Die Hauptstadt des Irak ist zu dieser Zeit noch ein beliebter Tummelplatz für die Reichen und Schönen im Nahen Osten – und auch für zwielichtige Geschäftemacher. Denn kaufen kann man hier alles. Aber alles hier hat auch seinen Preis: Im Irak gedeihen Korruption und Betrug. Einer, der dies wie kein anderer für seine Zwecke zu nutzen weiß, ist Udai Hussein, der älteste Sohn des irakischen Diktators Saddam Hussein. Wonach ihm der Sinn steht, das nimmt er sich, sei es dein Haus, dein Ferrari, deine Frau, deine Tochter. Niemand im Irak wagt es, nein zu Udai Hussein zu sagen. Natürlich macht sich so einer Feinde, auch solche, die ihm nach dem Leben trachten. Um dieses Risiko zu minimieren, legt er sich ein Double zu. Seine Wahl trifft auf Latif Yahia, einen ehemaligen Schulkameraden. Er dient als Offizier in der irakischen Armee und lehnt das Ansinnen Udais zunächst ab. Doch der hat keine Skrupel, Latif zu zwingen. Nach einer wochenlangen Schulung, zu der auch die Übernahme eines Sprachfehlers gehört, beginnt Latif den Alltag des „schwarzen Prinzen“ zu teilen. So lernt er das Leben des gefürchtetsten Mannes in seinem Land kennen. Mitsamt aller Extravaganzen: den schnellen Autos, den schier unerschöpflichen finanziellen Mitteln, den schönen Frauen und leichten Mädchen. Und mit seinen Verbrechen. Doch sich aus dem Bannkreis des Bösen zu lösen, gelingt Latif nicht. Erst während des Irakkriegs 1991 lässt Udai Hussein ihn fallen. A time when Iraq’s capital was a favourite stomping ground for the rich and beautiful people of the Middle East – as well as dubious businessmen. This is a place where you can buy anything you want. It’s also a place where everything has its price. Iraq is a breeding ground for corruption and fraud. Someone who knows better than anyone how to make use of such things is Uday Hussein, the oldest son of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Uday is in the habit of taking anything that might appeal to him – be it your house, your Ferrari, your wife or your daughter. Naturally, his behaviour earns him plenty of enemies – including those who’d like to do away with him for good. In order to reduce this risk, he decides to use a double. He chooses Latif Yahia, a former schoolmate. An officer in the Iraqi army, Yahia initially turns down Uday’s request – but the dictator’s son has no qualms about forcing Latif to do his bidding. After weeks of training that includes having to practise a speech impediment, Latif begins to share the ‘black prince’s’ life. Before long he becomes acquainted with the lifestyle of the most feared man in the land – a constant round of extravagance, fast cars, inexhaustible financial resources, beautiful women and loose girls. He also becomes acquainted with his crimes. Try as he might, Latif finds it impossible to extricate himself from this evil spell. Biography Born in Wellington, New Zealand, on 17.6.1950, he made his debut as a director in 1994 with the phenomenally successful Maori drama ONCE WERE WARRIORS. Since then, he has directed a number of star-studded Hollywood thrillers including MULHOLLAND FALLS (with Nick Nolte and John Malkovich) and THE EDGE (with Anthony Hopkins). La capitale de l’Irak est encore à cette époque un lieu de prédilection pour les nantis du Proche Orient ainsi que pour de louches affairistes. Ici, en effet, on peut tout acheter – mais chaque chose a aussi son prix : en Irak, la corruption et l’escroquerie sont florissantes. Oudaï Hussein, fils aîné du dictateur irakien Saddam Hussein, sait en tirer parti pour son propre compte. Il s’approprie tout ce que bon lui semble, que ce soit ta maison, ta Ferrari, ta femme ou ta fille. Personne en Irak n’ose dire « non » à Oudaï Hussein. Un tel individu se fait forcément des ennemis dont certains veulent même sa peau. Afin de minimiser les risques, il se procure un double. Son choix se porte sur Latif Yahia, un ancien camarade de classe. Il sert comme officier dans l’armée irakienne et écarte d’abord la requête d’Oudaï. Celui-ci n’a toutefois pas le moindre scrupule et contraint Latif à se plier à sa volonté. Après une formation qui dure des semaines, l’apprentissage d’un défaut de prononciation en faisant partie, Latif commence à partager le quotidien du « prince noir ». C’est ainsi qu’il découvre la vie de l’homme le plus redouté de son pays – y compris toutes ses extravagances : voitures ultra rapides, moyens financiers inépuisables, belles femmes et filles faciles. Et ses crimes. Latif ne parvient toutefois pas à quitter l’orbite du mal. Ce n’est que pendant la guerre du Golfe, en 1991, que Oudaï Hussein le laisse tomber.
