Introduction
« Le labyrinthe »
Indissociablement lié à l’histoire de Dédale et Icare et à celle de Thésée et du
Minotaure, le labyrinthe constitue un mythe à part entière. Parcours initiatique
archaïque associé aux rites de passage à l’âge adulte, il est également symbole de
savoir et de perfection techniques. Par la suite, le labyrinthe se chargera de
significations diverses et parfois antagonistes (ordre et chaos, équilibre et angoisse,
etc.), et inspirera de nombreuses œuvres plastiques, littéraires et
cinématographiques, ainsi que des recherches scientifiques aux multiples
applications.

Dans cette séquence pédagogique, on se familiarisera avec les labyrinthes
végétaux à travers la visite virtuelle des jardins de Hampton Court et de Hever Castle
avant d’aborder l’étude d’une scène du film de Stanley Kubrick, The Shining.
La tâche finale consistera à rédiger un dépliant touristique.

• Découvrir l'art des jardins anglais et son utilisation dans la littérature
victorienne (prolongements).
• Introduction à l’œuvre de Stanley KUBRICK à travers une scène du film The
Shining.
Communicatifs
• Compréhension de l’écrit : lecture de différents documents sur les jardins
anglais, et particulièrement les labyrinthes végétaux (hedge maze).
• Expression orale : s'exprimer en « live », sans préparation (diriger quelqu'un
puis décrire une scène de film à quelqu'un qui ne la voit pas: rôle de
médiation).
• Expression écrite : rédiger un dépliant touristique ou une page web.
Langagiers
• Lexique : le jardin, les directions, les matériaux, l'analyse filmique
• Grammaire : comparatif et superlatif.
• Phonétique : différentiation du /ɑ/et /ɑː/.
Tâche finale
• Rédiger le dépliant touristique du jardin (imaginaire) où se trouverait le
labyrinthe ayant servi au tournage de The Shining.

The hedge maze
Scénario pédagogique
Les Objectifs énoncés sont ancrés sur les recommandations du Cadre européen
commun de référence pour les langues (CECRL, Conseil de l’Europe, 2001) :
• Culturels / Interculturels (cf. chapitre V, 1. Compétences générales : savoir,
aptitudes et savoir-faire, savoir être et savoir apprendre).
• Communicatifs : activités de communication langagière et stratégies,
capacités traitées (cf. chapitre IV).
• Langagiers : compétences linguistiques, sociolinguistiques et pragmatiques
(cf. chapitre V, 2. Compétences spécifiques).
Les Documents supports constituent autant de types de « textes » authentiques
permettant de travailler les objectifs (cf. chapitre IV).
2 étapes pouvant correspondre à 2 séances de cours
Étape 1
Objectif et dispositif préconisé
Au cours de cette étape, les élèves découvrent deux labyrinthes végétaux (hedge
mazes) célèbres avant de guider leur camarade à travers ces mêmes labyrinthes.
Un accès à Internet est nécessaire.
Activité 1
La séance commence par une webquest guidée qui permet aux élèves de découvrir
ce qu'est le labyrinthe végétal (hedge maze) dans les jardins anglais.
Le professeur s’appuie pour cela sur les Documents 1 puis distribue la Fiche
Élève 1 que les élèves remplissent. Cette fiche porte à la fois sur l'histoire et les
caractéristiques de cet art du jardin.
On procède ensuite à la correction.

Activité 2
Par deux et à l'oral, les élèves s’appuient sur le Document 2 et les Documents 3
pour jouer à un jeu consistant à guider l'autre à travers deux labyrinthes végétaux
célèbres d'Angleterre (Hampton Court et Turner's Hill). Cette activité leur permet de
revoir comment indiquer les directions.
Étape 2
Objectif et dispositif préconisé
Après une brève phase de révision, les élèves sont invités à travailler par deux sur
une séquence du film de Stanley Kubrick, The Shining qui met en scène un
labyrinthe.
L’accès à des ordinateurs reliés à l’Internet est requis.
Activité 3
Après une brève séance de rebrassage permettant de mettre en avant les principales
caractéristiques du hedge maze, les élèves travaillent sur The Shining, film de
Stanley Kubrick où cet élément paysager est utilisé pour susciter l'étrange et la
terreur. (Documents 4)
Dans un premier temps, les élèves font une brève recherche sur le film à partir du
site The Internet Movie Database, de manière à se familiariser avec les
personnages, les lieux et le genre (Fiche Élève 2 partie A).
Activité 4
Ensuite, ils se mettent par deux pour une activité orale à partir d'un extrait de The
Shining disponible sur YouTube (Documents 4) : un élève visionne la scène sans le
son et la décrit en direct à son camarade qui ne la voit pas. Cette activité vise à
entraîner les élèves à trouver des mots simples, dans l'urgence. Une réelle attente
est créée par le fait qu'un des deux élèves n’a pas accès à l'image. Il faut insister
pour que cette activité se fasse immédiatement, sans visionnage préalable. Les
élèves visionnent ensuite la scène ensemble et étudient différents aspects de la mise
en scène. Il est envisageable de poursuivre cette étude par le visionnage d'un extrait
de la scène finale où Jack, devenu fou, poursuit son fils dans le labyrinthe enneigé.
Activité 6
La séquence se finit par une tâche finale écrite : les élèves sont invités à imaginer un
château où l'on pourrait visiter le labyrinthe ayant servi lors du tournage de The
Shining et à rédiger un dépliant touristique ou une page web sur ce jardin
(imaginaire).

Prolongements possibles
Cette séquence peut être prolongée, ou entrecoupée, par l'étude d'un texte littéraire
où figure ce hedge maze. Quelques exemples sont donnés ci-dessous :

Definition of a hedge maze:
It is a horticultural labyrinth, a maze in which the dividers are made of vertical
hedges (yew, hornbeam).
Main use:
They were considered as forms of amusement for kings and queens. People
liked being confused.
Who was Capability Brown?
He was royal gardener at Hampton Court. He replaced formal gardens with
natural-looking features. But he was not allowed to interfere with the maze, to
change its design or shape.
What makes Hampton Court Palace hedge maze unique?
It's one of the oldest ones in the world, that's why it's also the most famous
one. It was designed by King William III and dates back to 1702.
Sum up the history of hedge mazes :
- Until the 18th century:
Mainly in the "wealthiest palaces" throughout Europe (Germany,
France, Holland and Britain)
- in the 19th century :
less elitist, built in parks, palaces open to the public, more accessible.

D. FINAL TASK
The hedge maze in The Shining was not a real one: it was a set up for the movie.
Imagine a tourist place where it could be seen: choose a country, a building (castle or
not),
gardens, a name and write down the tourism leaflet or webpage of the place. Do not
forget
prices, timetable, photos, map and directions, etc. The leaflet should make people
feel like
visiting the place.

What is strange in the recording of their voices? Although the characters are far
away from the camera, their voices can still be heard very clearly, as if they
were very close to it.
What else can you hear? There is a very weird music.
How is their disappearance quickened? It is quickened by the sign with the map
of the maze. This sign invades the screen and makes the characters vanish
suddenly.
2. Jack Torrance
Where is the camera when he arrives in the hall? The camera is behind him, it
seems to be following him.
What impression is conveyed? It looks as if someone was stalking Jack, as if he
were in danger.

Find another element which gives this impression? The music is also weird and
suggests a possible threat.
3.The maze
Where does the source of confusion lie? The spectators think that the shot
corresponds to the scale model Jack is looking at, but in fact, they see Wendy
and her son running inside. It is confusing not to know what is on the screen.
