t was the summer of 1988. The USSR had just lost
against Holland in the European Championship,
and our family decided to travel to the southern
Peloponnese for six weeks. The route was still
laborious back then; you had to travel by car to
Ancona in Italy, then take a ferry across to Patras.
Today, life is decidedly simpler: you can fly straight
there with Lauda Air, landing in the ancient city of
Pharai after just over two hours.
Not a great deal else has changed since then,
however. To this day, the overwhelming impressions
you take from the town of Messenia in the Peloponnese are of an authentic landscape and the remarkable hospitality of the Greeks themselves. The south
is where the famous Kalamata olives are harvested
with stoic calm and a certain pride every year, and
you are completely cut off here from the economic
uncertainty that has made so many headlines.
No, local people have more important issues to
discuss, such as which meals and drinks their guest
from Austria should be served. Eventually, the table
is covered with regional delicacies ranging from
grilled vegetables to fish, cheese and meat. The high

werden sollen. Der Tisch ist zur Gänze bedeckt
mit regionalen Köstlichkeiten, mit gegrilltem
Gemüse über Fisch und Käse bis zu Fleisch.
Der Höhepunkt sind jedoch die Kartoffel­
scheiben, welche noch am Vormittag von der
Oma des Gastgebers in der Küche geschnitten
wurden. Nur ein Glas Tsipouri kann diesen
Genuss noch toppen. Ein Verdauungs­
schläfchen später verlasse ich meine Familien­
pension im Stadtkern, um mich Richtung
Meer aufzumachen. Dort möchte ich den Tag
am unendlich langen Sandstrand ausklingen
lassen, während ich dem magischen Sonnen­
untergang beiwohne.
Es ist wie vor 24 Jahren, nur dass es
heute die UdSSR nicht mehr gibt. Die grie­
chische Gastfreundschaft aber besteht noch
immer und Griechenland hat trotz aller
Zweifler auch den Europameistertitel nach
Hause geholt.

s war der Sommer 1988. Die UdSSR verlor
gegen die Niederlande in der Europameis­
terschaft und unsere Familie machte sich für
sechs Wochen auf, um auf die Südpeloponnes
zu reisen. Damals war der Weg noch mühsam,
mit dem Auto und der Fähre über Ancona und
Patras. Heute landen wir mit einem Direktflug
der Lauda Air nach etwas mehr als zwei
Stunden erholt im antiken Pharai.
Viel hat sich seitdem nicht verändert.
Noch immer überwältigt Messenien auf der
Peloponnes dank authentischer Landschaft
und gastfreundlicher Griechen. Die Ernte der
bekannten Kalamataoliven wird mit stoischer
Ruhe und einem gewissen Stolz vollzogen.
Die aktuelle wirtschaftliche Situation scheint
hier im Süden gänzlich ausgeblendet.
Vielmehr beschäftigt man sich mit den
essenziellen Fragen, welche Speisen und
Getränke dem Gast aus Österreich kredenzt

point, however, are the potato slices cut by the host’s
grandmother in the kitchen that very morning. A
glass of tsipouro makes the pleasure complete. After
my after-dinner nap, I leave my family-run bed and
breakfast in the centre of town to head for the beach,
where I finish off the day walking the endless sands,
watching the magical sunset.
It could easily be 24 years ago, indeed, except that
the USSR is no longer around. Local hospitality is
still very much alive, however. Indeed, it’s one area in
which Greece, despite doubts over the numbers, could
walk away with the European championship. *
