Wien hat als ehemalige Kaiserresidenz Hochkarätiges
vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart zu bieten: vom
gotischen Stephansdom über die barocken Schlösser
und Palais der Kaiser bis hin zum Prachtboulevard
Ringstraße mit Staatsoper, Burgtheater, Votivkirche,
Rathaus und Parlament sowie dem Kunst- und Naturhistorischen Museum. Kaiserlich lustwandeln lässt es
sich auch in der Hofburg und im Schloss Schönbrunn,
wo einst die Kaiserfamilie residierte. Tiergarten und
Park der Sommerresidenz erstrahlen in barocker Pracht
und die Hofburg bietet neben den Kaiserappartements
über zwei Dutzend Sammlungen, die der Sammelleidenschaft der Habsburger-Dynastie zu verdanken sind.
Einzigartiges wie die Secession mit ihrer goldenen
Lorbeerblatt-Kuppel brachte auch der Wiener Jugendstil
hervor. Zeitgenössische Architektur findet sich nicht
nur im Haas-Haus, in dessen Glasfassade sich der Stephansdom spiegelt, sondern auch in den Gasometern,
ehemalige Gasbehälter, die für Wohn- und Geschäftszwecke umgebaut wurden. Diese Mischung aus Alt
und Neu, Tradition und Modernität verleiht Wien das
besondere Flair.

Top attractions include the Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the magnificent Ring Boulevard with the State

also brought forth unique places of interest such as the
Secession with its gilded leaf cupola. Contemporary architecture is to be found in the shape of the Haas-Haus,
whose glass front reflects St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and
the Gasometers, former gas storage facilities which
have been converted into a residential and commercial
complex. This mix of old and new, tradition and modernity, is what gives Vienna its extra special flair.

Die vergoldete Jugendstil-Kunstuhr, 1911 vom
Maler und Bildhauer Franz von Matsch gestaltet,
lässt täglich um 12 Uhr Mittag zwölf Figuren aus
der Geschichte Wiens zu Musik paradieren. Im
Advent erklingen täglich Weihnachtslieder um 17
und 18 Uhr.

Als älteste und eine der bedeutendsten Sprechbühnen des deutschen Sprachraums gilt das Burgtheater. Hier werden Klassiker wie Gegenwartsautoren auf die Bühne gebracht. Das Gebäude wurde

Stiegenhaus von den Brüdern Ernst und Gustav
Klimt gestaltet.

This gilded masterpiece of art nouveau was created in 1911 by the painter and sculptor Franz von
Matsch. Every day at noon, twelve historical Viennese figures parade across the clock to musical
accompaniment. Christmas carols can be heard at
17:00 and 18:00 during Advent.

The Burgtheater is considered the oldest and also
one of the most influential theaters when it comes
to dramatic arts in the German-speaking world. It
stages classics as well as works by contemporary
authors. The building was designed by Gottfried

Bis 1918 war die Hofburg Residenz der Habsburger-Kaiser. Vom 13. Jahrhundert bis kurz vor
Ende der Monarchie wurde das Areal zur heutigen
Größe und in seiner imperialen Pracht ausgestattet. Mehr als zwei Dutzend Sammlungen von
Weltformat bilden heute den größten imperialen
Kulturkomplex Europas. Außerdem in der Hofburg:
ein bedeutendes Kongresszentrum in den prunkvollen, historischen Festsälen sowie die Auftrittsorte der Wiener Sängerknaben und der Lipizzaner
der Spanischen Hofreitschule. Cafés, Restaurants
und Parks laden zum Verweilen ein.
Heute befindet sich in der Hofburg auch der Amtssitz des Bundespräsidenten.
Until 1918 the Hofburg served as the residence of
the Habsburg royals. Between the 13th century and
shortly before the end of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire the complex grew to its present size and
splendor. Today it is the largest imperial cultural
facility in Europe with over two dozen collections
of world standing, as well as a major congress
center in the magnificent historic state rooms, and
performance venues for the Vienna Boys’ Choir
and the Lipizzaners of the Spanish Riding School.
Cafés, restaurants and parks afford opportunities
to relax.
Today, the Hofburg also houses the offices of the
Austrian Federal President.
Vier über 100 Jahre alte, ehemalige Gasbehälter
aus Backstein wurden von den Stararchitekten
Coop Himmelb(l)au, Jean Nouvel, Wilhelm
Holzbauer und Manfred Wehdorn in einen neuen
Stadtteil verwandelt. Die 75 Meter hohen Bauten
bieten nun 615 Wohnungen, ein Studentenheim,
eine Veranstaltungshalle und eine Shoppingmall.
Die Wohnetagen der Gasometer können nicht von
innen besichtigt werden.

Star architects Coop Himmelb(l)au, Jean Nouvel,

transformed four former century-old gas storage facilities into a new city quarter. Towering
75 meters high, the brick edifices now house 615
apartments, a student hostel, an event hall and a
shopping mall.

Around 1900, teams of Austrian archeologists
excavated superb works of classical antiquity at
Ephesus in Asia Minor (nowadays part of Turkey).
The sultan gave some samples to the Austrian
emperor as a token of his gratitude. They can be
admired here at the Ephesus Museum.

die berühmten Portraits und die Totenmaske der
1898 ermordeten Kaiserin.
Einen Einblick in den kaiserlichen Haushalt,
das höfische Zeremoniell und die Tafelkultur am
Wiener Hof gibt die Silberkammer mit hunderten
Porzellantellern, Kristallgläsern, Silberplatten,
Backformen, goldenem Prunkgeschirr und Sanitärporzellan. Prunkstück des Museums ist der 30
m lange „Mailänder Tafelaufsatz“ aus vergoldeter

The Imperial Apartments grant insight into the
magnificent state and private premises of the
imperial family. Accessible to the public are the
great audience hall, the conference room in which
the council of ministers and the crown council convened, the rooms used by imperial staff officers,
the private rooms of Emperor Franz Josef I and his
legendary Sisi, Empress Elisabeth, the Alexander
apartments, and the dining room of the imperial
family.
The Sisi Museum brings to life the myths and
realities surrounding Empress Elisabeth. Its main
focus is on the private life of the young empress:
her carefree time as a young girl in Bavaria, her
official role as Empress of Austria, her rebellion
against court life, her obsession with beauty and
slenderness, her tremendous sporting achievements, and her impassioned poetry.
Highlights on show include shoes Sisi wore as a
child, the dress she wore on the eve of her wedding, her first aid kit with cocaine syringe, famous
portraits, and a death mask of the empress after
her assassination in 1898.
The Silver Collection grants insight into the housekeeping traditions and culinary & table culture
of the imperial court, with hundreds of china
plates, crystal glasses, silver trays, baking pans,
golden state tableware and sanitary chinaware.
The museum’s showpiece is the 30 meter “Milan
centerpiece” made of gilded bronze.

Kaisergruft in der Kapuzinerkirche
Tipp
In der Kaisergruft befinden sich 146 Särge mit
Angehörigen des Hauses Habsburg, darunter
12 Kaiser und 19 Kaiserinnen und Königinnen.
Prunkstück ist der Doppelsarg für Maria Theresia
und ihren Gemahl, Kaiser Franz I. Stephan von

Friars
The Imperial Burial Vault contains 146 caskets with
the remains of members of the House of Habsburg
including 12 emperors and 19 empresses and
queens. The showpiece is the double casket of

Die Kirche auf der „Donauplatte“ aus dem Jahr
2000 stammt von Heinz Tesar: ein Kreuzquader
als Grundform mit einer Außenhülle aus schwarz
glänzenden Chromstahlplatten. Faszinierende
Lichteffekte im Inneren entstehen durch zahlreiche kreisrunde Fensteröffnungen.

Karlskirche
Tipp
Die bedeutendste Barockkirche Wiens wurde 1716
bis 1722 von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach
begonnen und 1723 bis 1739 von seinem Sohn
Joseph Emanuel vollendet. Die mächtige Kuppel
der Kirche (72 m hoch) gehört zu den markantesten Elementen des Wiener Stadtbildes.
Noch während der Restauration der Kuppelfresken lohnt sich die Fahrt mit dem Panoramalift in
luftige Höhen.

Vienna’s most significant example of ecclesiastical baroque architecture was started by Johann
Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in 1716 to 1722 and
completed by his son Joseph Emanuel between
1723 and 1739. The mighty dome of the church, 72
m high, is one of the most prominent features of
Vienna’s skyline. During the current restoration of
the dome frescoes, going up the panoramic elevator is particularly worthwhile.

Der Bau der Pfarr- und Ordenskirche Maria Treu
wurde 1771 fertig gestellt. Besonders bemerkenswert sind die Deckenfresken von Franz Anton
Maulbertsch und die Schleifladenorgel, auf der

Die von Otto Wagner 1904 bis 1907 erbaute Kirche
auf dem Gelände des Psychiatrischen Krankenhauses der Stadt Wien ist ein Hauptwerk des Wiener Jugendstils. Die goldene Kuppel ist weithin zu
sehen, da sich die Kirche auf dem höchsten Punkt
des Areals befindet. Die Glasmosaiken stammen
von Koloman Moser.

Built by Otto Wagner in 1904 – 1907, this church
on the grounds of the Psychiatric Hospital of
the City of Vienna is a key work of Viennese art
nouveau. The gold-covered dome is visible from

Der Stephansdom, das Wahrzeichen Wiens und
Österreichs bedeutendstes gotisches Bauwerk,
wurde zwischen dem 14. und 16. Jahrhundert im
Stil der Gotik erbaut. Der älteste Teil des Domes
ist das spätromanische Westwerk aus dem 13.
Jahrhundert mit Riesentor (Haupteingang) und
Heidentürmen sowie der Empore im Inneren. Im
Nordturm führt ein Schnellaufzug zur Aussichtsplattform und zur Pummerin, der größten Glocke
Österreichs.
Im Südturm erreicht man über 343 Stufen auf
einer engen Wendeltreppe die Türmerstube in
72 m Höhe Die Katakomben, einst unterirdische
Begräbnisstätten, beherbergen u.a. die Bischofsgruft sowie die Urnen mit den Eingeweiden von
Mitgliedern des Hauses Habsburg.
Im Stephansdom befinden sich auch eine Reihe
von Kunstschätzen, die teilweise nur im Rahmen
einer Führung zu besichtigen sind, darunter das
Grabmal Kaiser Friedrichs III. aus rotem Marmor;
die um 1500 geschaffene Kanzel, von der früher
die Priester predigten, und der “Wiener Neustädter Altar”, ein gotischer Flügelaltar aus dem Jahr
1447.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s no. 1 landmark
and Austria’s most eminent Gothic edifice, was
constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries.
The oldest part of the cathedral is the late Romanesque west façade from the original 13th century
church, with the great portal (the main entrance)
and “Towers of the Heathens”, and the gallery inside. An express elevator in the North Tower takes
visitors to a viewing platform and the Pummerin,
Austria’s largest bell.
In the South Tower a narrow spiral staircase with
343 steps leads up to the watchman’s room 72
meters up. The catacombs, once an underground
burial site, house the bishops’ crypt as well as the
urns containing the entrails of members of the
House of Habsburg.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral also has a number of art
treasures, several of which can only be seen on a
guided tour. They include the red marble tomb of
Emperor Friedrich III, a pulpit constructed around
1500 where priests used to deliver their sermons,
and the Wiener Neustadt Altarpiece, a winged
Gothic altar dating from 1447.

Theophil Hansen constructed the Parliament
building on the Ring Boulevard from 1873 to 1883
in the style of the Greek Revival. Until 1918 the
elected representatives serving in the Council
of the Empire met here in legislative session for
the Austrian half of the dual Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy, which extended from Galicia all the
way to Dalmatia. Today this is the seat of both the
National and the Federal Council.

A ride in the Giant Ferris Wheel, one of Vienna’s

Built in 1713, the baroque Schönbrunn Palace
served as the summer residence of the Habsburgs.
Emperor Franz Joseph (reigned 1848 – 1916) was
born here in 1830 and spent the last years of his
life entirely at Schönbrunn. The palace, park and
zoological gardens were inscribed on the UNESCO
World Heritage List as a cultural property in
1996 and are among Vienna’s top visitor attractions. Forty out of a total of 1,141 lavish rooms in
the palace are open to visitors. A special gem is

Der Kronprinzengarten, 1870 für Kronprinz Rudolf
vor seinen Appartements im Erdgeschoß angelegt,

Tiergarten
Tipp
Der älteste und zugleich modernste Zoo der Welt
entstand 1752 als repräsentative Barock-Menagerie. Heute sind die Gehege der natürlichen Umwelt
der Tiere gut angepasst. Stars des Tiergartens sind
vor allem der kleine Elefant Mongu, die Tigerbabies sowie das chinesische Pandabärenpaar. Kern
des Tiergartens ist der sogenannte Frühstückspavillon des Kaisers (1759), der heute als Café-Restaurant jeden Besucher zum Verweilen einlädt.

The Privy Garden was laid out for Crown Prince
Rudolf in front of his ground floor apartments in
1870. It has four parterre areas bordered by an
arbor. Pavilions serve as viewing terraces from

Zoological Gardens
Tip
The world’s oldest and at the same time most
modern zoo was established in 1752 as a prestigious baroque menagerie. Today the enclosures
are excellent replicas of the animals’ natural
habitats. Stars of the zoo include the tiny elephant
Mongu, the tiger babies and a pair of Chinese
panda bears. The focal point of the zoo is the socalled Imperial Breakfast Pavilion (1759), which
has been transformed into a café-restaurant for
visitors.

60 historische Wagen, Schlitten, Sänften und
Tragsessel aus der Zeit von 1690 bis 1917 sind hier

Sammlung ist der 4 t schwere, vergoldete und
reich geschmückte Imperialwagen, der bei Kaiserkrönungen von acht Pferden gezogen wurde.

Staatsopernmuseum
Die Staatsoper zählt zu den bedeutendsten
Opernhäusern der Welt. An 300 Spieltagen
von September bis Juni werden rund 50 Opern,
zahlreiche Ballettwerke und Premieren geboten.
Der prachtvolle Bau an der Ringstraße wurde von
1861 bis 1869 nach Plänen von August Siccard
von Siccardsburg und Eduard van der Nüll als k.k.
Hofoperntheater errichtet.
Im Staatsopernmuseum finden Opernfans die letzten 50 Jahre Bühnengeschichte veranschaulicht.
Fotos, Kostüme und Bühnenbildmodelle sowie
die Besetzungen der einzelnen Rollen werden hier
dokumentiert.

This museum contains 60 historical coaches, carriages, sleighs and sedan chairs dating from 1690
to 1917. They are joined by ceremonial harnesses,
riding outfits, saddlecloths, paintings of horses,
and coachmen’s liveries. The centerpiece of the
collection is the gilded and lavishly decorated
4-ton Imperial Coach, which was drawn by eight
horses in coronation parades.

State Opera Museum
The Vienna State Opera is one of the world’s most
prestigious opera houses. With performances on
300 days between September and June, it stages
some 50 operas, numerous ballets and frequent
premieres. The magnificent edifice on the Ring
Boulevard was constructed as royal-imperial Court
Opera Theater between 1861 and 1869 according
to plans by August Siccard von Siccardsburg and
Eduard van der Nüll.
The State Opera Museum is an eldorado for opera
fans, reviewing the last 50 years of stage history.
Photographs, costumes and stage set models are
joined by documentation recording how individual
roles were cast.

I. 1882 bis 1886 für seine Sisi erbauen. Das

und Wildschweine frei leben. Heute werden hier
Sonderausstellungen des Wien Museums gezeigt.

Zahlreiche Ehrengräber der berühmtesten Komponisten wie Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Strauß,
Schönberg und Stolz befinden sich auf dem 2 km2
großen Zentralfriedhof. Auch Dichter, Maler und
Bildhauer, bekannte Ärzte und Politiker sind hier
ehrenvoll bestattet.
Der multikonfessionelle Friedhof stellt eine einzigartige Parklandschaft dar. Die Friedhofskirche ist
ein monumentaler Jugendstilbau von Max Hegele.

Emperor Franz Joseph I had the Hermes Villa built
for his Sisi (Empress Elisabeth) from 1882 through
1886 and it became her favorite haunt. It lies in
Lainz Game Preserve, in a 25 km² park where deer,
mouflons and wild pigs also roam. Today the villa
mounts special exhibitions of the Wien Museum.

Numerous tombs of honor of famous composers
such as Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss,
Schoenberg and Stolz can be found at the 2 km2
Central Cemetery. Poets, painters, sculptors,
eminent physicians and politicians have also been
honorably laid to rest here.
This multi-confessional cemetery is a unique park
landscape. The cemetery church is a monumental
art nouveau (Jugendstil) edifice by Max Hegele.
All tombs of honor and a location map can be
found in the Central Cemetery guide (available
in German only), costing € 10. The author of this
publication conducts guided tours by prior arrangement.
