Health Sciences North welcomes a new General
Practitioner/Palliative Care,
Dr. Ravi Singh
Ravi Singh is a Sudburian who attended the University of Ottawa where he
obtained his M.D. in 2009. He completed a residency in family medicine at
Queen’s in early 2012.
In March, Ravi joined HSN’s Hospitalist Program and also provides our
oncology patients with palliative care.

Le Dr Ravi Singh est un Sudburois qui a obtenu son doctorat en médecine
de l’Université d’Ottawa en 2009. Il a terminé sa résidence en médecine
familiale à l’Université Queen’s au début de 2012.
En mars, il s’est joint au Service de médecins hospitaliers et donne des
soins palliatifs aux patients d’HSN atteints d’un cancer.

Practitioner, Dr. Brad Long
Dr. Long attended the SABA School of Medicine in the Netherlands,
Antilles where he obtained his M.D. in 2008. He subsequently
completed his residency in family medicine in 2011at the Central
Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine. Most recently, he worked
as an emergency room physician in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Dr. Long joined HSN’s Hospitalist Program in May 2012.

Physician, Dr. Jeff Middaugh
Dr. Middaugh attended the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM)
where he obtained his M.D. in 2009. He then completed his residency in
Family Medicine in 2011 by combining his training at the University of British
Columbia and NOSM. He then completed additional residency training in
Emergency Medicine with NOSM in 2012.
Dr. Middaugh joined HSN’s Emergency Department in July 2012.

Three Sudburians have joined forces and will be offering area residents
access to primary care.
Drs. Simon Côté, Yannick Charette and Christopher Nizzero completed
their undergraduate studies and a family medicine residency at the
Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Dr. Hepting is a Sudburian who obtained her M.D. at the Northern
Ontario School of Medicine, Sudbury Campus, in 2010. She
subsequently completed her residency in Family Medicine in 2012.
In July, Dr. Hepting joined HSN’s
Hospitalist Program and is actively providing community care.

Emergency Medicine Physician,
Dr. Samuel Stone
Dr. Stone obtained his MD at McMaster University in 2005. He completed
his Family Medicine Residency and CCFP/EM Fellowship at the Northern
Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay in June 2012. He is an Assistant
Professor at NOSM and a Master Instructor with the Canadian Emergency
Ultrasound Society.
Dr. Stone joined HSN’s Emergency Department in July 2012.

Physician, Dr. Alex Anawati
Dr. Anawati is originally from Sturgeon Falls and was part of NOSM’s
charter class where he obtained his M.D. in 2009. He then
completed his Residency in Rural Family Medicine at the University
of British Colombia where he worked in the western arctic. He
returned to Sudbury for a third year in Emergency Medicine training
in 2011.
Dr. Anawati joined HSN’s Emergency Department in July 2012.

Physician, Dr. Christian Laniel
Dr. Laniel attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his M.D. in
2009 and completed his residency in Family Medicine in 2011. He
followed that by completing additional residency training in Emergency
Medicine with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2012. Prior to
studying medicine, Dr. Laniel worked as Legal Counsel for the Department
of Justice Canada in Ottawa, ON from 1998 - 2005.
Dr. Laniel joined HSN’s Emergency Department in August 2012.

Dr. Christine Pun
Dr. Pun obtained her M.D. at the University of Toronto. She then
completed her residency in Family Medicine at Dalhousie University in
Cape Breton. Dr. Pun brings nearly 10 years of Family Medicine
experience after practicing in Elliot Lake, ON since 2003.
Dr. Pun joined the Emergency Department in September 2012 and is
working towards her Certification of Special Competence in Emergency
Medicine. She will also be working with the Hospitalist Team and providing
other services at HSN, in the community and with NOSM.

Practitioner, Dr. Rosie Yesovitch
Dr. Yesovitch obtained her M.D. at McGill in 2006 followed by a family
residency at Queen’s. Since 2008, she has been involved in primary
care to residents in various communities from Nunavut to Hamilton, to
Northwestern Ontario communities.
In September, she joined her husband, Dr. Sam Stone, CCFP/EM in
Sudbury and has been providing community care since then.

La Dre Yesovitch a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l’Université
McGill en 2006, puis fait sa résidence en médecine familiale à

résidents de collectivités du Nunavut à Hamilton et à celles du NordOuest.

Dr. Chau obtained his M.D. from Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. He then
completed a family medicine residency through the Northeastern Ontario Family
Medicine (NOFM) Program in Sudbury, followed by a Care of the Elderly
Fellowship through the University of Ottawa. Dr. Chau has worked as a family
physician and Care of the Elderly Consultant in Elliot Lake, ON since 2003.
Dr. Chau has joined Dr. Jo-Anne Clarke’s team and is based at the

Kingston, en Ontario. Il a ensuite fait sa résidence par l’entremise du Programme
de médecine familiale du Nord-Est de l’Ontario à Sudbury, puis un stage en soins
aux personnes âgées à l’Université d’Ottawa. Il est médecin de famille et donne
des soins aux personnes âgées à Elliot Lake depuis 2003.
Il s’est joint à l’équipe de la Dre Jo-Anne Clarke et travaille des locaux des

Emily Notman grew up in Kingston, Ontario and completed a BSc. in
Biomedical Science at the University of Guelph in 2006. She then received
her Medical Degree from the University of Toronto in 2010 before
completing her residency in family medicine at Queen's University,
Kingston, in 2012.
Dr. Notman joined Drs. Olivier and Mailloux in September 2012 and will be
accepting new patients this Fall via Health Care Connect.

Central America with his clinical training in Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Moudgil completed his residency training with NOSM, West Campus
and is back in Sudbury with the goal of starting a family practice in the
new year.

Dr. Abderrahim Khomani
Dr. Khomani earned his M.D. from St. Petersburg State Pediatric-Medical
Academy in Russia, and completed specialty residency training in Internal
Medicine at Boston University/Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence
Rhode Island.
After working at the Georgetown University/ Lombardi Cancer Center in
Washington, he completed sub-specialty training as a clinical fellow in Medical
Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia in 2009. He
practiced at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Maine where he
served as the lead thoracic Medical Oncologist prior to joining Sudbury.
Dr. Khomani is fluent in Arabic, French, Russian, and English and joined the
Medical Oncology team March 5th, 2012.

Après avoir travaillé au Lombardi Cancer Centre de l’Université Georgetown de
Washington, il a suivi une formation dans une sous-spécialité (oncologie
médicale), à titre d’associé de recherche clinique, au Medical College of
Georgia, à Augusta, Georgia, en 2009. Avant son arrivée à Sudbury, il était le
principal oncologue médical thoracique du Harold Alfond Center for Cancer
Care, dans le Maine.
Le Dr Khomani parle couramment l’arabe, le français, le russe et l’anglais. Il s’est
joint à l’équipe d’oncologie médicale le 5 mars 2012.

Dr. Nicole Jacobi
Dr. Jacobi earned her M.D. from Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitaet Mainz, in
Germany and completed specialty residency training in Internal Medicine in
Wisconsin, followed by fellowship training in Haematology/Oncology at the University
of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She also holds a Masters in Clinical Research from the
School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and is completing a
Masters in Education from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
Dr. Jacobi worked in the Department of Haematology/Oncology at the University
Clinic of Luebeck, Germany prior to joining Sudbury.
Dr. Jacobi is fluent in German, English and French, and joined the Medical Oncology
team June 1st, 2012.

interne à Wisconsin, et elle a suivi une formation dans une sous-spécialité (oncologie
médicale) à la University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Elle détient une maîtrise en
recherche clinique de la School of Public Health, University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis et complète maintenant sa maîtrise en Éducation médicale de la
University of Heidelberg, en Allemagne.
Avant son arrivée à Sudbury, la Dr Jacobi, il était le principal oncologue médical du
Service d’oncologie médicale de la University Clinic de Luebeck.

Dr. Jeremie Stewart
Dr. Stewart is a Sudburian who received his M.D. from Ottawa in 2006
and then went on to anesthesia residency training in Ottawa and
Sudbury. He subsequently completed fellowship training in Cardiac
Anesthesiology and TEE at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in
June of 2012.
Dr. Stewart joined the Anaesthesia Department in July 2012.

Dr. Kim Wong
Dr. Wong obtained her M.D. Degree at the University of Ottawa in 2006
and then completed an Anaesthesia residency at McMaster University in
Hamilton in 2011. She then went on to complete a one year fellowship in
Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine at Dalhousie University in
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Dr. Wong joined the Anaesthesia Department at Health Sciences North in
August 2012.

Dr. Karen Splinter
Dr. Splinter completed her M.D. at the University of Ottawa in 2007. She
then pursued an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency, at Memorial
University in Newfoundland, which she completed in 2012.
Dr. Splinter has been accepting new consults in all areas of obstetrics and
gynecology since August 13, 2012. Of particular interest are Minimally
Invasive Gynecology and Urogynecology procedures.

obstétricienne et gynécologue
La Dre Splinter a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l’Université
d’Ottawa en 2007. En 2012, elle terminait sa résidence en obstétrique et
gynécologie, à l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve.

Health Sciences North welcomes a new geriatrician,
Dr. Janet McElhaney
Dr. McElhaney obtained her M.D. and completed an Internal Medicine
and Geriatric Medicine residency training at the University of Alberta in
1991. Dr. McElhaney has been on the faculty of academic health centres
in both Canada and the United States including the University of Alberta,
Eastern Virginia Medical School, University of Connecticut Health Center
and, most recently, University of British Columbia. Dr. McElhaney is
recognized for her innovations in the care of seniors mainly in the hospital
setting, through the establishment of interdisciplinary teams to support
care in this vulnerable population.
Hospital-based consultation will begin September 17th
in association with Dr. James Chau, Care of the Elderly physician with the
North East Specialized Geriatric Services.

La Dre McElhaney a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l’Université de
l’Alberta, puis y a terminé sa résidence en médecine interne et en
gériatrie en 1991. Elle a enseigné à divers centres universitaires de santé
du Canada et des États-Unis, notamment à l’Université de l’Alberta, à la
Eastern Virginia Medical School, au University of Connecticut Health
Center, et tout récemment, à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Elle
est connue pour ses innovations en matière de soins aux personnes âgées,
surtout en milieu hospitalier, par l’entremise de la mise sur pied d’équipes
interdisciplinaires permettant d’appuyer les soins à ces personnes
vulnérables.
La Dre McElhaney a amorcé ses consultations en milieu hospitalier le 17
septembre, en collaboration avec le Dr James Chau, médecin prodiguant
des soins aux personnes âgées au sein des Services gériatriques
spécialisés du Nord-Est. La préférence sera accordée aux situations

Health Sciences North welcomes a new Neurologist,
Dr. Salil Gupta
Dr. Gupta received his early medical training from Rajasthan University in India,
followed by residency training in Neurology at the University of Bombay in 1989.
He brings with him a wealth of experience from across the globe, including
experience as a Consultant Neurologist in Saudi Arabia and India. Dr. Gupta
recently completed an Adult Neurology residency at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Gupta will be joining the Medicine Department on November 5, 2012 and will
be participating in HSN’s weekly Stroke Prevention Clinics.

Le Dr Gupta a d’abord suivi sa formation médicale à l’Université Rajasthan, en
Inde, puis il a terminé sa résidence en neurologie à l’Université de Bombay, en
1989. Il possède une vaste expérience acquise à l’échelle mondiale, y compris à
titre de neurologue-conseil en Arabie Saoudite et en Inde. Il a récemment
terminé sa résidence en neurologie chez l’adulte à l’Université de Toronto.
Le 5 novembre 2012, il se joindra au Service de médecine interne et participera
aux séances hebdomadaires d’HSN sur la prévention des accidents
cérébrovasculaires.

Dr. Kristiina Sutherland
Dr. Sutherland obtained her M.D. in 2006 from McMaster University in
Hamilton. She then trained in Family Medicine before completing her
Psychiatry training (2012) through the Northern Stream Program at the
University of Ottawa.
Dr. Sutherland will be joining HSN’s Mental Health & Addiction Program in
November 2012.

Dr. Elendu Okoronkwo
Dr. Okoronkwo received his M.D. in 2002 from the University of Nigeria after which
he participated in the Mater/University College Dublin Postgraduate Psychiatric
Program in Ireland and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrist,
United Kingdom. Most recently, Dr. Okoronkwo has been working as a
consultant in General Adult Psychiatry at St. Ita’s Hospital in Portrane, Ireland. Dr.
Okoronkwo is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.
Dr. Okoronkwo will be joining the Mental Health & Addictions Program in
November 2012.

Dr. Peter Ajueze
Dr. Ajueze received his M.D. in 2003 from the University of Benin in Nigeria.
His residency led him to Ireland where he completed his training in Clinical
Psychiatry (2007) as well as Health Economics (2009). His most recent
experience has been in South London and Maudsley Trust, England where
he was practicing Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Ajueze will be joining the Mental Health & Addictions Program in
November 2012.
