It has been said that the journey is just as important as the
destination. As an airline devoted to the quality of travel, Porter
wholeheartedly agrees. I am, however, always delighted by
how refreshing and eye-opening a new destination can be,
be it a city you’re visiting for an overnight business trip or
one in which you’re planning a lengthy stay. From unfamiliar
weather to new street signage, a distinctive accent or a twist
on serving coffee – or from Ottawa’s approach to newspaper
design to New York’s colourful street art, Thunder Bay’s
surrounding wilderness or Chicago’s taxi drivers who offer
flamboyant greetings – each new place can inspire different
perspectives. And we, at Porter, wouldn’t want it any other way.

With the arrival of a new arena
for the Ottawa Redblacks, change
is afoot in the central Ottawa
neighbourhood of the Glebe.

The first thing the uninitiated may notice about the Glebe, even
before setting foot there, is its wonderful name. The Glebe. It
rolls off the tongue with the weirdness of a 90s one-hit wonder.
But unlike this undeserving parallel, when it comes to quirky
independent businesses, the hits are one after another. Today,
there is big change on the horizon for this slice of the city. This
past summer marked the opening of TD Place, a new home
for the Ottawa Redblacks football team. For an area that is just
removed enough from downtown to feel quiet and distinct,
a stadium is an unlikely addition, and one that has been met
with mixed reviews. On the one hand, it will bring the masses
to local businesses. On the other, the area is now faced with
the development of big box businesses, casting a shadow
of uncertainty over what has long been home to the city’s
funkier types. At press time, the dust had barely settled on the
stadium and all that comes with it, so we take stock of the old
and the new on Bank Street. La première chose que le visiteur
remarque est son nom merveilleux : The Glebe. Il est facile à
prononcer et évoque le titre d’un hit des années 90. Mais à
l’inverse de ce parallèle étrange, en matière de boutiques
indépendantes et originales, les numéros 1 ne manquent pas.
Aujourd’hui, cette portion de la ville voit se profiler un gros
changement à l’horizon. L’été dernier a vu l’inauguration du TD
Place, le nouveau stade de l’équipe de football des Redblacks
d’Ottawa. Pour un voisinage juste assez loin du centre pour
être calme et différent, l’ajout d’un stade est inattendu et
l’accueil a été mitigé. D’un côté, cela amènera des clients aux
magasins de l’endroit, d’un autre, cela favorisera l’implantation
de grandes marques qui pourraient menacer l’identité d’un
quartier parmi les plus funky de la ville. Une bonne excuse pour
se pencher sur l’ancien et le nouveau de Bank Street.

When the seniors behind Ada’s, a
much-loved greasy spoon, hung
up their aprons, a group of Ottawa
restaurateurs decided to keep the
name alive. Wilf & Ada’s pays homage
to its previous tenants, but the new
incarnation exists as a diner in name
alone. The proudly self-described
“scratch diner” makes everything
in-house, from the peanut butter to
the cured bacon, with all else coming
from local farms and suppliers. Quand
les anciens qui géraient l’Ada’s ont pris
leur retraite, un groupe de restaurateurs
d’Ottawa ont voulu perpétuer ce bistro
populaire. Wilf & Ada’s rend hommage à

What this spot may lack in polish it
certainly makes up for in neighbourhood
gravitas. Irene’s is a pub for trueblue locals, be it the indie kids taking
advantage of the robust live music
calendar or the late afternoon crowd
who have been tending to this watering
hole for decades. The beers, mostly
local, flow freely, the interiors are unfussy
and the staff is suitably tattooed. Ce
que l’endroit manque en raffinement,
il le compense par le fait qu’il est une
véritable institution du voisinage. Irene’s
est en effet un pub pour habitués,
qu’il s’agisse de jeunes qui viennent

When the owners signed for this space,
they opted to keep the restaurant open
as something of a prequel to what will
open here later next year. They’re developing the concept and interior design
now, while serving their farm-to-table
fare in the space as it currently stands
(i.e., the slightly dated shell of a onceItalian restaurant). Regardless of the
iteration, this is one to look out for. Lorsque les propriétaires ont repris l’endroit,

Glebe Meat Market
This butcher shop’s charm is apparent
even before you set foot inside the
place. Outside, the white-and-red
facade and woodcut signage have
a distinct Norman Rockwell feel, a
cue that signals to Glebites the finest
butcher shop on the street. The familyrun business is known for no less, but
not least of all for its haggis, which
is renowned among Ottawa’s more
adventurous eaters. Le charme de

Kettleman’s Bagel Co.
The list of clichéd late night food among
students isn’t a long one (pizza). But
for the Glebe’s night owls, Kettleman’s
churns out the holey dough 24 hours
a day. These are perhaps some of the
city’s finest bagels, all baked in-house in
a wood-burning oven. Do try the Kettleman’s Special, a magnificent intersection of toasted sesame bagel, smoked
salmon, onions and schmear. Pour les
étudiants, le menu des soupers tardifs
est bref : pizzas. Pour les oiseaux de nuit
de Glebe, Kettleman’s fournit les bagels
quotidiens 24h/24. Ce sont sans doute

Once you’ve experienced knives – not
unlike wine, coffee and hand soap – at
their highest level of quality, it’s hard to
go back. This distinction is made especially clear at Knifewear, where the staff
encourage shoppers to test out the
handcrafted Japanese steel knives on
offer. The Japanese use a special steel
that remains sharper longer – and that
can cut through a raw potato as though

It’s a Bank Street veteran that has a
paper stock, fine pen and ribbon for

While the Glebe proper holds slim pickings for hotels and B & Bs, with its central location it’s just a hop, skip and jump
from Ottawa’s downtown core. ARC
The.Hotel is a boutique hotel that gives
a feeling of coziness notably absent at
the neighbouring mega-hotels. And it’s
the little perks that distinguish it: one
of ARC’s signature touches is a green
apple and Belgian chocolate square
awaiting each guest upon return to

Don’t be fooled: the Unrefined Olive is
actually a very refined little shop specializing in flavoured olive oils and balsamic
vinegars. An hour can easily be spent
exploring the wares, as a delightful
staff dispenses tastes in little stainless
steel vessels and sampling is encouraged. With an assortment ranging from
blood orange olive oil to dark chocolate
balsamic, the hardest part is choosing
just one. Le nom est trompeur, car cette
petite boutique est en fait très raffinée.

Glebe residents are conscious of what’s
going on, nationally and on a community
basis. I think the recent changes to
the neighbourhood are great. I know
that it could give rise to gluttonous
consumerism, but knowing the Glebe’s
residents, they wouldn’t let it happen if
it got in the way of the area’s charm. Les
résidents savent ce qui se passe dans le

Central Park
This 100-year-old, well-pruned park
marks one of the neighbourhood’s
favourite green spaces. The very narrow
Central Park snakes through four city
blocks, divided by Bank Street and
bordered by the Rideau Canal. Come in
the summer for various arts festivals or
skate on the pond in the winter months.

I moved to Ottawa from Toronto three
years ago to complete my master’s in
architecture, and I’ve lived in and around
the Glebe ever since. It feels like I’m part
of a community – everyone is so friendly
and knows each other, which you just
don’t get downtown. J’ai quitté Toronto
pour Ottawa il y a trois ans pour faire
ma maîtrise en architecte et depuis,
je vis dans le Glebe. J’ai le sentiment

I’ve lived in the Glebe twice – the first
time after moving out of my parents’
place, and now with my bandmates.
I’m glad that the new stadium will let

time in the area discover something
new. I hope the space is used to benefit
the artists and musicians in the area.

The name is pronounced “Zam,” with a little click at the
front. It’s better to try it after a glass of wine. It means
the people, or family, in the language of the San – Africa’s
first Bushmen. It’s a mark of our respect for the communities in South Africa and Botswana where we source our
diamonds. It also informs the ethical standpoint we take;
we’re certified with the Responsible Jewellery Council.
We don’t deal in conflict diamonds and we don’t get our
stones cut in places where workers can be exploited.
My brother got a 25-year grounding in the diamond
business before he started the company. He began as
a cutter, then he traded stones, then he owned a small
mining venture in South Africa. That means we’re able to
tell the story of any stone we sell, which creates a powerful
connection for purchasers. Obviously, this stone is going
to have significance for them – diamonds are bought for
weddings, anniversaries, big occasions; they’re not an
everyday purchase – so it’s carrying the story forward.
Something else that sets us apart is that our clients
have an input in the design process in our jewellery
boutique. We bring our designers and clients together,
a bit like a chef consulting with his or her diners on what
ingredients they’d like. We’ve brought in graduates from
George Brown College in Toronto to work with us on the
design side, and we’d like to make that an ongoing program if we can. We’re trying to turn away from the elitism
that a lot of high-end jewellery stores represent.
Jeffrey and I are originally from South Africa. I practiced law there, then worked in corporate finance in
New York. In 2010 Jeffrey was interested in creating a
retail concept, so he invited me to help make that happen.
We bring different skills to the table and work together
well. Our boutique/workshop is in downtown Toronto, and
we’ve also opened a boutique in Vaughan. My main travelling route is between Toronto and Newark, because I spend
the weekends at home in Connecticut with my family.
Canada is actually one of the top three diamond-producing countries, with four mines in the northwest. We
can access those stones, but we find that the cost of the
rock is at a premium, and clients are less inclined to shoulder that cost. But there’s certainly potential for the business to be totally integrated within Canada in the future.
Finely Cut
Terry Brenner, co-founder of !Xam Diamonds, is the go-to man for ethical
diamonds in Canada. Behind each stone, he believes, is a story, and his wish

brother Jeffrey in 2011. It has a mine-to-market premise,
where clients can engage in a personal journey with the
stone they purchase in our custom-design jewellery boutique, from the rock it’s hewn from to delivery. Our aim was
to introduce a higher level of transparency, quality and service to the jewellery market in Canada.

sparkle every time. Sometimes you step back from the
business side of things and think, “Wow, that’s impressive. We’ve created something amazing for the ages.” No
wonder Cleopatra and all the kings, queens, emperors,

Mon frère a travaillé dans le secteur du diamant pendant 25 ans avant que nous fondions notre société. Il
a d’abord été tailleur, puis négociant avant d’acquérir une
petite activité minière en Afrique du Sud. Ainsi, nous pouvons tracer la provenance de toute pierre que nous vendons, ce qui crée un lien fort avec les acheteurs. Car cette
pierre aura de l’importance pour eux – ils les achètent pour
des mariages, des anniversaires, une grande occasion.
Alors l’histoire est transmise.
Nous sommes également différents car nos clients ont
leur mot à dire sur le design dans notre joaillerie. Nos
designers et nos clients se rencontrent, comme si un chef
demandait à ses clients quels ingrédients ils préfèrent. Nous
avons avec nous des diplômés de George Brown College,
Toronto, qui travaillent sur le design et nous souhaitons
pérenniser ce processus. Nous essayons d’éviter l’aspect
élitiste de bien des joailleries haut de gamme.
Jeffrey et moi venons d’Afrique du Sud. J’y étais avocat
avant de travailler dans les finances à New York. En 2010,
Jeffrey s’est intéressé à la création d’un concept de vente et
il m’a demandé de l’aider à donner vie à ce projet. Chacun
apportait des qualifications différentes et cela a bien marché.
Notre boutique/atelier se trouve au centre de Toronto et nous
avons aussi une boutique à Vaughan. Je voyage surtout
entre Toronto et Newark afin de passer les fins de semaine
en famille au Connecticut.
Avec quatre mines dans le nord-ouest, le Canada est
l’un des trois principaux pays producteurs de diamants.
Nous avons accès à ces pierres, mais nous trouvons que
leur coût est trop élevé et les clients rechignent à payer
davantage pour elles. Mais, à l’avenir, il y a un potentiel pour
intégrer toute notre activité au Canada.
L’attrait des diamants n’est pas un secret. Leur éclat est
irrésistible. Parfois, je prends du recul par rapport à notre
activité et je me dis : « Oh, ça c’est vraiment impressionnant.
Nous avons créé quelque chose qui va durer. » Pas étonnant
que Cléopâtre et tous les rois, reines, empereurs, tsars et
stars de cinéma aiment autant ces pierres.

In 2008 Shaun Francis found himself talking with General
Rick Hillier, Canada’s former top soldier, about something
that concerned both of them: veterans of Canada’s armed
forces were not being adequately cared for once they
returned home. Not only did gaps in government funding
mean a support shortage throughout periods of rehabilitation
and reintegration, but all too often veterans were invisible in
Canadian society.
A graduate of an elite American military school who
became a Wall Street banker and a successful tech-sector
entrepreneur, Francis was already involved in founding
veterans’ assistance groups in the States. But after moving
back to Toronto, he decided it was time to do something

“We don’t celebrate our veterans,” he says in the
demure offices of True Patriot Love, overlooking
leafy Yorkville in downtown Toronto. “Most people
don’t know anyone in uniform. We certainly don’t
raise much money.”
True Patriot Love is concerned with rehabilitating
veterans who have been physically wounded as
well as combatting post-traumatic stress disorder
among them. It’s a condition that too frequently
goes unseen, affecting otherwise healthyseeming veterans, and tearing lives asunder
once the veterans are out of the service and the
spotlight. “It’s a spectrum,” says Francis. “PTSD
is a real thing, and we’re seeing 10 percent of the
deployed soldiers coming back with something
approaching a PTSD diagnosis.”
True Patriot Love doesn’t deliver services
itself; rather, it disperses the money it raises to
other service agencies that specialize in helping
veterans. Major recipients include the Military
Families Fund, which assists with both physical
and mental rehabilitation and provides practical
help for needs that the government doesn’t
cover, like home renovations to meet veterans’
accessibility needs and the purchase of accessible
vehicles for veterans. The charity also helps
pay for the children of deployed and recently
deployed personnel to attend Camp Maple Leaf,

Canada, raising more than $2 million for military

also for contemplation. “People very seldom sit
down for a couple of hours and think about service
to country,” he says.
There are several reasons that Canadians let the
armed services slip from mind, Francis says. For
one, the armed services are small, and, like those
of all Western countries, all-volunteer; fewer than
1 percent of Canadians serve. Since Canadian
Forces bases are located in outlying areas,
Canadian soldiers and veterans tend to live in rural
areas themselves. And Canada simply doesn’t
have a culture that valorizes the military: it’s rare to
see a service member in uniform.
Some of True Patriot Love’s activities are aimed
squarely at altering the culture and perceptions
surrounding military service. The group has set
about commemorating Canada’s fallen heroes
with the Highway of Heroes – the route of Highway
401 that runs between Canadian Forces Base
Trenton and the coroner’s office in downtown
Toronto, which the convoys carrying deceased
soldiers use when returning them to Canada. As
casualties from the war in Afghanistan mounted,
citizens began lining the bridges along the route,
draping the convoys with flags as they passed
underneath. Now, True Patriot Love is working

to install commemorative plaques on each of
these bridges.
Veterans’ affairs are close to Francis’s heart; he
comes from a military family and is a graduate of
the United States Naval Academy, the elite training
ground of the US Navy, where he was allowed to
apply only after receiving a nomination from the
American ambassador to Canada. (On his office
wall, above a model of a Canadian frigate, is a
picture of him at his graduation with the then US
president George H. W. Bush.) Francis went on
to a career on Wall Street, later moving into the
dot-com world in San Francisco, and ultimately
home to Toronto, where he now leads Medcan, a
private-sector executive health clinic.
Today, True Patriot Love is moving beyond
fundraising and into more-innovative ventures.
In 2012 Francis and a group of wounded
soldiers trekked into the Himalayas, followed
by a documentary crew. After that mountain
climb came a second expedition in 2014. Twelve
wounded vets – some of whom sustained blast
damage from shells and mines, others who were
suffering from PTSD – flew to a spot about 100
kilometres (about 62 miles) from the North Pole (or
at least the north magnetic pole as it was in 1996,
which happened to be the spot most accessible
from Canada) and skied the rest of the way.
These expeditions served a dual purpose:
the film crews and the media coverage they
provided not only promoted awareness of the
challenges that veterans face but demonstrated
how successful rehabilitation could be. And for
the participants themselves, the treks offered
a chance to get back out into the world and
recapture the spirit of adventure. “There’s a huge
high from getting out on the frontier and serving
your country in uniform,” says Francis. “When you
get back, anything you do just doesn’t match up.”
For all the focus on raising money to help
veterans, Francis seems equally concerned with
communicating the character of veterans to a
country that doesn’t always understand them.
“They’re a great group of people in our society
that people don’t know, to be honest,” he says.
“They’re very similar to humanitarians. They’re
cut from the same cloth. They want to serve
something bigger than themselves.”

rivaliser avec ce sentiment. »
Outre ses efforts pour lever des fonds et son
soutien aux vétérans, Francis veut également
mettre en lumière le caractère des vétérans pour
le reste du pays qui ne les comprend pas toujours.
« Dans notre société, c’est un groupe de personnes
que la population ne connaît pas, dit-il. Ils sont
comparables à des travailleurs humanitaires.
Ils sont faits de la même étoffe. Ils veulent servir
quelque chose qui est plus grand qu’eux. »

Thunder Bay is on the make, with imaginative new
restaurants and a revitalized marina. The surrounding
wilderness, however, remains perfectly unchanged.

Like many cities once firmly tied to a resource
economy – Pittsburgh, say, or Hamilton – Thunder
Bay has in recent years undergone a certain
existential makeover. After decades in which its
prosperity was pinned to forestry, shipping and
mining, the city has embraced newer industries
(biotech and medical, specifically) while ramping
up the kind of attractions that might beguile
both professionals in those fields and evergrowing numbers of tourists. Every month, it
seems, new bars and restaurants open, portions
of the waterfront and downtown are spruced
up, public art unveiled and exciting cultural
festivals announced.
To get a glimpse of this metamorphosis, first
secure a room at the McVicar Manor. Much of the
development activity is happening in the oncesleepy core of the city’s north side, also known
as Port Arthur (Thunder Bay was formed in 1970
by the amalgamation of the towns of Port Arthur
and Fort William), and the McVicar is located a
couple of blocks from the core and waterfront.
This B & B, an ornate, sprawling Victorian mansion
built in 1906 and operated for the past few years
by retired teachers Tom and Dorothy Walch,
offers three rooms with both old-world luxury and
contemporary comfort (Body Shop products in
the bathroom, breakfasts that cater to any dietary
needs). “I want our guests to be totally pampered,”
the gregarious Dorothy says, “and we do our best
to do that.” If the weather is accommodating,
park yourself in the large, lush gardens next to the
pleasantly burbling McVicar Creek.
Once you’re settled, stroll down to the
waterfront. Thunder Bay’s location on the shores
of the vast Lake Superior (the largest of the Great
Lakes) has always been its greatest economic and
aesthetic asset, and nothing embodies the city’s
recent transformation as much as the revitalized
marina. Prince Arthur’s Landing at Marina Park
opened in December 2011, and the family-friendly

different public artworks, it is home to an outdoor
stage (which accommodates free live music and
film nights), a playground, a splash pad/ice rink, a
skate park, walking and biking trails, an art gallery,
innovative gardens, monuments to the city’s naval
heritage and, of course, an active marina (with
more than 270 slips). It’s a joyful place, and the
nearby under-construction condominiums as well
as the promises of a new luxury hotel and arena
signal that this revitalization has only just begun.

It would be easy to spend the whole weekend
here, but at the very least you’ll want to devote
some time to the Gathering Circle in the Spirit
Garden and the Baggage Building Arts Centre.
The former is a collaboration between the Brook
McIlroy architectural firm and the Ojibwa architect
Ryan Gorrie. A modern and stirring interpretation
of a traditional bentwood structure and woven
from green, malleable spruce trees, the pavilion
has quickly become a gathering place for
celebrations, music, ceremonies, even protests.
The Baggage Building, for its part, is a bustling
art gallery, teaching facility and studio space.

Regional artists are a staple here: on a given day,
you might even find a Thunder Bay painter who
has set up her easel and oils in the lobby. Upstairs,
the whimsical Gift Gallery houses more local
arts and crafts – muffin mixes using specially
milled flour, or custom wine stoppers encrusted
with tide-polished stones from the shores of
Lake Superior.
After browsing through the gift shop, grab a
lunchtime seat on the patio at Bight, in the heart
of the marina. The attractive and accommodating
restaurant (celiacs and vegetarians are treated
well) offers unparalleled views of the lake and the
Sleeping Giant, the famous rock peninsula that
juts out of the lake. If Thunder Bay is known for
anything in culinary circles, it’s Finnish pancakes
(Hoito’s is the go-to) and the curious confection
known as the Persian (a doughnut-like pastry
smothered in pink cream), but the gastronomic
landscape has dramatically expanded and evolved
over the past few years. Bight’s eclectic menu is
a fine example of these changes, with inventive
variations on old-school staples: the popular beet
gnocchi is smothered in a smoked almond pesto,
while tzatziki and avocado transform the falafel-like
veggie burger into a “Middleterranean” original. At
Tomlin, another recent addition to the scene, you

péninsule rocheuse qui s’enfonce dans le lac. Si la
cuisine de Thunder Bay est réputée, c’est pour ses
crêpes finlandaises (chez Hoito) et une douceur
curieuse baptisée Persian (genre de beignet nappé
de crème rose), mais le paysage gastronomique a
bien changé ces dernières années. Le menu varié
de Bight est un bon exemple de ce changement
avec ses variations créatives sur des recettes traditionnelles : le populaire gnocchi de betteraves est
nappé de pesto aux amandes fumées, le tzatziki et
l’avocat font du hamburger végétarien style falafel
une « création » originale. Tomlin, un nouveau venu,
propose de petites assiettes de brocoli noirci, tartare de saumon et calmar frit.

crudo, trout brandade and crispy fried squid.
While Thunder Bay’s retail development hasn’t
quite kept pace with its gastronomic evolution, no
visit to the city is complete without a visit to Finnport,
in the centre of Little Finland. Thunder Bay’s Finnish
population is famously the largest outside Finland
itself, and a charming community sprung up
more than 100 years ago around the intersection
of Bay and Algoma. Authentic saunas and the
aforementioned pancakes are the neighbourhood’s
most familiar draws, but Finnport is the crown
jewel. Like having Helsinki in your hand, the shop
is crammed to the rafters with Finnish and other
Scandinavian products and gifts, from Marimekko
and Moomin mainstays to more unusual items such
as blueberry pickers and birch leaf pouches.
Finish off your first day in Thunder Bay with a
meal a bit further afield, between Port Arthur and
Fort William, in the so-called Intercity part of town.
Here, amid the big-box stores and industrial parks,
you’ll find a pioneer in the city’s food scene: Caribou
Restaurant and Wine Bar. Opened about 13 years
ago by two former Keg managers, the specialty
of the relaxed bistro is contemporary Canadian
food, with a keen eye to seasonality and local
ingredients. “There’s always a good energy here,”
says Jeff Hupka, front of house manager. “We
want to make people feel welcome.” Upon walking
through the front door, diners are immediately
greeted by a humming open kitchen and an inviting
wood-burning oven, turning out a wide-ranging
but focused array of dishes: seared red-fin trout,
say, caught that morning, or a salad that pairs fried
Thunder Oak Gouda with Belluz Farms greens,
snap peas and radishes. Hupka keeps the wine
list comparably distinctive: two-ounce wine flights
– on this day, a trio of Spanish whites – allow you to
sample several varietals.

Mais pas trop car le lendemain il faut explorer la
nature. De nombreux visiteurs viennent à Thunder
Bay pour les grands espaces. En quelques minutes de voiture, on se retrouve en pleine brousse
ou sur l’eau qui s’étend à l’infini. Vers l’ouest, une
demi-heure suffit pour atteindre le parc provincial
de Kakabeka Falls. Le facile sentier Mountain Portage Trail suit le tracé du portage historique qui
a permis aux premiers voyageurs de faire le tour
des chutes qui ont donné leur nom à ce petit parc.
Celles-ci sont le sublime point focal du parc, un
spectacle garanti en toute saison, observable sous
plusieurs angles. Kakabeka héberge ours noirs,
cerfs, orignaux et renards et le sentier de Poplar
Point est idéal pour observer la faune sauvage.
Après Kakabeka, mettez le cap au nord-est,
vers Nipigon. À l’approche de Thunder Bay, vous

Not too many, mind you, because the next
morning, you’ll want to wake early and venture out
of town. Despite the temptations of downtown,
many visitors to Thunder Bay are there because
of the city’s pleasant proximity to the wilderness.
Within just a few minutes’ drive, you can be in
deep bush or out on seemingly endless water.
Head west and in less than half an hour you’ll
arrive at Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park. The gentle
Mountain Portage Trail traces the historic portage
that allowed early travellers to circumnavigate
the falls for which the small park is named. The
sublime centrepiece of the park, naturally, is the
falls themselves, a spectacle in all seasons and
easily adored from a few different viewing pods.
Kakabeka is home to black bears, deer, moose
and foxes, and the Poplar Point hiking trail is the
best place to find wildlife.
After Kakabeka, head northeast toward
Nipigon. As you near the outskirts of Thunder Bay,
you’ll see signs for the Terry Fox Courage Highway.
This 83-kilometre (52-mile) stretch of Highway
11/17 is dedicated to the remarkable young man
who in 1980, with one leg having been amputated,
tried to run across Canada to raise money for
cancer research. Fox’s Marathon of Hope ended
outside Thunder Bay, sadly, and a majestic
amethyst-and-bronze monument celebrating his
achievement stands off the highway a kilometre
east of Hodder Avenue.
Continue on the highway another 45 minutes or
so until you reach Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park.
A one-kilometre (0.6-mile) loop leads to the top of
the canyon, offering vertiginous views of the jawdropping 150-meter-wide (492-foot-wide) gorge
created by thousands of years of ice, wind and
rain. The canyon floor is dotted with rare Arctic
plants, and, if you’re lucky, when you look up,
you’ll see an even rarer peregrine falcon soaring
on the canyon’s warm breezes. In the autumn, the
aspen forest bursts with colour.
After a day of hiking, conclude your Thunder
Bay visit with some locals and a pint or two of
Sleeping Giant ale. Grab a cozy wooden booth
at the Sovereign Room in gentrifying Port Arthur
and see why Tom Walch of the McVicar has
christened the neighbourhood as the city’s “new
entertainment district.” The friendly, three-year-old
gastropub is packed most nights with everyone

boucle d’un kilomètre conduit au sommet du

de 150 mètres de large creusée sur des milliers
d’années par la glace, le vent et la pluie. Le fond
du canyon regorge de plantes arctiques rares et,
avec un peu de chance, vous pourrez apercevoir
un faucon pèlerin, encore plus rare, profiter des
thermiques de la gorge. En automne, la forêt de
trembles est un arc-en-ciel de couleurs.
Après cette journée de marche, terminez
votre visite de Thunder Bay en passant par un
pub local pour goûter à l’ale Sleeping Giant.

There is, indeed, an inclusive and unpretentious
air to the place – you might have Brooklyn art
rockers Dirty Projectors on the stereo but Wayne’s
World playing on the TV behind the bar and young
families splitting pizzas topped with, of all things,
Thunder Oak curds and duck confit. It’s not a
scene that the name Thunder Bay immediately
conjures, but as the city slowly, inexorably evolves,
it’s a scene that is becoming increasingly familiar.

Old Port, named for the owners’ hometown (also the birthplace of Jacques

My son Andre loves history. That’s why we’re doing this trip to

We travel together a lot for work – in Toronto today for a few
hours only. We’re only in Canada once every two months, but we

My role as Supervisor in Purchasing/Warranty involves
purchasing and restocking all the parts needed for the Porter
fleet, and also dealing with any warranty or repair issues that
may arise. It’s a job that requires organization, gathering
numerous different quotes; negotiation, ensuring we get the
best deal; and of course communication, not just with vendors
but with the Porter engineering department, which examines

every repair quote and makes sure the work will be
done correctly and at the right price.
On the purchasing side I’m continually working
with suppliers, both for consumable parts such
as brackets, screws, bolts or sealant, which need
continual restocking, and for serialized component
parts, at a much higher value, which can range from
cockpit display units to starter generators or ice
detector probes.
I manage two administrators in the Purchasing/
Warranty department, and we are based in a hangar
at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. It’s a great place
to soak up the action, watch the planes come and
go, see our work clicking into gear not just on the
telephone or the computer but also on the ground.
When I first started at Porter in May 2006, before
the first flight had even taken off, we had no room

brick. I feel proud to have been with the company
for so long, to have played my own little part in its
evolution. The learning curve is steep, always with
new things to learn.
What do I love about my job? Talking to
vendors and suppliers, maintaining good, positive
relationships with them, whether they are from small
local businesses or huge multinational corporations.
I think the best day of my job so far, however, was
my five-year anniversary at Porter. All of us with five
years of service received individual letters of thanks
from President and CEO Robert Deluce and free
return tickets on a Porter flight of our choice, and we
went to a celebratory lunch. Everyone was in such
high spirits that day. And I felt part of the company’s
big achievement.
I chose to fly to Chicago with my free Porter tickets,
and I took a friend with me. I’d never been to the city,
and I fell in love with it, mostly for its extraordinary
architecture. Other places I’ve flown to on Porter
are Ottawa, Montréal and Halifax, which is another
favourite. My spirits soared when faced with that
beautiful Atlantic view.
I’ve lived in Toronto for 14 years, having arrived
from Belarus, then still part of the USSR. Toronto
is a very friendly, easy place to live in comparison.
I love the water, so on the weekends I go walking
on the shore of Lake Ontario. Other things I enjoy?
Hanging out with my son, playing sports. I love art,
too, so I’ll often spend a Saturday visiting galleries.
I sometimes go home to visit my mom and sister in
Russia, but I like the lifestyle here. I wouldn’t turn the
clock back for anything.

nos pièces. Nous sommes vraiment partis de rien
et nous avons dû tout commander, créer des systèmes de stockage et bâtir le service brique par brique. Je suis fière de travailler pour la société depuis
si longtemps et d’avoir joué un petit rôle dans son
évolution. Il faut apprendre vite car il y a constamment de nouvelles choses à intégrer.
Ce que j’aime dans ce travail ? Parler aux
représentants et aux fournisseurs en entretenant
de bonnes relations positives, qu’il s’agisse de
petites entreprises locales ou de multinationales.
Je crois toutefois que mon meilleur jour chez Porter
a été l’anniversaire de mes cinq ans. Tous ceux qui
avaient cinq années de service ont alors reçu une
lettre de félicitations de Robert Deluce, le PDG de
Porter et des billets d’avions sur un vol Porter de
notre choix. Nous avons aussi fêté ça au restaurant.
Ce jour-là, tout le monde était si heureux. Je sentais
que j’avais participé à la réussite de l’entreprise.
Avec mes billets Porter gratuits, j’ai choisi d’aller
à Chicago avec un ami. Je ne connaissais pas
cette ville et je l’ai vraiment adorée, surtout son
architecture extraordinaire. Avec Porter, je suis
également allée à Ottawa, Montréal et Halifax, une
autre de mes villes préférées. J’ai été bouleversée
par les superbes panoramas sur l’Altantique.
J’habite à Toronto depuis quatorze ans. Je viens
de Biélorussie qui faisait alors partie de l’Union
soviétique. Par comparaison, Toronto est une ville
si chaleureuse où il fait bon vivre. J’adore l’eau, alors
les fins de semaines je vais souvent me promener
sur les rives du lac Ontario. Les autres choses que
j’aime ? Sortir avec mon fils, faire du sport. J’adore
aussi l’art et je vais donc souvent visiter des galeries
le samedi. Parfois, je vais rendre visite à ma mère
et à ma sœur en Russie, mais je préfère le style de
vie canadien. Je ne voudrais pour rien au monde
revenir en arrière.
