAR
exercise and Arctic survival
training.
The first portion of the exercise consisted of a search exercise to demonstrate the 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group’s
(2 CRPG) search capabilities,
and how the Rangers assist in
searches, as well as the testing
of their communications platform to better integrate it into
the SAR system. The search
scenario also allowed 413
Squadron to demonstrate to
the Rangers how the squadron
operates and deploys its SAR
assets. 2 CRPG command staff
saw firsthand the complexity in
running a SAR mission from
the air. It was a great learning
experience.
The second part of the exercise consisted of an Arctic
survival scenario for the 413
Squadron crews. The Inuit from
2 CRPG instructed the aircrews
in the art of building igloos,
scavenging for edibles plants,
ice fishing and general survival
in the harsh cold of the Arctic. Master Corporal Brad

Flag day
Maple leaf, military share respect
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
The national flag is one of the first
things you associate with the Canadian
Forces, and it’s Sergeant Clyde Baggs’ job
to make sure the colours are represented
well at 14 Wing Greenwood.
February 15, National Flag Day, the
base’s maple leaf flag was actually given
to a retiring CF member as part of his
depart with dignity recognition. Baggs, the
wing chief warrant officer’s administrative
assistant, replaced it with another bright,
red and white flag.
“I have pride in the flag – it’s why I’m
wearing a uniform,” Baggs says. He joined
the Regular Force in 1983, then the Reserves in 2010. While he spent most of his
time as an Army man, he’s now working
with the Royal Canadian Air Force. As he
reports daily for work, he looks up.
“If the flag is ripped or faded, it should
be changed- and it should be burned.
“You should show proper respect for
the flag. As a military member, if I see any
flag going up or down, I should pay proper
respect. If I’m in uniform, I should salute.”
When 14 Wing’s national flag is raised
or lowered, traffic around headquarters
Page 11
February 27, 2012
is actually commanded to stop: military
members get out of their vehicles and do
just what Baggs describes, while civilians
are encouraged to “pay attention.”
The three headquarters poles regularly
fly the national flag, the Canadian Forces’
flag and the Royal Canadian Air Force
Roundel. If the wing commander is on
base, his pennant is flown. If higher ranking officials visit – royal representatives,
the minister of national defence, defence
staff officers; their pennants are flown.
Base units fly their own flags in front of
their offices.
Baggs also looks after more significant
flag flying protocol: flags are flown at half
mast on the National Day of Mourning,
Remembrance Day and upon any directive
from Ottawa or the head of 1 Canadian Air
Division. The base doesn’t general make
a change for other significant events or
passings, but Baggs says there is no hard
and fast etiquette.
“My neighbour, his flag was at half
mast for every one of Canada’s military
members killed in Afghanistan, from
their death to their funeral. It’s a personal
thing, and something he felt he could do.
I respect that.”
Sergeant
Clyde Baggs

National Cadets
take on Martock
biathlon course
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
Sharp shooters and fast
skiers will be on course at Ski
Martock March 3 to 10, as the
25th National Cadet Biathlon
Championship will be hosted
in Nova Scotia for the first time
in many years.
Captain Doug Keirstead, public affairs officer for the Atlantic
Regional Cadet Support Group,
says the biathlon competition
has been held in Valcartier for
quite some time: “With the
new biathlon course built here
in Nova Scotia at Martock for
the 2011 Canada Games, there
was some interest in using the
facility and coming here.”
The site also works because
of its close proximity to the
Halifax Stanfield International
Airport, and Camp Aldershot,
north of Kentville, where competitors will be housed.
Keirstead is expecting 200
Cadets and 90 coaches and
competition staff from across
the country. Cadets from
Windsor will represent the
Valley on the Nova Scotia
team, with the potential yet to
see Cadets from Greenwood
and Kentville on board as event
staff or officials. Competitors
would have had to qualify for
their provincial teams through
earlier competition.
March 4 is the first day at
Martock, for training and the
opening ceremonies (2 p.m.).
A mass start race will be held
March 5, with the pursuit race
and awards ceremony (6 p.m.
at Camp Aldershot) March 6.
March 8, there is a relay race,
and March 9 is the patrol race,
closing and awards ceremony.
March 7 is an open day for
cultural activities, as Cadets
will tour Ross Farm and Halifax.
Throughout the week, more
Nova Scotia cultural opportunities will be served up in themed
Acadian, Gaelic, African and
Mi’kmaq dinners; Scottish
dancing and Highland games.
14 Air Maintenance Squadron, 14 Wing Greenwood,
will work with the event and
post video and images daily
to the Canadian Forces Image
Gallery, Flickr and the event
website itself. There will also
be active Twitter and Facebook
links to follow the action.

Comforting the crying baby
Kim Dixon,
GMFRC Coordinator of child
and youth services
Coping with a baby’s crying can be very frustrating.
Because your baby can’t talk,
crying is one way which they
communicate their needs to
you. Usually the cries are for
food or a clean diaper; however, sometimes their cries are
for comfort.
As soon as crying begins,
try to figure out what is wrong.
f you respond quickly to your
crying baby then he/ she learns
to trust you. Babies do not cry

cause they are trying to annoy
you. The best way to deal with
a crying baby is to know what
to do. The first thing is to ensure your baby’s basic needs
are met: does their diaper need
changing, are they hungry,
thirsty, warm, cold, or sick?
A few simple tips to on how
you can calm you’re crying
baby:
• Try and stay calm: babies
can sense tension.
• Gently walk, dance, or rock
your baby
• Take your baby for a ride in
the stroller or for a drive in
the car
• Check the baby’s clothing –
make sure it’s not too tight
or that fingers and toes are
not bent
• Lay baby tummy down on
your lap and gently rub or
tap her/ his back
• Turn on music, run the
vacuum, hair dryer, or water – babies like consistent,

faire.

autre jour.
Le CRFMG propose un service
de garde occasionnelle pour
des moments comme ceux-là.
Les parents peuvent appeler
et réserver un créneau horaire
pour leur enfant. Si vous pensez
que votre bébé a des coliques
ou de la fièvre, ou qu’il est
malade, communiquez avec
votre fournisseur de soins de
santé et faites examiner votre
bébé sans tarder.

Fun By The Numbers
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out
the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

As part of the Our Community Our
Health campaign, the Valley Regional
Hospital Foundation and the Valley
Hospice Foundation will hold A Roman
Holiday gala April 14 at Camp Aldershot.
“The $8 million capital campaign
is currently $6.1 million closer to the
goal,” says fundraising coordinator
Diane Schofield. “Proceeds from the
Italian-themed event will support the
campaign to redevelop Valley Regional
Hospital, and build and furnish a hospice and palliative care centre.”
The Nova Swing Band will provide
music with an Italian flair throughout
the evening. Along with the delicious
food and wine, the organizers are thrilled
to welcome back Holly Carr, who will
paint a work of art using music as her
inspiration for auction. Virtual auction
items are equipment and furnishing
needs identified as part of the campaign.
Purchasers of virtual items will receive a
full tax receipt. The event’s grand prize
is a travel voucher valued at $3,000
towards a trip to Rome (or to roam the
Maritimes); your ticket purchase for the
evening enters you in this draw.
Committee organizers are excited to
have vendors Cara Mia and Café Central with gelato, Pete Luckett to teach
us about olive oil and Just Us serving
Italian coffee. Music, wine and hors d’
oeuvres will be offered to guests when
they arrive at 6 p.m.
For information on A Roman Holiday
and to reserve tickets ($75, with a receipt for $30) phone 678-5414. There is
an early bird draw for tickets purchased
by March 14.

Combien de portes une éducation
en français à ouvre-t-elle vos enfants?
Toutes!

linked to leadership, effective practices and high expectations for all their
students. Did you know that CSAP students’ success rates in French, English
and Mathematics increase year after year due to program and board initiatives in
literacy and numeracy?
If you, your spouse or one of your grandparents is Acadian or Francophone, or
that you answer to the other CSAP admission criteria, this is the perfect
opportunity to offer your children cultural, social and economic life advantages.
You may achieve this by sending your children to one of the Early Childhood
Francophone centres, the CSAP pre-school program (Grandir en français),
CSAP elementary or secondary schools, Université Sainte-Anne where they
offer a French language post-secondary education at both the collegiate and
university levels or one of the courses in Adult education.
It’s your heritage, so why not take advantage of it? Visit the school nearest you
listed below to learn about offering a better future for your child. Call the school
for an appointment if the date of the open house is not convenient for you.
