A: There’s never too much, silly. That’s why Montreal’s Just For Laughs is the best comedy fest: because it’s the world’s biggest—and it’s even bigger if your funny bone is bilingual. As always, the festival is set to tickle you in umpteen ways: star-studded galas, free street performances, the Comedia film festival, wacky installations, and shows such as Rick Miller’s Bigger Than Jesus (from July 12). The official festival runs from July 6 to 31, but every year there seems to be more spillover on either end: starting in May, the organizers will present plays including a reprise of last year’s anagrammatic hit, Le Mystère d’Irma Vep. 1 TOUS LES ÉTÉS, LES GRANDES POINTURES comiques des univers francophone et anglo-saxon se donnent rendez-vous à Montréal, pour ce qui est considéré comme le plus imposant festival d’humour au monde. Ever since the Royal Visit in 1979, Halifax has held the Nova Scotia International Tattoo, in which civilians and members of the military get together to put on a big, brassy celebration featuring bagpipers, drummers, fanfares, choirs, dancers, acrobats, plays, and military parades. This year’s 2000-plus participants will include visitors from Scotland, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, and other countries. Just look up and spot a bird, say modern scientists, and you’ve sighted a descendant of the giant reptilians that once ruled the Earth. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto is holding a show that explores the relationships between birds and dinosaurs, featuring 30odd astonishing fossils recently unearthed in China. The remarkable exhibit takes you back 125 million years to the first known appearance of feathers and the beginnings of avian flight; in addition to the fossils, the museum is displaying photos, videos, and full-scale models of extinct creatures. If you’ve ever read an Asterix comic, you probably have an image in your mind right now—and you’ll no doubt appreciate this opportunity to learn more about this fascinating time with a visit to this exclusive show at Pointe-àCallière, the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History. With 200 artifacts from sites in the vicinity of Lyon (ancient Lugdunum, the capital of Gaul), Encounters in Roman Gaul paints a vivid portrait of Gallo-Roman society almost two millennia ago. And you’ll have the chance to meet a pottery merchant, a freed slave, a noblewoman, and even the Emperor Claudius, who was a native of Lugdunum. 6 7 5 SPANISH AMPHORA (1 CENTURY) | AMPHORE D'ESPAGNE (1 SIÈCLE) ST ER 6 IMPERIAL BUST (3RD CENTURY) BUSTE IMPÉRIAL (IIIE SIÈCLE) 7 BOWL OF THE GODS (1 ST CENTURY) | GOBELET AUX DIEUX (1ER SIÈCLE) May 17–October 9 | Du 17 mai au 9 octobre (514) 872-9150 / www.pacmusee.qc.ca SAINT PETER AND THE VATICAN:THE LEGACY OF THE POPES SAINT-PIERRE ET LE VATICAN / L’HÉRITAGE DES PAPES 8 8 CHALICE OF POPE PIUS IX CALICE DU PAPE PIE IX IF YOU WON’T BE ABLE to visit the awe-inspiring Vatican this year, you can at least see some of its wondrous treasures by going no farther than Montreal. The crypt at the city’s Notre Dame Basilica is the venue for this exhibition of some 300 artworks and historical objects—sculptures, paintings, vestments, jewels, and a reproduction of Saint Peter’s tomb—that rarely leave Rome. Organized thematically, the show provides an overview of the history of the Catholic Church and the two millennia of the papacy, all within spaces designed to recreate the appearance and atmosphere of the catacombs beneath the Sistine Chapel.
