Excited Fan Masturbation
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Hello Trevor !
Max a
S: Pourquoi avoir choisi d'intituler cet album Everblack?
choses. “ (Trevor Strnad)
S: Avec la chanson "In Hell Is Where She Waits For Me", tu as pour la première fois abordé
le
meurtre
dont
le
groupe
a
tiré
son
nom
[note:
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affaire_du_Dahlia_noir] !
Excited Fan Masturbation
As if nothing happened, the Americans of The Black Dahlia Murder are
building their own little path for ten years now, with a new record every two
years, always followed by numerous tours where the fans are crowding
around them, more numerous each time, taking advantage of the madness
of this band that's driving at top speed on the road to success. In 2011, the
band made us a beautiful gift with some modern stenches, Ritual, that laid
the foundations of a new path that Trevor Strnad and his friends chose to
follow, and after the success of the album the band once again entered the
studio to create what would be its sixth record, to be released this year, it's
name: Everblack! Always working with Metal Blade Records, The Black
Dahlia Murder indulged itself and offers us a new really well controled disc,
with great quality, maybe a little bit less easy to digest than its predecessor,
but which clearly has the characteristics of a great record. The frontman has
once again accepted to answer our questions, for our greatest pleasure!
Conversation with Trevor Strnad (vocals)
Interview and editing by Sponge
Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Hi Trevor! Last time we talk, it was approximatively two years ago,
for the release of Ritual, so... what happened in the life of The Black Dahlia Murder since
then?
Trevor Strnad: Oh man, so much things happened in two years! We lost two members at
different moments, we found new guys, we did some awesome tours. We had a lot of
great new opportunities with the success of Ritual, it's clearly been the biggest album
cycle we've ever had. That was awesome! The new guys have been killer live, and then
killer in the studio too, and now we are very excited about the release of this new album,
and we are ready to get back to work!
S: So you are promotioning a new album called Everblack, that we were eagerly waiting
for! Now we got it, we listened to it, so what would you first tell us about this new creation?
Trevor: Well, obviously, it still sounds like us, that's what I'd like to say first and foremost ! In
spite of the two musicians who left the band, it's ever black, it's still the same band that
you felt in love with ! About the title, it really represents the fact that it's still the same sound
and the same style, you know. I'm very proud of this new record, I think that Ritual was a
step in the right direction for us, it allowed us expand our horizons, it was the first time we
used samples between the songs, that we integrated strings and different other
symphonic elements, and even other instruments, it was the first time that our songs were
so varied and dynamic. It started as a risk with took with Ritual, but it quickly turned as a
good choice, and now we take everything even further, we give more space to Ryan to
solo, the songs are even more varied and melodic, and catchier, you know! The idea is us
being still so brutal and technical, but in the same time catchy, keeping the sound that
we've established for years now. That's the next chapter! That's the most developed thing
we've done since the beginning of the band, and I'm a proud father!
S: Accordint to me, the most important fact about this record is that Ryan Williams and
Shannon Lucs have been replaced by Max Lavelle et Alan Cassidy ! As the list of The Black
Dahlia Murder ex-members is getting longer and longer, how did you live these new lineup changes, and in what way did it affect your music?
Trevor: Well, I would say that the idea was that it would affect our music positively, 'cause
we already had our sound established, and we follow a certain standard for our music, as
everything we do has to come through me and Brian, we are sort of the ultimate quality
control, if you want. So even if these new musicians arrived in the band, we knew that it
would sound the same, et they also knew that they had to sound the same! But I love
what the guys brought to the table ! Max brought a really crushing bass sound, more
overdriven that we used to have in the past, it makes the heavy parts heavier, it's a really
mean sound, and Max is also a awesome live performer. Alan, he's a very young creative
and talented guy, and I think what he brought to our music is the fills, his fills are more
creative and developed, and that's what makes his style unique. I really think that he's
gonna turn heads with his creativity on this album.
S: Why did you choose to entitle this record Everblack? Is it a sign that The Black Dahlia
Murder is still searching for the perfect darkness in its music?
Trevor: Well, we're still evil, we still do horror, and this new album contains a lot of macabre
elements, in fact nothing has changed in spite of the line-up changes. That was something
very important, because people related to Bart and Shannon! Especially because of the
dvd we put out, the people felt like they knew us, you know, there's always sceptics out
there, but the proof is in the pudding, man, these songs are good and we are very proud
of how they came out. I think that the people who will listen to them will love them.
“ Ritual was a step in the right direction for us, it allowed us expand our
horizons. It started as a risk with took, but it quickly turned as a good choice,
and now we take everything even further. “ (Trevor Strnad)
S: Once again, you worked with Jason Suecof for the mixing and Alan Douches for the
mastering, but you ex-bassist Ryan 'Bart' Williams also participated to the mix, as he's not
in the band anyumore! Why did you choose to continue working with him?
Trevor: Well, he's always been part of the band and he participated to each studio
session, he helped to record the first Black Dahlia record, so we knew that he knows his
way around the studio, and having him with us, we know that the things are gonna come
out great. We know that this is the guy who always cracks the whip, you know. He knows
so much more than every on of us that we didn't want to loose his opinion. Having him in
the studio with us was kinda comfortable, because we're still friends, and he's also a friend
of Max, so there's no weird situation at all about that. It was a reassurance that everything
was gonna be ok ! It's really cool that we have him involved, and I really see him still
involved in the future.
S: As a real fan, I have to be honest with you and to tell you that I was a little bit scared
that the band had to be really strong and creative to make an even better album than
what you did for Ritual. And finally, Everblack is a very good record, but less catchy and
way more technical, so it's a little bit more difficult to figure out. What do you think about
that?
Trevor: That was kind of the goal in some way, to have an album that take some time to
digest. 'cause we don't want people to get it, and feel like getting all in one scoop, they
need something to discover, you know. There's definitely catchy parts and shit, but the
more you're gonna listen to it and the more it's gonna come to the surface! We wanted it
to have a replay value. We also wanted to have more technical stuff 'cause it's more fun
for us to play, and every year we grow up a bit more as players, so we try to challenge
ourselves. It's a fine line between making something that's catchy and something that's
technical, it's a balance that we try to keep.
S: This record is clearly darker than everything you've ever done before, with a really
macabre atmosphere, the guitar riffs are more heavy, with less gimmicks and high notes
than on Ritual, and more slow moments... Did you ever wanted this record to sound like
that, even before entering the studio?
Trevor: We didn't really had a plan about what it's gonna sound like but... I think that doing
slow songs and having successful slow songs is a more recent development. That was kind
of a risk that we took on Ritual, we weren't sure of how it's gonna come out, but it turned
out to be really cool live songs, and people really liked them, so it kinda influenced us to
take things even further with this one. Also we wanted an album that people can get
through all the way, you know, we don't want every song to be just blisteringly fast, 'cause
people can get bored, you know what I mean? So these last years, we tried to do
something with more variety, something that's satisfying for the listener, and it's definitely a
challenge to create something that people gonna like!
S: The thing is that these new songs are more surprising this time, with more buildups, some
quiet parts, some samples, different instruments... Has it been really easy for you to work
on these new tracks as a vocalist? Was it as easy as it's been for the previous discs?
Trevor: Yes and no, I mean, there isn't any difficulty for me to include these different
instruments, 'cause every new thing is exciting to experience. Trying the make the lyrics
match the different emotions in the songs is also a challenge! I've written so many songs
for this band that it's hard to write something that's totally fresh, you know, especially since
I use so many lyrics for a song, I've already used every terrible word! There's no other way
to say you're gonna kill someone, I've already said it in every way!
S: You said that lyrically, you tried your best to honor the band's legacy and to be as
terrible as you can. According to you, what is the most horrific text you wrote for this
record, and what did inspire you during the writing sessions?
Trevor: I have to say the most horrible song is probably “Phantom Limb Masturbation”, that
song is slighty influenced by this documentary called “Whole” [note: Visit the officiel
website there: http://www.whole-documentary.com/ ]. It's about these people who have
this corrupted image of themselves, they think that they would feel better if they have no
limbs! So they want to have an accident so their legs are hurt and they get them
removed! Or they want to have their arm chopped off, it's a really weird mental scenario.
So the song is about a character who's daydreaming about a train that's running over his
arms and legs, and about putting his lege in a tank full of sharks, and all these weird
scenarios that a normal people would never dream of. But it's definitely fun for me to write
lyrics that shock people, and to have a reputation of doing it is even more fun, people are
looking to me to scare them, and it's an awesome challenge to rise to, it's fun. Another
gruesome song if « Rape In Hatred By Vines of Thorn », and this song is about this « Evil
Dead » scene where the vines are raping the woman in the wood, the woods come alive
and rape the woman! But my version is a bit more gore, 'cause the woman is pregnant,
and the vines will pierce the womb and kinda eat the baby from inside of her, so it's a way
more extreme version of that scene! But that's what death metal is to me, it's part of what
attracted it to me as a kid, and I feel like I have to represent that for us being one of those
bands that young people learned about death metal through! I feel responsible to show
them death metal as I see it, and as I like it, because I pay so much attention to the
underground, I'm always buying albums, and I still love it! So I try to bring that to someone
lese, you know.
“ That was kind of the goal in some way, to have an album that take some
time to digest. 'cause we don't want people to get it, and feel like getting all
in one scoop, they need something to discover. “ (Trevor Strnad)
S: With the song "In Hell Is Where She Waits For Me", you tackled for the first the murder
case that the drew its new from! Why did you finally choose to sing about this fact?
Trevor: In a way, it's to kinda reinforce that everything is the same! In spite of those two
members leaving, you're gonna get the Black Dahlia Murder that you know and love! The
way this song sounds, it could be from the first record, and the song itself is saying “We're
still here.”, so in a way it was just a gift to the fans, something to get them excited, and a
way to say “Shit has not changed, this is the band that you want!”.
S: I can remember that for the release of Ritual, you made it a point of honor to create
different versions of the album, with special goodies pack for the collectors. Is it something
you'll try to do again for Everblack? Is it still financialy possible, in 2013, to do such things
as a metal band?
Trevor: It's a difficult thing to get people to buy physical copies so... the packages are just
about trying to get people excited about the releases, you know, 'cause we so badly
need to sell! So this time, we have a deluxe package where everything comes in a
gravestone, it's kinda tied to Elisabeth Shore and the first song, and the whole Black Dahlia
Murder theme and stuff, and it also comes with an evidence pack.
S: Is there a song, or a movie, or a band, that's been very influencing for you these last
months? And do you let yourself be influenced by outside sources, or do you prefer to
concentrate on your own ideas?
Trevor: I think that we're always looking at metal, and I'm not the only one in my band that
checks out bands, there's always new stuffs happening in music and that's what is exciting
for us, I fucking love it! But we just know what we have to do, we are not so influenced by
the outside, we've established our sound, now it's just like taking it to the next level, the
challenge is pretty just pushing it.
S: What are now the future plans for The Black Dahlia Murder? We know that you will play
once again here in Belgium on September 24 th so... are you happy to come back here?
Does Belgium represent something for you?
Trevor: Yeah we've always had a good time in Belgium, for sure! And we run into lots of
friends when we go through, it's always cool to see Leng Tch'e, those guys are fucking
cool! But yes, we'll just be very busy guys, we have two full tours coming up after the
actual one, we'll be back in Europe briefly for the fall, we are working on the line-up for
that, but it's gonna be a great death metal show. And then we'll have another headlining
tour here in the States, so... we'll stay busy as hell for the next two years, just like we always
do!
S: The last time I was you was some months ago here in Belgium with Cannibal Corpse!
How did this tour go finally?
Trevor: That was killer, man! I mean we've been on tour with Cannibal Corpse a lot here in
the States, and as far as a young death metal band goes, there's no bigger opportunity,
'cause they are literally the biggest death metal band in the world, and so having them
taking you out on tour, and getting their seal of approval has just been humongous for us,
you know! And having that in Europe is great too because there's been a lot of long hair
guys that won't give us a chance, like Killswitch Engage or something like that, who have
just never heard the band so... playing in front of Cannibal Corpse is a just a chance to
get new fans. Same thing with Devildriver, they're a big band, so for us to steal their fans is
just a great opportunity. It was a successful tour, and we feel like we did very well.
“ We just know what we have to do, we are not so influenced by the outside,
we've established our sound, now it's just like taking it to the next level, the
challenge is pretty just pushing it. “ (Trevor Strnad)
S: Well thanks a lot for this interview, Trevor! It's always a pleasure to speak with you about
The Black Dahlia Murder! Do you have a last word for your fans and our readers here in
Belgium and everywhere else?
Trevor: Yeah man, just stay cool, check out the new record, we will be out there as soon as
possible! And if you see Jan from Leng Tch'e, give him a titty twister!!!
