“Software Development with Open Source Spillovers in an Asymmetric Duopoly”
Résumé. How does the choice to invest in OSS (Open Source Software) of the firm depend upon its market
position relative to that of its rival? In this paper, we study at how the innovation under OSS regime, i.e. in the
presence of open source spillovers is affected by the asymmetry of firms. We focus on effects driven purely by
the strategic interactions of firms, and thus do not allow for an aggregate demand effects. Then, we examine the
welfare impact of OSS. The main findings are: (i) when the level of asymmetry is sufficiently low, firms underinvest in the quality of their software under OSS regime, (ii) when the level of asymmetry is sufficiently high,
the large firm (resp. the small firm) under-invest (resp. over-invests) under OSS regime; (iii) when both firms are
relatively symmetric, their profits increase under OSS regime and their decisions in terms of OSS are strategic
complements (iv) when both firms are relatively asymmetric, the profit of the large firm (resp. the small firm)
decreases (resp. increases) under OSS regime and their decisions in terms of OSS are strategic substitutes ; (v)
Welfare increases with OSS only if both firms are sufficiently symmetric.

“Competition against Open Source Community in Presence of Forking: Implications of Open Source
Policy” (en collaboration avec E. BARANES)
Abstract. In this paper we study the competition in mixed duopoly in which a proprietary software firm
competes against a community of voluntary developers of OS software both in the labor market of programmers
and in the product market. Our analysis is based on a two-stage-game, where at the first stage the two entities are
engaged in the development of their own software. Development activity is carried out by skilled programmers
recruited on a perfectly competitive labor market. The firm pays the same wage to the programmers while the
OS community offers them the opportunity to signal their ability, which leads to no pecuniary income. At the
second stage, the firm and the OS community distribute their software on the product market. The firm sets the
price of its software and the OS community offers its software for free on the Internet. Users evaluate both
products and decide to buy the proprietary software or to download the free OS software. The central
assumptions are that users and programmers are heterogeneous, and the OS community suffers from forking in
software developing. We first describe how the proprietary firm reacts to the competition of the OS community
under conditions of users and programmers heterogeneity. Then, we analyze the welfare implications of the
public policy supporting OS community.

“Public Policy towards Open Source Software in a Mixed Duopoly with Heterogeneous Users”
Abstract. This paper analyses the open source policy in the form of a subsidy/tax on users based on the quality
levels of software products. More specifically, we consider users and total welfare effects of subsidizing users
who adopt high quality product such as open source software. Focusing on the users skills, we study this issue in
the cases of compatibility and incompatibility of software products with a vertically mixed duopoly. In the case
of compatibility, an open source subsidy improves the surplus of users and is socially optimal. However, in the
case of incompatibility, the optimal open source policy depends on the level of implementation cost of the open
source software. That is, if the implementation cost of the open source software is sufficiently high (low), an
open source subsidy (tax) is optimal in point of view of users (total welfare).
