Their lecture will focus on the use of CO2 and N2O as aerosol propellants; exploring the product benefits & functionality as well as the technical constraints in product development. As liaison chemists for the alliance of Colep & One Asia, Wiktoria and Hidetoshi will demonstrate how the alliance is working to develop new aerosol technology platforms through its global supply network. Day 1 Wiktoria joined Colep in 2008 as Development Chemist, based at Colep’s Kleszczow site in Poland, following 14 years working in formulation chemistry within the aerosol industry. Wiktoria also held the position of ViceChairperson of the Polish Aerosol Federation for 4 years. Wiktoria graduated as a Master of Science in Chemical Technology at the Silesian University of Science and Technology and completed a further post-graduate diploma in Quality Systems and Waste Management. She now holds the position of Product Development Manager at Colep. Me1.3 z PEG/CO2, l’alternative aux gaz halogénés et inflammables pour aérosols / PEG/CO2, the alternative gas to halogenated and flammable gases in Aerosols Annie Schnyder Ph.D. The drawback of gases used in BOV packages is either not constant pressure (nitrogen) or the use of halogenated or flammable gases. This drawback can be circumvented by using PEG/CO2 (patent of ASM) as alternative gas in the BOV system. PEG/CO2 is neither toxic nor flammable and so is an ecological better solution. Besides foams also sprays can be obtained in a BOV system. PEG/CO2 aerosols are emptying out with constant pressure and delivery rate. Interestingly, the delivery rate is so constant, that often no metric valve is needed. With PEG/CO2 BOV Sprays 3 a very fine mist is observed even using wide pore spray nozzles. Besides also the spray pattern is very consistent. This type of BOV is recommended to be used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Annie studied chemistry at the ETH of Zürich. Her PhD was done at the ETH of Zürich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonio Togni in the field of homogeneous catalysis. After a postdoctoral study in metal organic chemistry at the university of British Columbia, she started her professional career at Novartis. After stops at Solvias, Symyx and Chemspeed Technology AG, she is now since 2 years QP and head of the development department at ASM Aerosol-Service AG. Cascade Technologies will present an overview of the leak detection challenges presented by an increasingly fragmented propellant market and will describe how 4 challenges such as multi-propellant, adaptability to changing requirements and environmental considerations will be addressed. In addition, Cascade will highlight some of the basic assumptions behind the leak rate specifications for waterbath alternative and the implications of these assumptions for leak detection of both liquefied and non-liquefied propellants. The impact of plant specific conditions on these leak detection requirements will also be explored. Paul is a Spectroscopist by background with an extensive knowledge of QCL applications in gas analysis and leak detection. His portfolio covers leak detection over a wide range of industries such as Aerosol filling, food packaging and pharmaceutical. 11:05 – 11:45 Conclusion, échanges avec les participants, visite de l’exposition / Discussions with participants, Visit of the exhibition Workshop 11:45 – 12:45 A1 z Mentions obligatoires & Allégations : comment optimiser son Design Packaging ? / Mandatory information and allegations: how to optimize the Design? Labelling is the first information consumers and competent authorities inspect, and it therefore attracts special attention in terms of mandatory information. The European cosmetics regulation 1223/2009 introduced a certain amount of mandatory information, but other European texts (aerosol generators, pre-packaging, common criteria for allegations, etc.) in addition to specific national provisions, add further constraints. Similarly, the growing desire for a single international labelling system complicates the work of designers and regulatory teams. The purpose of this conference is to present on a European level: the general mandatory information specific requirements for certain categories of product (aerosol generators, perfumes, etc.) alternative strategies and solutions to minimise the graphic impact of regulatory obligations expected regulatory developments in the future (allegations « -free », allegation « not tested on animals », labelling of allergens, etc.) a few differences between European and Canadian regulatory obligations Through concrete examples, Sylvain Martin and Marie-Paule BALLET will highlight the various obligations: Legal (code governing consumption), Regulatory (European regulations), Contractual (eco-packaging), In-house (international company policy), Professional (ARPP – French advertising self-regulatory organization). Edith BON will then take stock of measures or sanctions in the event of failure to comply with regulations (recall, withdrawal, etc.) and the risks in terms of (legal) liability. Using concrete examples, Valérie BERNARD, will illustrate the solutions, techniques and alternatives commonly used to meet these requirements, with a view to a successful design that places marketing claims in their rightful place. Marie-Paule graduated as an engineer from the ECPM and holds a doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Strasbourg. She worked at the National Research Agency as scientific project manager in fundamental research, before joining Ecomundo in 2012, where she is in charge of REACH and cosmetics regulatory project management. For the past 25 years, Valérie has been assisting companies with their packaging and colour strategies in France and abroad, particularly in Asia. After 4 years with Desgrippes agency, Valérie left for Japan, where she worked for Kosé corporation before setting up her own company, VALERIE BERNARD DESIGN, in 1991. She has since acquired considerable expertise in packaging design for prestigious cosmetics and perfume brands and intervenes in the field of colour for numerous other sectors like household appliances, stationery, food and eyewear. Edith is a lawyer at the Paris bar. She received specialised training in community and international law at the Sorbonne, in addition to European policies. She also holds a degree from Fordham University, in New York, where she lived and worked for several years. She then founded her own law firm when she returned to Paris. She deals mainly with issues linked to product safety, more specifically in the field of packaging, labelling and food contact regulations. She regularly participates in a wide range of work on these topics, particularly at the National Packaging Council, where she helps to draft reference documents on subjects like ecodesign, product traceability or packaging in the circular economy. She assists companies in these areas, both in an advisory capacity and in the event of legal disputes. Sylvain, a barrister at the Paris appeals court, mainly works in the area of packaging and food safety law. His customers include companies and professional bodies in these fields. He is a lecturer at ESIReims (École Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Emballage et Conditionnement), where he teaches about regulations on labelling, food contact, packaging waste treatment and packaging intellectual property. He wrote the chapter Law and Regulations in the book on Packaging (collection Les Référentiels published by Dunod) and writes the monthly legal column in the review, Emballages Magazine. He is involved in the work of the National Packaging Council. Me3.3 z Les tubes en aluminium chez L’Oréal : rester à la pointe de la conformité réglementaire / L’Oréal aluminium tubes: being at the cutting edge of regulatory compliance Philippe RENAULT Corporate and Europe Compatibility Director, L’Oréal, France Philippe is within L’Oréal since 24 years in the Operations field where he worked in various responsabilities in Packaging, Development, Purchasing, Quality and Production teams and previously Packaging Director for the Professional Products Division. Currently he is head of Corporate and Europe Compatibility, based in Aulnay sous Bois. The monobloc aerosol and tubes industry is in a transition from the coatings that have historically been used to protect the packaging of cosmetic and personal care products to a new generation of coatings that will perform this function now and in the future. Regulatory changes and the brand owners have demanded that REACH substances of concern and bis-Phenol A (BPA) be removed from coatings used in this market segment. This trend is likely to continue and extend to other common substances into the future. There are many challenges associated with replacing the familiar, long proven and extensively tested technologies used in the past. These challenges will be discussed in the presentation. Robyn is the global market segment manager for Monobloc Aerosol and Tubes in PPG’s Packaging Coatings business unit. She joined PPG in 1988 as a research chemist and after 15 years in coatings research and development she transitioned to a corporate marketing role for military coatings. She spent several years as a global market segment manager for Petrochemical and Offshore in the Protective and Marine Coating business unit before assuming her current position in Packaging Coatings. Ms. McMillan earned a BS in chemistry from CarnegieMellon University and a PhD in polymer science and engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Rubber is a widely known and still preferred sealing material in Aerosol valves. More and more applications require a tailor-made material, but approval procedures along the supply chain as well as increasing number of restricting directives are slowing down individual R&D processes. Jens has studied mechanical engineering and material science from 1989 to 1995. Since then he has been working in the rubber industry, as well in R&D, sales and as a plant director. Since 2012 Jens is consulting Chengtian Rubber from China, today’s leading manufacturer of external gaskets for Aerosol valves. Me3.6 z BOV, performance chimique et mécanique : comment gérer les questions de compatibilité / BOV, chemical and mechanical performance: how do they cope with compatibility issues? We have the opportunity to meet existing and new packaging suppliers on a convivial way. I will take part again next year, this is perfect! This is a great opportunity to receive an Award; we appreciate very much the decision of the jury. The Awarded product is a medical device for the treatment of chronic wounds, when the oxygen is missing. Our product contains hemoglobin which takes the oxygen from the air, to the background. This is very good to be chosen here for this Award. In the aerosol market the use of pure propellant is of great importance. Especially in cosmetic and household aerosol products the odour quality of the used propellant has a high impact. Because of their typical properties and wide pressure range, butane and propane gasses are successfully applied as propellant and solvent for aerosol products. Typically, these gases originate from crude oil and are produced by refineries worldwide. However, limited refineries are capable to produce the required quality for use as aerosol propellant. In the Q8Oils presentation, the quality requirements and production of butane/propane gas mixtures for the aerosol market will be discussed. André studied chemistry at the Nijmegen University in The Netherlands and at the Bowling Green State University in the USA. At the Nijmegen University, he also received his Ph.D. degree in the field of Organic Chemistry. After his academic experiences, André continued his career at the R&D centre of General Electric Plastics and in 2010 he changed to the Q8 research facility in Europoort, Rotterdam. In 2012 he switched to the Q8Oils commercial and marketing division into his current role as Product Line Manager for the specialties. Packaging is a source of exposure for the consumer as packaging molecules may migrate, leading to potential product contamination. New notions of responsibility are now included in the cosmetic regulations effective since 11th July 2013: the cosmetic Brand is legally responsible for the products they market. However, cosmetic Brand companies don’t have a full knowledge of the actual materials used in the packaging process. This led, in February 2011, to the constitution of a working group “Cosmetology and Plastics’” championed by two professional organisations Allizé-Plasturgie and the European Centre of Dermo-cosmetology”. This lecture will describe progres made by the working group in terms of the knowledge to be acquired by each of the actors all along the production chain to enable the correct flow of information from the packaging materials’ supplier to the cosmetic Brand, good practices to adopt in order to reduce critical risk factors associated with packaging and the tests undertaken and on-going research and development designed to better control the container-content interaction in cosmetic packaging Prior to the conference conclusion, we will discuss plans to open the working group to other potential members in order to share knowledge and means of action and thus better defend the viewpoint of industrialists and scientists towards the authorities. Dominique is a graduate from the Paris Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers. She started her carrier in the industry in the Research and Development services in plasturgy first in the electric and electronic, and later in the automotive sectors. She undertook a series of independent consultancies in plasturgy before joining the professional organisation Allizé-Plasturgie in 2005. Circular economy is a rather new “concept” appeared since 2010 which fits perfectly into a “sustainable future” for human being: Minimizing waste, energy and consumption of raw material, specifically those which are not renewable, designing product which length of life is much longer than today…. PackSys Global’s new Twin Decorator is an intelligent, robust and easy to operate system that reduces print changeover times to as little as 5 minutes. This significantly reduces downtime and increases efficiency by allowing an increased output of between 25-80% depending on the line speed, batch sizes and currently required print changeover times. This revolutionary system for monobloc aerosol cans and aluminum tubes uses a second printer, complete with drying oven, connecting the whole system in an intelligent way such that the rest of the line should not need to stop anymore for a print change. Besides the additional decorator, the patented system comprises automatic transfers and bypass systems. These allow a new print job to be set up independently from the actual running batch. The Twin Decorator allows manufacturers to match the output of new, higher speed lines due to the higher efficiency rates which are the result of largely eliminating print changeover times. Roman studied machine engineering at Fachhochschule Zurich Abendtechnikum focusing on Hydraulic machines (water power plants) and Process Engineering (Columns). After graduating, he then studied economics (Wirtschaftsingenieur FH) at Fachhochschule in Zurich.
