Heritage Elementary School
will soon have a new, improved
playground and enjoy new
sports equipment in their
gymnasium thanks to a
generous donation made by
MNA Stéphane Billette.

Specifically, the sum of $20 950
presented to school principal, Anick
Leclerc, by Billette will be invested in
infrastructure in the playground and
gymnasium. The investment is being
made to encourage and support the
adoption of healthy and active lifestyles among students.
“We’re going to improve the facilities in the gym: volleyball courts, badminton courts that we don’t have right
now,” says Leclerc. Physical Education
teacher, Harry Antoine, in thrilled with
the news since it means he will no longer have to come up with innovative
ways to hang badminton and volleyball
nets without having the proper installations and materials. Leclerc continues by saying that their playground
will also be undergoing a major makeover to which new sports zones for soccer, basketball and games on the blacktop will be added. She also talks about
installing picnic tables with permanent
board games on them for students to
benefit from.

The gymnasium of Heritage Elementary school erupted in cheering as Stéphane
Billette presented the $20 950 cheque to principal Anick Leclerc. After the assembly
finished, students trickled back to class, but not before high-fiving Billette on their
way out. Principal, Leclerc used Billette's perseverence through the bike ride to motivate students. It apparently worked, because as they high-fived him, many of them

his first year of participating, Billette
managed to raise $10,000 for Howick
School.
“The choice of which school was a bit
random, even though I was well aware
of the needs of Heritage Elementary.
The Town of Huntingdon hasn’t had
it easy in recent years and I wanted to
give back to this community,” he says.
By way of the donation, Stéphane
Billette hopes to raise awareness about
the importance of being physically
active and healthy eating. He hopes
to show students the importance of
staying in shape.
“A person who adopts good eating
habits and stays physically active
will cost the State less in healthcare
expenses later on in life. We must educate youth about this, just as we were
taught about the importance of recycling in our youth,” he explains.
The amount remitted by the constituency for Huntingdon in the National
Assembly is the result of Billette’s
participation in the Grand Défi Pierre
Lavoie. The sports initiative was held
from June 13 to 15.
“This was the second time I participated in the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie,
and this year’s edition was the most
difficult, because of the weather. Along

the man was intercepted by police on

minutes after leaving a licensed establishment. Furthermore, he almost hit
the police car which had ordered him to
stop soon after leaving the parking lot.
Once he was stopped, police found
the suspect showed obvious signs of
impaired driving. Therefore, he was
transported to the Dundee border crossing where he was administered a breathalizer which revealed a blood alcohol
level surpassing the legal limit.
He was arrested and released by
subpoena and will return to court in
March.

Road sign damaged
in Godmanchester
A car driven by a 23 year old woman
from Huntingdon skidded and hit a road
sign on Route 202. The driver was unable
to negotiate the curve and her car ended
up in the ditch after it collided with the
sign. She was transported to the hospital in Valleyfield with minor injuries.
Damage to her car was only minimal.

A truck with a bucket lift, owned
by Bell Canada, caught fire on
Wednesday, January 21 in the morning. While at the intersection of
Chemin du Bord de l’eau et de la
Montée du Lac in Sainte-Barbe, the
plastic bucket-lift caught fire. The
fire department was called and extinguished the fire which was caused by
a part of the heater inside the lift. Bell
Canada estimates that the damage
amounts to about $2,000. The worker
was not injured.

Bell Let’s Talk Day : January 28
Author Lemony Snicket wrote: “Just
because you don’t understand it, doesn’t
mean it isn’t so.” This seems to be the
root of the stigma surrounding mental
illness. People do not understand it and
as such are able to jump to false conclusions that shame people into being
embarrassed to admit they are suffering
and as such thwart their efforts at a successful recovery immensely.
January 28 is Bell Let’s Talk Day; an
occasion aimed at ending the stigma
associated with mental illness. It is
a campaign that invites everyone to
engage in the conversation about mental
health and put an end to the stigma. In
their press release about the campaign,
it is stated that: “While 1 in 5 Canadians
will experience mental illness at some
point in their lives, the lingering stigma
means 2 in 3 will struggle in silence fearing judgement and rejection.” With statistics like that, it’s is without question
an issue that affects all of us whether it
be suffering from it directly, or through
being acquainted with someone who is
struggling with it.
This year the focus of the Bell Let’s
Talk Campaign is five simple ways
to help end the stigma that we can
all embrace to be a part of ending the
stigma. The five ways are listed below:
1-Language Matters—pay attention to
the words you use about mental illness
2-Educate yourself—learn, know, and
talk more, understand the signs
3-Be kind—small acts of kindness
speak a lot
4-Listen and ask—sometimes it’s best
to just listen
5-Talk about it—start a dialogue,
break the silence
What will embracing these five simple
things do? What impact will they have?:
“Ending the stigma of mental illness
depends on building greater awareness, acceptance and action. These are 5
simple ways all Canadians can help build
a culture in which people struggling with
mental illness feel supported and not

Reflecting on the gravity of the generosity, she says: “I think if you look
around you, every family has somebody
that has been touched by cancer and I
think that’s why [support for the foundation] just keeps growing and growing
and growing.” She goes on to say “I
don’t think there’s one week that goes
by that I don’t have someone knocking
on the door to donate in memory of
somebody who has passed away.” That
way, “the ones up there [in heaven] are
helping the ones down here.”
As for those who have successfully
completed their treatments, Riel has
found that they often return to thank
the foundation for the help it provided
them. Frequently, when it is financially
viable for them, they will donate money
to the foundation as a way of saying
thank you and contributing to the fund
so that it continues to grow.
As the number of donations have
grown, so too have the ways in which
people are donating. She has had
people who have hosted birthday parties and anniversary parties and instead of accepting gifts, they will take up
a collection of money that guests would
have spent on gifts and will donate it to
the Betty Riel Foundation. Jean-Paul
Quesnel did this at his 65th birthday
party and raised a substantial amount,
as did David and Jean Rankin at the
celebrations for their 50th wedding
anniversary. More recently, the girls
from the TOPS weight loss program
did the same at Christmastime instead of doing their usual gift exchange.
“Instead of getting stuff for themselves,
they are giving to help other people in
our community and that is amazing!”
says Riel.
Back in the fall there was the
Spaghetti Day at the Citron & Basilic,

Firemen donated the profits of their
annual spaghetti supper to the foundation. They also participated in
the Christmas Sale where they had a
table of handmade items that people
had donated to be raffled off and sold.
The Bank of Montreal also donated
a special set of tickets to a Christmas
Concert in Montreal to be raffled off.
The different ways that people come
up with to support the Foundation are
extensive. Riel says she has already
had people telling her about fundraisers they are planning for 2015 and she
is looking forward to their support. The
Foundation is also eagerly anticipating
their annual hot dog sale at Super C
in Ormstown as well as their annual
Walk-a-thon.
There are also the people who either
call or show up at Betty’s home, the
official address of the Foundation and
donate money that way. One such call
was from Stéphane Billette, MNA who
presented a generous donation to the
Foundation after witnessing the important role it plays in the community. He
is one among many who have stopped in to donate. Riel recalls when her
brother from Massachusetts came to
stay with her for a few days recently,
he couldn’t get over the amount of
people calling and stopping by: “He was
floored. He said he had never seen such
caring generosity as in this small community,” Betty recalls.
It’s not even always the amount that
leaves Riel at a loss for words, sometimes it’s the stories that go along with
them. She recalls one donation of $5
that a woman donated after winning
it on a lottery ticket that a young boy
presented her with in the street. A

Readers” section). Riel says “I still get
goosebumps even thinking about it.”

The foundation is currently up to

patient, per year, with drivers from
their collaborators at SABEC (service
d’accompagnement bénévole et communautaire), but because of the outpouring of support that culminated
in a wealth of generosity flowing in

can see that number being increased
within the near future. Considering
the money brought in during the
holidays alone, she confidently estimates that it will allow the foundation
to pay for at least 100 trips for cancer
patients. Furthermore, she speculates:
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could
[eventually] pay for all of their trips to
go in?”

group to experience CVR’s Performing
Arts Program with their production of

Patriots prevail to win first place
The Atom B Patriots of Beauharnois were crowned champions of the Pierre-Laniel
provincial tournament.The Atom B Patriots of Beauharnois defeated the formidable
dragons of St. Rémi on the afternoon of January 11 with a score of 3 to 2 in a shootout. It was a thrilling match and player fought through to the end to finish the game
coming from behind with a goal by Lucas Roy and the winning goal made by Alexi
Watt to bring the team to victory.
Noteworthy contributions include a goal by Benjamin Paiement in the 1st period
and the extraordinary defense. The goalie David Gagnon was spectacular and was

On December the 18th I was lucky
enough to be shown the true meaning
of Christmas. I was on my way to meet
friends for supper. There were two
little boys with their Mom and Dad. The
oldest boy showed me a $1.00 scratch
ticket. I asked him if he was going to
scratch it and win some money to buy
Christmas presents. He said it was for
me and then he wished me a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. To
the parents, I would like to say “Thank
you” for teaching their sons about
giving at this time of year and not just
to receive. I told my friends about this
wonderful gift so I was able to share
this (wonderful) gift. I did not know the
family. We don’t need to know someone
to be able to share this gift. If the young
boy reads this, I would like to tell him
I won five dollars, but that ticket was
worth more to me. I took the five dollars and gave it to the Betty Riel fund for
rides for cancer treatments so this way
your gift will make someone else happy.

Though the past week has been filled
with preparation for midterm exams, the
athletes at CVR have continued to work
hard and practice. Practices have been
continuing regardless of the lack of late
buses. The dedication of these athletes
never falters.
The juvenile girl’s basketball team
won against LPP on January 14th. The
score was 47-19 and the MVPs were
Olyvia Faille and Bailey O’Farrell. On the
17th of January they hosted an SSIAA
tournament. They lost their first game
and won the second game. The games
were against Heritage and Chambly. The
midget girls played in the same tournament. They also played two games,
in which they won the first and lost the
second. The two juvenile boy’s teams
played in a tournament on the south
shore on the 17th. More results are to
come for this tournament. Both bantam teams have their next games on the
23rd of January. The senior boy’s hockey team played in a tournament last
Thursday. They worked very hard and
won one game and lost the second. The
volleyball teams still have not played
any games, however, the bantam team
will be playing next Friday and the midget and juvenile teams will be playing on
Saturday. All of these games will be happening at Heritage. Good luck everyone!

« C’était la deuxième fois que j’y participais
et ça été plus difficile cette année en raison
des conditions météorologiques. Tout au long
de 500 kilomètres que j’ai pédalés, je persévérais en pensant aux jeunes de la région qui
allaient bénéficier de cet argent », racontet-il.
Le coup d’envoi de l’événement a été
donné à La Baie au Saguenay et s’est terminé
à Montréal. L’an passé, dans le cadre de sa

Le 16 janvier tôt en matinée, une
voiture conduite par une dame de 39
ans de Saint-Chrysostome s’est retrouvée dans le fossé sur la route 209. Les

ce moment-là ont rendu la chaussée

du Québec (SQ) du Haut-SaintLaurent ont trouvé un sachet
contenant une poudre blanche

nacelle, a vu celle-ci prendre feu, le
mercredi 21 janvier au matin. Alors

Chemin du Bord de l’eau et de la
Montée du Lac à Sainte-Barbe, la
nacelle de plastique s’est embrasée.
L’incendie, qui a nécessité l’intervention des sapeurs de la municipalité, a
possiblement été causé par une chaufferette située à l’intérieur de la nacelle.
Selon Bell Canada, les dommages
s’élèvent à 2 000 $. Le travailleur n’a

Cette semaine, c’est une belle
nouvelle qui a retenu mon attention. Une école privée de Montréal,
répondant
au
nom
d’Alex
Mannogian, accueille des enfants
réfugiés de leur pays en guerre et
récemment débarqués à Montréal
avec leur famille.
L’établissement scolaire, situé
dans l’arrondissement SaintLaurent est entièrement financé
par la communauté arménienne
de Montréal. Là-bas, les jeunes
peuvent apprendre en toute quiétude sans avoir peur des chars d’assaut ou des tirs de soldats.
Parce que si pour la majorité
d’entre nous ces éléments nous sont
inconnus, pour ses enfants et leurs
familles, ils sont bien réels. Jusqu’à
tout récemment, ils faisaient même
partie de leur quotidien.
En entrevue avec un média national, la jeune Galine, 13 ans, confiait
que sa maison en Syrie tremblait à
cause des chars d’assaut. Elle devait
se boucher les oreilles fréquemment
et ne pouvait pas marcher dans la
rue en raison du danger. Son école a
même déjà été touchée par les balles.
De son côté, Daron 12 ans, avouait
avoir vu beaucoup de gens mourir
sous les coups de fusil. Sa famille a
quitté la Syrie il y a trois mois parce
qu’il y avait trop de morts autour
d’eux. Elle est arrivée à Montréal un

À l’école, ils parlent arménien et ils apprennent le français.
Personnellement, je trouve que cette
initiative est une belle façon de leur
donner une seconde chance dans
la vie. Je me mets à leur place et je
n’aurai sans doute pas été journaliste si j’avais passé mon enfance
dans leur quartier où la mort est
omniprésente.
Ici, au Québec, Aline 8 ans, soulignait qu’elle peut dormir la nuit sans
craindre quoi que ce soit. Elle ajoutait qu’elle préfère l’école au Québec
et ne pas vouloir retourner dans la
guerre, d’autant plus qu’elle a maintenant pleins de nouveaux amis.
Ces jeunes réfugiés sont recommandés à l’école par un organisme
communautaire arménien. L’école
existe depuis quatre ans et elle
accueille ces jeunes étudiants traumatisés par la guerre. Bientôt, une
seconde classe ouvrira ses portes
pour recevoir les enfants de la cinquantaine de familles syriennes arrivées pendant les Fêtes.
Qu’on soit pour ou contre l’immigration, on ne peut que dire BRAVO
à cette école et à son personnel
pour son implication auprès de ses
enfants. Grâce à elle et aux enseignants qui y travaillent, les élèves
pourront se bâtir une vie paisible
dans l’harmonie.

s’est produite à 11 h 35 et son épicentre est situé à 14 kilomètres
au sud-ouest de Salaberry-deValleyfield, soit approximativement
au même endroit que celui perçu

trice à l’ACEF du Haut-Saint-Laurent.
L’idée des capsules télévisuelles
découle d’un atelier éducatif sur la
Loi de la protection du consommateur. Près de 175 personnes ont été
rejointes et le constat s’est avéré surprenant. «Les gens ne connaissent pas
la Loi. Il y a plusieurs années, il y avait
des cours au niveau secondaire qui
abordaient les questions budgétaires,
mais ils ont été abolis. Également,
dans la région comme ici, on est bien
en deçà de la moyenne de scolarisation au Québec. Il faut suivre de près
ces questions et avoir accès à l’information dans un langage accessible»,
a-t-elle expliqué.
À cet effet, Éloi Bureau, coordonnateur de la Coalition des associations
de consommateurs du Québec indique
que les capsules s’inscrivent dans leur
mission. Les émissions seront donc
diffusées à l’intérieur des 21 associations du Québec.

prendre soin de tousser ou d’éternuer dans le pli du coude», indique

«Les municipalités sont prises continuellement à demander des comptes
aux divers ministères pour faire approuver leurs décisions et cela freine considérablement leurs efforts de développement», dit-elle.

La présidente de l’UMQ s’est par ailleurs montrée cinglante à l’égard du

municipalités, ce qui pourrait représenter des hausses de taxes de 14 % pour les
citoyens.
«On revient toujours à la même recette
de refiler la facture aux municipalités

déficit. Il s’agit d’un rapport simpliste, qui
manque de rigueur et qui fait fi de la réalité municipale», a commenté Suzanne
Roy.

d’action et souhaite entreprendre dès le
mois de mai prochain les négociations
avec Québec en vue du prochain pacte
