NOVEMBER
Les Très riches heures du Duc de Berry - November
Our first Newsletter was very well received and we thank you for your
enthusiasm. Please do not hesitate to send us suggestions for future
editions. We need you!
In our Canton, November and the Toussaint holidays often mark a
slowdown in various activities ; for some of us it also means being away
from Corrèze until the next holiday. We hope that these monthly
newsletters will keep everyone in touch with local events and with each
other.

To illustrate each newsletter, we have chosen miniatures from the 15th century
calendar, Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. November depicts a traditional
rural autumn scene : la glandée. The painting shows pigs in an oak forest with their
swineherd and his dog. The man is hitting the trees with his stick in order to fell
the acorns for the pigs to fatten up on. The background shows a castle, a river and
mountains, a landscape reminiscent of the French Alps – the miniature (circa 1845/
46) was attributed to Jean Colombe who at the time was working for Charles 1st of
Savoy.
