Our Mission Statement
The Parish of the Holy Name of Jesus is a vibrant urban ministry in the Roman Catholic Church
within the Franciscan tradition. In our rich diversity of cultures and languages, we seek to be open to
God’s spirit so that we might grow in the faith that makes us one and give witness to the presence of
Christ in our daily lives. As instruments of God’s peace, we reach out to and welcome all people
with a special concern for the poor, the alienated, and the immigrant. We do this through worship,
education, and outreach in fulfilling our dream that all might be served in the spirit of St. Francis.

Friar’s Forum Program
This year’s Friar’s Forum Adult Education Program focuses
on Mass and the New Roman Missal which will be introduced next month across the English speaking world.
Change is coming! Rather than being upset or thrown-off by
it, as a community let us prepare for it by furthering our education about the mass and learning first-hand about the new
translation of the prayers that we will soon be using. Change
is never easy, but knowing what to expect and why we are
being asked to pray differently, will make these changes less
difficult.
The next presentation in the series will take place at 7:00PM
on this coming Tuesday, October 18th in the lower chapel. It
is entitled “The Eucharist: A Short History” and will be
given by Fr. Matthew. Please make every effort to attend.
Parishioners at the 9:00AM Mass:
The second presentation this week is directed specifically to
those of you who attend this mass. It will be given by Fr. Dan
in the lower chapel at 10:00AM next Sunday, October 23.
Positioning this session immediately after next Sunday’s
mass is an attempt to make it as easy as possible for you to
learn about the changes that will soon be coming our way.
So, we urge you, please adjust your schedule next Sunday
and plan on coming to Fr. Dan’s presentation after going to
mass. It is entitled: “Changing How We Pray: A Guide to the
New Translation of the Roman Missal.”

Our Parish Celebrates the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome
Today, October 16, 2011 at the 12 Noon Mass our
parish will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome of the inquirers and candidates presently in the
process of Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA. We
joyfully accept into our parish community those inquirers who desire to be baptized into our Christian faith at
the Easter Vigil and welcome those candidates who are
already baptized and will complete their initiation into
the Roman Catholic faith by the reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist.
FRANCISCAN COMMUNITY CENTER
Food Pantry Program
We Need Your Help
All parishioners are encouraged to join in this Rite of
Acceptance and Welcome. The RCIA inquirers as of
yet not baptized officially enter the period of the Catechumenate, several months of intense preparation.
Those already baptized continue the process of
“continuing conversion.”
In this difficult economic time, we are serving more clients
at our Food Pantry Program. The Franciscan Community
Center is in need of canned good donations. We welcome
you to drop them off at the Franciscan Community Center,
214 West 97th Street, Monday through Thursday. Here
are some suggested non-perishable items: canned vegetables, fruits, canned meat, spaghetti, rice, individual juices,
peanut butter, jelly and cereal. We thank you in advanced
for your generosity. Any questions, please call (212) 9328040,ext. 39.
ACTION ALERT from our Parish’s
Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Committee
Want to help feed the hungry?
Ban Fracking in the Delaware River Basin!
Thousands of acres of land in the Delaware River Basin could
be opened by hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), jeopardizing
the public health, the environment and the drinking water of
over 15 million people. The Delaware River Basin Commission is a multi-state body that oversees the management of the
Delaware River water system. The Governors of NY, NJ, DE
and PA and President Obama all have a voice on the DRBC
and will soon be deciding (on October 21st. ) if they will allow
fracking in one of our nation’s most important natural resources.
Call President Obama at 866-586-4069 and Governor Cuomo
this week at 866-961-3208.
Tell them:
My name is —-and I live in ——-.
*I support a ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin;
*This type of drilling is putting drinking water a risk of serious
contamination;
*Use your position on the Delaware River Basin Commission
to ban fracking in this important watershed.
To learn more about fracking, go to foodandwaterwatch.org
Anointing of the Sick
On Saturday, October 22nd, Blessed Sacrament
Church (152 West 71st Street, bet. Columbus and
Broadway) will have the Sacrament of the Anointing of
the Sick at the 12 Noon Mass. All who feel the need of
God’s healing power in their lives are invited to take
part. There will be a coffee hour after the service. For
more information, call 212-877-3111.
Over 100 families are fed each week through The Franciscan
Community Center’s Food Pantry. This number is growing
because of the unemployment of so many people in our
neighborhood. It costs $30.00 to fill one bag of groceries for
each person/family.
Can you afford to contribute $30.00 to feed a family this week?
The Sandwich Line distributes over 100 sandwiches every
Tuesday and Thursday to hungry Westsiders. The cost to feed
one person a sandwich, a drink and a dessert each week is
$12.00.
Can you donate $12.00 to help fund our Sandwich Line?
If you would like to make a donation, please make your check
payable to the Franciscan Community Center and designate it
for the Food Pantry or Sandwich Line. Donations can be mailed
or dropped off at the Franciscan Community Center, 214 West
97th Street, New York, New York 10025. Donations of food are
also welcome. If you want to volunteer your time to this wonderful work please call 212-932-8040, x 39. Thank you!
