The recently refurbished Löwengrube inn, dating back to 1543,
contains Bolzano’s oldest ‘Stube’
and in its cellars lie over 1200 different wines, above all from South
Tyrol and Italy, but also from all over
the rest of the wine world. The inn
offers traditional local and Mediterranean light dishes in a minimalist
interior flanked by ancient walls.

Situated in the Zollstange or Dodiciville square, a
stone’s throw from the town centre, the inn woke up
again in June after several years of hibernation, blending tradition with modernity. Innkeeper Helmuth Geier
has engaged an up-and-coming young chef, Michael
Meister, and sources his ingredients locally. Not to be
missed is his ‘Zwiebelrostbraten’, or beef tenderloin
onion roast.
The Löwengrube also aspires to be one of the
best wine-bars in northern Italy and Helmuth Geier is
justly proud of the reasonable prices of also his top
wines. All his bottles cost just 10 Euros more
at the table.
