Woody Guthrie est un artiste fondateur de
l’histoire des musiques du 20ème siècle,
créateur du folksong moderne, voix des sans
voix, héraut de l'Amérique du travail, celle
des Raisins de la colère et des Dust Bowls. Il
aura profondément inspiré Bob Dylan, Bruce
Springsteen et toute une génération
d’artistes.

Journaliste et écrivain, spécialiste de la chanson française et de la chanson américaine, Jacques Vassal a
travaillé à Rock & Folk et à Paroles et Musique, et collabore à Politis. Traducteur de Woody Guthrie en
France « En route pour la gloire » (Albin Michel/Rock & Folk, 2012) et « Cette machine tue les fascistes
(Albin Michel/Rock & Folk, 1978), il est notamment l’auteur de "Dylan" (Albin Michel, 1978), "Léonard

C’est la chanson la plus célèbre de Woody Guthrie. Elle fut écrite en 1940 en réaction à « God bless
America », (chanson patriotique de la première guerre mondiale réinterprétée avec succès en 1938
par Kate Smith) et enregistrée en 1944, sur une mélodie inspirée du gospel « Oh my loving
brother » chanté par la Carter Family sous le titre « When the world’s on fire ».

l’interprète à la cérémonie d’investiture du président Barack Obama avec Pete Seeger, autre père

l’album “This land is not your land”. C’est un double hommage à Woody Guthrie et au chanteur
Phil Ochs mais aussi une critique de l’Amérique des Tea Party, de la droite dure et des Evangélistes.

Woody Guthrie écrit The Ballad of Tom Joad en 1940, après avoir vu le film de John Ford « Les
raisins de la colère » d’après le roman de John Steinbeck (1939). Bruce Springsteen compose et
écrit « The ghost of Tom Joad » en 1995 et conte à la manière folk d’un Woody Guthrie ou d’un Bob
Dylan douze chroniques sur les oubliés de L’Amérique.

style du chanteur quand il le joue à New York en 1961, année où il écrit « Song to Woody ». Ecrite
