Prince Charles has no place at Commonwealth Conference
Nov. 22, 2007 - Sydney, London, Toronto, Wellington - On the eve of the latest Commonwealth conference,
Common Cause - an alliance of Commonwealth republican movements - has rejected the notion that Charles
should automatically succeed the Queen as lifetime head of the organization.
In a joint statement from republican groups in Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand, the movements have
called for an end to the monarchy's favoured position within the Commonwealth.
As the Queen grows older, Charles is taking on more of her official duties. His attendance at this weekend's
CHOGM Commonwealth conference in Uganda is clearly an attempt to promote the possibility of him becoming the
next Head of the Commonwealth.
It has always been known that when the Queen dies, Charles will not automatically become Head of the
Commonwealth; that instead, it will be up to the member countries' heads of government to decide what will
happen to this symbolic position. Given that polls throughout the Commonwealth consistently show support for
ending the monarchy climbs when Charles succeeding the Queen as monarch is considered, the Windsor family
must stop making the assumption that they will continue to have a role in the Commonwealth.
As a unique community of nations, the Commonwealth is committed to democracy, liberty and equal rights for all.
These principles, not hereditary privilege, are important to the Commonwealth's future.

Le Prince Charles n'a pas sa place à la conférence du
Commonwealth
Le 22 novembre 2007 - Sydney, Londres, Toronto, Wellington - À la veille de la plus récente conférence du
Commonwealth, Common Cause, une alliance de mouvements républicains du Commonwealth, rejette la
succession automatique de la Reine par Charles en tant que chef à vie de l'organisation .
Dans une déclaration conjointe des groupes républicains de l'Australie, de la Grande-Bretagne, du Canada et de la
Nouvelle-Zélande, les mouvements réclament la fin du privilège accordé à la monarchie au sein du
Commonwealth.
À mesure que la reine vieillit, Charles assume de plus en plus de ses fonctions officielles. Sa participation cette fin
de semaine à la conférence des chefs de gouvernement du Commonwealth en Ouganda signale une tentative
visant à promouvoir la possibilité qu'il devienne le prochain chef du Commonwealth.
Il est généralement reconnu que lorsque la reine mourrera, Charles ne deviendra pas automatiquement chef du
Commonwealth. Il appartiendra aux chefs de gouvernement du Commonwealth de décider ce qui adviendra de ce
poste symbolique. Selon tous les sondages parmi les pays du Commonwealth, la possibilité que Charles succède
à la Reine diminue la popularité de la monarchie. La famille Windsor doit donc cesser de s'attendre à jouer un rôle
au sein du Commonwealth.
