providing an enriching cinematic experience through the delivery of diverse and innovative programming that educates, inspires and empowers children and youth.
Mission Statement: Freeze Frame provides educational opportunities for
children and youth to explore the art of filmmaking through screenings of international film and
video and hands-on workshops in a multilingual environment.

En offrant une programmation aussi diversifiée qu’innovatrice, qui a pour but
d’éduquer, d’inspirer et de développer le sens de l’initiative des enfants et des jeunes, Freeze Frame
aspire à devenir un leader dans la production d’expériences cinématographiques enrichissantes.
Mission :
Freeze Frame organise des événements éducatifs en plusieurs langues pour les
enfants et les jeunes, qui leur permettent d’explorer l’art du cinéma à travers la projection de films et
de vidéos et à travers des ateliers pratiques.

President of the Board
On behalf of the staff and board of Freeze
Frame, I am pleased to welcome everyone
to the annual International Film Festival
for Kids of All Ages. In this, its thirteenth
year, Freeze Frame is celebrating
becoming a teenager.
Co-founder and long-time Director, Nicole
Matiation has moved on to a government
position, allowing her to influence the
continued development of culture in
Manitoba. We welcome back filmmaker
and co-founder Pascal Boutroy to help in
our transition and growth.
African director Cheik Doukouré’s Le
Ballon d’or was an audience favourite
at Freeze Frame’s very first festival. He
returns this year in person to present his
inspiring and moving film to a whole new
audience of children and their families.
It is very fitting that this film returns to
Freeze Frame during a year of transition
and renewal.
As its audience and programming
continue to develop and grow, Freeze
Frame remains dedicated to meeting
the challenges and demands
involved with this exciting
and substantial growth, and
continues to bring Manitoba’s
youth high quality films that
provide a window on the rest of
the world.

Au nom du personnel et du conseil
d’administration de Freeze Frame, je suis
heureuse d’accueillir tout le monde à la
treizième édition du Festival international
de films pour enfants de tous âges. Treize
ans ! Déjà l’adolescence !
Nicole Matiation, la co-fondatrice et
directrice de Freeze Frame a décidé
de quitter le Festival pour un poste de
consultante en industries culturelles
avec e gouvernement du Manitoba. Un
poste qui lui permettra de continuer
à contribuer à la vie culturelle de la

Un autre retour cette
année est celui du Ballon
d’or, un film qui a été un des grand
succès du premier Freeze Frame, il y
a 13 ans. Et cette fois-ci, ce film vient
accompagné de son réalisateur : Cheik
Doukouré. Ce retour permettra à une
toute nouvelle génération de jeunes de
découvrir ce film.
Renouveau et continuité sont donc les
maîtres mots de Freeze Frame cette
année. La vision qui nous inspire reste
toujours la-même : offrir aux jeunes
du Manitoba une fenêtre ouverte sur le
monde grâce aux meilleurs films pour
enfants.

On dit que les gens vont d’avantage au
cinéma en temps de récession parce qu’ils
veulent oublier leurs soucis ! Cette année,
alors que la récession bat son plein, Freeze
Frame propose une bonne raison de voir
des films pour enfants : apprendre à
faire face à l’adversité. Car les films pour
enfants sont pleins de situations difficiles
que les jeunes doivent surmonter.

In times of economic crisis, movie
attendance tends to rise as people
try to forget their worries. This
year, with a recession on the horizon,
Freeze Frame presents films that will
make audiences forget their worries and
offer a lesson in facing adversity. The
heroes and heroines in the films featured
at Freeze Frame this year have many
different kinds of obstacles to overcome
or problems to solve. How will the young
man in Crusade: A March Through
Time reverse his dramatic mistake? How
will the little girl in Les Trois Brigands
manage to tame her kidnappers? How
will Bandian (The Golden Ball)
achieve his dreams? Will the young boy
in Behind the Clouds be successful

Sparking a passion for cinema
in young people is a mission we
share at the National Film Board of
Canada – and so we’re delighted
to be partnering with Freeze Frame
and presenting the NFB Youth Jury
Award for Best Animated Short.
Festivals are a great way for us all to experience cinema. But
as the NFB marks its 70th anniversary, we’ve also created an
entirely new way to watch and share great NFB films online:
our new national Screening Room at <NFB.ca>.
With over 700 NFB films, excerpts and trailers – and more
titles added each month – the Screening Room will allow
young and old alike to connect with their country’s rich
cinematic heritage.

The Youth Jury provides young people between the ages of 9 and
14 with the opportunity to see all the films at the Freeze Frame Film
Festival and award the Youth Jury Prize for Best Feature Film and the
National Film Board Youth Jury Prize for Best Animated Short.
Members of the Youth Jury will take a workshop with Actionmédias on film criticism, meet our guest artists and benefit from
informal training provided by Freeze Frame staff.

Throughout the year, Freeze Frame staff pay close attention to the
great films for young audiences being produced all over the world.
Winnipeggers are then given a very special opportunity to watch a
selection at our festival. You’ll see award winning features and shorts
made in other languages with different perspectives and common
themes from countries across the globe. You won’t find these films at
your local multiplex or video rental store.
YIKES! Subtitles!
No problem. Freeze Frame provides live narration for subtitled
feature films for kids ten years and under. So just sit back. Relax.

We’ve got them! Workshops take place almost every day of the
festival. For the complete line-up, check out page 23.
WORKSHOPS COST:

$12 for four-hour workshops
Space is limited. We keep the workshops small so that everyone
can be involved. Last minute enrollment is possible but we strongly
recommend registering in advance. These workshops are delivered

If Bandian could, he would spend all his time doing one thing-playing soccer. Known as “Makono Turbo” in his village, it will take
more than speed for him to overcome the many obstacles that
stand in the way of his dream to play professional soccer. Through
Bandian’s commitment to his goal, this film offers a strong message
of hope and resilience, along with the opportunity to explore life
in an African country. An audience favorite at the first Freeze Frame
International Film Festival in 1997, the director is expected to

Twelve-year-old Paulo lives in Lisbon with his mother, and one

Young Sirimal loves the simple pleasures of his country

and her alter-ego Rooz. Whatever she tries, her problems seem

This English language adaptation of Thea Beckman’s acclaimed
Dutch novel offers an action-packed, yet thoughtful coming of age
tale. Fifteen-year-old Dolf travels back in time to the thirteenth
century where he meets Jenne, a young woman his age, who has
joined the Holy Crusade of ten thousand children being marched to
Jerusalem by an evangelical prince. Together, Jenne and Dolf help
the children to overcome exhaustion, hunger, and disease and to
battle against robber knights. While Dolf’s modern ideas are seen as
unusual, leading people to mistrust him, his good deeds earn the
respect of many more. Focusing on the importance of teamwork,
taking responsibility for one’s choices and standing up to help those
in trouble, the film blends the modern and the medieval into an

drift across southern Manitoba, looking for work. As their destiny

student production, the team at Argyle School delivers a powerful

undercarriage of a plane. Every year, millions of young Africans risk
their lives to leave behind a conflict- and poverty-ridden continent.
Shocked by this, the director returns
to Dakar, where he grew up. As he
follows five young men determined
to immigrate to the West at any
cost, he unearths the impotence of
individuals faced with international
indifference and the lack of interest
of leaders in a society emptied of
resources and incapable of meeting
its own needs. A challenging film that makes the case for a global
ecology in which no nation or people is abandoned.

Animate Yourself
Make a Film in a Day
This workshop gives students the chance to be a character in their
own animation project. An animator will lead students through
the process of pixillation animation using their own bodies and
cardboard cut-outs on a three-dimensional farmyard set.
This popular intensive allows students to learn hands-on the entire
film production cycle in just one day, and in the process produce a
short video work of fiction. The students can choose to use scripts
written by professional screenwriters (Rebecca Gibson, Jordan
Wheeler, Pascal Boutroy) for Freeze Frame thanks to a grant from
Investors Group.
Make up for Movies!
This popular workshop introduces students to some basic
make-up techniques as well as some stunning transformations. A
professional make-up artist will provide the materials and expertise
for this exciting workshop.
Acting for the Camera
Students acting up? Direct their energies to this dynamic workshop
that has students experimenting with their presentation skills in
front of a camera.

with plasticine or other materials, using stop motion animation.

Journalism Workshop at Freeze Frame 2009
Freeze Frame and Actions-Médias are partnering to give aspiring
young journalists the opportunity to cover Freeze Frame 2009
by writing for Cinéfile, interviewing guests and participants, and
providing radio coverage on Envol, the French community radio
station. The journalism students will act as mentors for other youth
participating in a journalism workshop during the Festival. These
activities will be offered in French in 2009. High school students
interested in covering the Festival in English as a special school project
or as a volunteer are invited to contact the Freeze Frame office.

Bandian n’a qu’une idée en tête : jouer au foot (soccer). Dans son
petit village africain, on le surnomme « Le Turbo de Makono ». Mais
pour réaliser son rêve, il devra se faire remarquer et franchir toutes
les étapes qui mènent à la gloire suprême : jouer dans un grand
club français... Un film qui explore la vie en Afrique, ainsi que des
thèmes universels tels l’engagement envers un objectif, le défi de
surmonter la pauvreté afin de suivre son rêve, et l’espoir. Le Ballon
d’or a été l’un des films les plus populaires de la première édition de
Freeze Frame en 1997. (Note : comme dans la tradition des contes de
fées, Bandian doit quitter son foyer afin de s’échapper à sa méchante
belle-mère.)

Trois méchants brigands passent leur temps à détrousser les voyageurs
en diligence et à détruire les attelages... Sans coeur et sans scrupule,
rien ne les arrête jusqu’au jour où ils rencontrent Tiffany, une petite
fille orpheline. Surpris, ils l’emmènent dans leur repaire. La petite
fille réussit à attendrir les redoutables bandits. Leur vision sombre et
violente du monde change du tout au tout, ils arrêtent les pillages,
libèrent les enfants d’un orphelinat et décident d’acheter un château
pour y héberger tous les orphelins du pays. De trois redoutables
méchants, ils deviennent, au contact de la petite fille, des pères de
famille tendres et attentionnés ! (Note : le monde des voleurs peut, dans
un premier temps, impressionner des esprits sensibles.)

Carmen à la campagne : à la plage
Carmen et les enfants déterminent les accessoires qu’il faut pour une journée à la
plage. Un sauveteur vient leur présenter les règles de la plage. Pomme-Pomme
décore son coin avec une piscine dans un bol, des palmiers, un parasol et il se met
des lunettes fumées.
Carmen Campagne : à la clinique vétérinaire
Carmen et les enfants sont inquiets parce que Pomme-Pomme est malade. Ils
tentent de soulager son mal. Enfin, Carmen appelle la vétérinaire. On découvre que
Pomme-Pomme a une indigestion et a besoin de sommeil pour récupérer. Carmen
et les enfants lui chantent une berceuse pour l’endormir. Le cochon d’Inde se réveille
en pleine forme.
Freeze Frame présente deux épisodes de la série de télévision écrite par Janine Tougas
qui met en vedette la chanteuse bien aimée des enfants : Carmen Campagne. Une série
faite sur mesure pour les enfants d’âge pré-scolaire et des premières années du primaire.

Août 1999, Bruxelles. Deux adolescents guinéens sont retrouvés morts
dans le train d’atterrissage d’un avion en provenance de Conakry.
Comme eux, chaque année, des milliers de jeunes Africains risquent
leur vie pour fuir ce continent durement affecté par les conflits et par
une pauvreté endémique.

expansion, le réalisateur
d’origine sénégalaise Musa
Dieng Kala retourne dans le
quartier où il a grandi, à Dakar, avec une douloureuse question :
Dieu a-t-il quitté l’Afrique ? La réponse est cinglante. À travers le
quotidien de cinq jeunes adultes cherchant à immigrer coûte que
coûte en Occident, le cinéaste révèle l’impuissance des individus face à
l’indifférence internationale et au désengagement des dirigeants d’une
société vidée de ses ressources et incapable de répondre à ses besoins.
Un film touchant qui clame la nécessité d’une écologie planétaire, où
aucun peuple ne serait laissé-pour-compte. Le réalisateur présentera
le film et répondra aux questions à toutes les projections.

Ce documentaire suit la quête d’un personnage fictif, un jeune
franco-manitobain de 25 ans, qui part sur les traces de Louis
Riel après avoir
découvert la bande
dessinée de Chester
Brown « Louis
Riel l’insurgé ». La
quête personnelle
du personnage
vise, au fil des
entrevues et
des lieux visités,
à mieux comprendre qui était Louis Riel et à pouvoir se forger
sa propre image de ce Métis qui a fortement marqué l’histoire
des franco-manitobains. Cette démarche est aussi le reflet de la
quête d’identité que vivent encore aujourd’hui les Métis et chaque
jeune issus d’une minorité ethnique. Ce film est particulièrement
approprié pour discuter du destin de Louis Riel et de sa place dans
l’histoire et l’imaginaire canadien.
