all, whether as individuals, as businesses
or as a society. Purely short-term thinking
and the squandering of natural
resources are being questioned. Events
such as the financial and economic crisis
or environmental catastrophes, and
circumstances such as scarcity of natural
resources or political upheavals have all
sparked off far-reaching changes in the
world economy. At this juncture, more
women are assuming responsibility and
power.

concluded “For a municipality or a city, as I
myself represent, I believe that can be
translated into: Be clear about what you
want to achieve and then invite lots of
other stake-holders in to come up with the
solutions how to arrive there. Because the
challenges cities are facing in the future
cannot be solved by politicians only, we
need cross-sectoral Collaborations. We
need to exchange ideas and experiences
with other cities: to learn from each other’s
good solutions and to avoid making the
same mistakes over and over again –and
last but not least: we need to inspire one
another!!

Nachhaltigkeit – Woher dieser Begriff kommt
• Die Ursprünge des Nachhaltigkeitskonzepts
werden auf den sächsischen Oberberghauptmann
Hans Carl von Carlowitz zurückgeführt. In seinem
Werk „Sylvicultura oeconomica“ prägte er den
Begriff 1713 angesichts extremer Holzknappheit
infolge von Misswirtschaft. Nachhaltige
Forstwirtschaft bedeutete für Carlowitz
sinngemäß, dass nur so viel Holz geschlagen
werden darf, wie wieder nachwachsen kann.

Nachhaltigkeit und der Brundtland Report
• Die World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED),
auch bekannt als Brundtland-Kommission, erarbeitete 1987 unter
der Leitung der damaligen norwegischen Ministerpräsidentin Gro
Harlem Brundtland ihren Bericht „Our Common Future―. Der
Abschlussbericht der Kommission stellte ein Konzept dar, welches
zum Leitbild einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung avancierte. Demnach
ist das Leitbild der Nachhaltigkeit definiert als :
„Eine Entwicklung, die den Bedürfnissen der heutigen
Generation entspricht, ohne die Möglichkeiten künftiger
Generationen zu gefährden, ihre eigenen Bedürfnisse zu
befriedigen.

übernehmen mehr Frauen die
Verantwortung und Macht. Die Konferenz
bot eine hochkarätige Plattform für den
internationalen Dialog sowie für Impulse
und neue Kontakte.
