This was a fabulous restaurant, a real Swiss bistro, with abundant portions, an absolutely outrageous fine wine list,
with terrific California selections and heavy on Rhône wines. The food was sensational, with one of the best Quiche
Lorraine’s I have ever eaten. In addition, they served possibly the finest Veal Cordon Bleu I have ever had – perfectly
cooked veal stuffed with high-quality ham and several Swiss cheeses. It was sumptuous, rib-sticking and incredibly satisfying.
The wines all hit the high points of the night, probably aided by the great ambience, cuisine and just a fun time.
The 2011 F.X. Pichler Rielsing Unendlich (we drank down two bottles) was absolutely outrageously rich and
honeyed with loads of caramelized citrus, a touch of tropical fruit, but great minerality and precision. This guy’s
wines are also known for their unreal purity of character, and both bottles had that in spades.
We then moved to two of my favorite Châteauneuf du Papes of all time. An old-vine, 100% Grenache cuvée grown
in pure sandy soils near Château Rayas, the 2010 Domaine Giraud Les Grenaches de Pierre was dense purple, still
youthful and young, but showed unbelievable levels of black cherry fruit, black raspberry, earth and spice. It is
full-bodied, extravagantly rich and a total hedonistic, intellectual turn-on. It should continue to drink well for at
least another 10-15 years, if you can somehow manage to keep your hands off of it. That was followed by a
magnum of 2007 Domaine de Pégaü Cuvée da Capo, which was out of this world, in a more traditional style, with
loads of garrigue, licorice, roasted meats, beef blood and plenty of kirsch liqueur. This was killer Châteauneuf du
Pape as well.
All things considered, this was a great night, with some of my best friends, including an old buddy from Lucerne
who has a great wine shop there, Carl Studer; my business manager, Joe James; our young turk who checks out
wine-tasting and eating venues for us, Oliver Mumenthaler, and we were occasionally joined by the beautiful
waitress at this tiny bistro as well as the exuberant proprietor. This is my kind of place, and I highly recommend it
if you are ever in Zurich.

les Gallimardes Blanc
A step up on the richness scale from the les
Premices, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape
Tradition (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah) has
impressive amounts of black cherry and
strawberry fruit, white pepper, incense and
violets. This medium-bodied, ultra-pure, elegant,
yet mid-weight Châteauneuf du Pape has lots to
love, but will need drinking in its first 5-7 years of
life.
I've always loved the white from Marie Giraud,
and her 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape les
Gallimardes Blanc offers classic notes of pear,
white peach, citrus rind and salty minerality on
the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh and crisp, yet
still with solid texture, it is high class stuff and will
have at least 2-4 years of prime drinking.

2014 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape
les Grenaches de Pierre
The lighter ruby colored 2014 Châteauneuf du
Pape Tradition is a pretty, perfumed and forward
wine that makes the most of the vintage. Offering
up lots of raspberry, black raspberry, strawberry
and hints of garrigue, it's all about pretty, supple,
sexy fruit. Drink this medium-bodied beauty in its
first 5-6 years of life.
The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape les Grenaches
de Pierre has a medium to full-bodied, silky and
seamless feel to go with lots of floral and
raspberry characteristics on the nose. One of the
more forward and pretty examples of this cuvée,
it has terrific purity and sweetness of tannin, and
should drink nicely on release and over the
following 8-10 years.

2014 Domaine Giraud Cotes du Rhone
Coming all from Lirac, the 2014 Côtes du Rhône
is 100% Grenache and offers beautiful, classic
notes of wild strawberries, framboise and
crushed flowers in a medium-bodied, forward,
perfumed, charming style. About as quaffable as
they come, it won't make old bones but will put a
smile on anyone's face over the coming 3-4
years.

2013 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee les Grenache de Pierre
As in 2014, the only special cuvée is the 2013
Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée les Grenaches de
Pierre. While slightly less impressive than I had
hoped, it's still a beautiful wine that offers
perfumed and complex aromatics of raspberries,
dried flowers, vanilla, wild strawberries and rose
petal. Medium ruby colored, medium-bodied,
finesse-driven and exceedingly elegant, it has
moderate concentration yet high quality tannin
and a great finish. It will have 10-12 years of
longevity.

les Premices
Pinot Noir-like in its raspberry, spice and forest
floor-driven bouquet, the light ruby colored 2013
Châteauneuf du Pape les Premices is
medium-bodied, lightly textured and elegant, with
not much depth or concentration. It's a charming,
mid-weight effort that will need drinking in its
youth.
