The aim of the HFSP is to support basic research focused on complex mechanisms of living
organisms; fields supported range from molecular and cellular approaches to biological
functions to systems and cognitive neuroscience.
Research Grants are now designed to bring together scientists from fields such as physics,
mathematics, chemistry, computer science, bioinformatics, nanoscience, engineering and
biology to open up new approaches to understanding complex biological systems. Fellowship
Programs are aimed specifically to support young scientists who wish to change their field of
research either within the life sciences or across major disciplines
LongLong-Term Fellowships provide young scientists with up to three years of postdoctoral
research training in an outstanding laboratory in another country. The third year of the LongTerm Fellowship can be used either for repatriation to the Fellow's country or in the host
laboratory. To be eligible, a fellow must either come from or go to a member country. LongTerm Fellows who return to their home country at the end of the fellowship may apply for the
competitive Career Development Award.

CrossCross-Disciplinary Fellowships:
Fellowships Cross-Disciplinary fellowships are intended for postdoctoral
fellows with a Ph.D. degree in the physical sciences, chemistry, mathematics, engineering
and computer sciences who wish to receive training in biology. The conditions are the same
as for the Long-Term Fellowships.

covered by the training institute during this period. The scholarship therefore only includes
the costs of travel, accommodation and a supplementary allowance.
Applicants must pursue an experimental project in basic biomedical research and belong to
one of the following groups of junior scientists: PhD students or medical students pursuing
an experimental doctoral thesis who are not older than 30 years of age; postdocs who are
pursuing a particular research project who are not older than 32 years of age; graduates from

Senior Fellowships are designed to support excellent scholars, who are well advanced in their
academic careers.
General Criteria of Evaluation for Senior Fellowships: A thematic link to the IFK's current
research focus "Cultures of Evidence. Reality in the Cultural Sciences" is desired but not a
prerequisite for application. The IFK will also accept "independent" projects within the realm
of culture studies and humanities unrelated to the present research foci.
The IFK discourages proposals that are either exclusively theoretical or exclusively empirical
in character. It supports projects that combine empirical investigation with thoughtful
theoretical work.

The DBU awards scholarships to support young scientists. Entitled to apply are highly
qualified young scientists who work on research subjects with a clear relation to current
environmental issues and contribute to solving these issues through their work.
Subjects with international significance are encouraged. Most of the work has to however be
conducted in Germany. An obvious relation to the environmental situation in Germany also
has to exist. In addition to an above-average degree, the subject selected for the thesis
should be very topical and suitable for contributing to the resolution of environmental
protection and nature conservation issues.
Applicants should generally be no older than 28.
In general, all environmental research topics compliant with the criteria specified above are
acceptable, i.e. applications from the fields of Social Sciences, the Humanities, Economics
and Law in addition to the Natural and Engineering Sciences. Interdisciplinary topics in
support of a sustainable development are particularly welcome.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) promotes research in
all fields of science and the humanities. Its focus is on scientific excellence, sponsoring new
generations of scientists, interdisciplinarity and internationality. The Emmy Noether
Programme aims to offer young scientists the opportunity of achieving the requirements for
an appointment as a university teacher over a contiguous period of usually five years. This
qualification is to be gained specifically by managing a group of young scientists in sole
responsibility, in connection with an appropriate extent of qualification-specific teaching
responsibilities. Every year, approximately 39 scientists of all disciplines are sponsored in
this way – including scientists from outside Germany. The only important point is that the
applicant intends to embark on a scientific career in Germany after the end of the
scholarship.

The programme is aimed at young researchers who early on in their career – not more than
seven years after completing their PhD – wish to build up international cooperation with
foreign colleagues in a similar position. The intention with this programme is to help to create
more attractive Swedish research environments and allow for younger researchers to develop
lasting international networks.
The basis of collaborations under this programme is a joint research project. The form of the
collaboration should be exchange visits - longer or shorter stays at the partners institutions.
Projects must be institutionally based and include persons on different levels, for example
PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and university teachers.
It is important that this exchange is not limited to a few individuals or to particular categories
of researchers or academic staff.
Although the emphasis is on research cooperation it is encouraged that the researchers
engaged in the exchange teach as well. Seminars and workshops, joint courses, summer
schools and similar activities may be arranged as part of the project. The project leader and
his or her counterpart at the foreign institution will have generous scope when deciding on
the appropriate forms for their collaboration.
The main applicant must be a researcher who is currently active at a Swedish university or
institution of higher education and who has completed their PhD not more than seven years
before the closing date for applications.
Applicants are eligible for collaboration with researchers in any country and any area of
research. Each application may cover one Swedish and one or two foreign partners, one of
which must be the Main foreign partner.

Scholarships are awarded to academically excellent students with the best proven and future
potential.
Clarendon Scholarships are highly competitive, with less than 10% of applicants selected for the
scholarship. Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living
expenses, and are open to students starting a new course at Oxford.
In 2009-10, there are 298 Clarendon scholars at Oxford from 35 different nations.
Whilst there are no quotas by course type, the majority of Clarendon scholars are working towards a
DPhil (PhD).
A distinguishing feature of Clarendon scholarships is that scholars are selected from the leaders in
their field - that is, academic departments nominate whom they believe are the most deserving of
their place at the University of Oxford based on their academic record and ability to contribute
significantly to their field of study, both in the present and future. This feature ensures the best and
brightest minds are selected as Clarendon scholars.
