This research has enhanced evidence based communication and psycho-social care across the cancer continuum from diagnosis, through treatment, remission and survivorship or relapse, palliative care and bereavement support for families and caregivers. She has worked clinically as a bereavement counsellor for 16 years. Liz spent 7 years in the Medical Psychology Research Unit and in 2003 was awarded a 4 year NH&MRC Australian Clinical Research Fellowship and re-located to the WA Centre for Cancer & Palliative Care in Perth. She was appointed Deputy-Director of the Centre and Associate Professor of Psycho-oncology at Edith Cowan University. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University of Technology. Research Interests: Liz’s research interests include the communication of prognosis in early stage breast cancer and metastatic cancer, the process of genetic counselling in familial breast and ovarian cancer, dignity therapy in advanced breast and ovarian cancer and complicated grief. Current research projects: Liz is currently CI on an NH&MRC funded group education program for family caregivers of people receiving palliative care in an inpatient setting and a $1M Strategic Partnership Research Program Grant with the Cancer Council NSW on the psychological impact of hereditary cancer and the development and evaluation of effective patient education and decision support strategies. She was recently appointed to an NIH funded international risk communication panel on familial cancer which will meet at Duke University in North Carolina in September 2008. She has recently collaborated on a number of projects including a study to identify ethical issues in cancer genetic consultations; an intervention to address the unmet needs of survivors of haematological malignancies; a protocol to address stress and burn-out in palliative care nurses; a communication aid for women diagnosed with DCIS; and the appropriate timing, sources and content for information on radiation therapy information for breast cancer patients. Teaching Area & Committee Activities: Liz teaches sessions in End of Life Issues and Bereavement in the Health Psychology Course at the University of Sydney.
