Bien cordialement, Emmanuel Texier Proviseur SCHOOL TERM DATES 2015-2016 Term 4 2015 12 October – 18 December Term 1 2016 1 February – 10 April Term 2 2016 26 April – 1 July Term 3 2016 18 July – 23 September TOP REPORT FROM PROVISEUR We are now in the middle of Term 4, our students continue to give the best of themselves through all the events and activities offered at school. Although the end of the school year is getting close, but students remain focused on their learning during these final weeks. Kerrie Blain’s trip to Europe Last week we welcomed back Kerrie Blain, our Principal, and Tom Kobal, our Deputy Principal, who both attended the International Baccalaurreate (IB) conference in The Hague. They connected with world leaders in education and attended exciting talks by some of the world’s most notable speakers in the field of innovative educational reform. I also joined Kerrie Blain in Paris for a series of successful meetings at Agency French Education Abroad (AEFE) head office and at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to progress and strengthen French Australian relationships. Commemorative Ceremonies – 11th November 2015 A Remembrance Day Ceremony was held in the school hall on November 11th, 2015. We were honoured to receive a delegation from the French Embassy in Canberra. The Embassy was represented by Mr Eric Soulier (Cultural Counselor). This ceremony was followed by a commemorative service at the French Embassy. Our school was represented by the Primary choir who sang the French and Australian National Anthems. Members of the Scout group from Telopea Park School/Lycée Franco-Australien also attended in their Scout uniforms and handed the commemorative wreaths to the invited guests. We would like to thank the French Embassy for giving our students the opportunity to share in such events that develop their openmindedness. This willingness demonstrates their continuing support to our school. Web radio We have now finalised our web radio project for AEFE Asia Pacific region and are now able to broadcast content 24 hours a day. We will share time slots between AEFE schools and broadcast content not only for our communities but also potentially for the whole world through the AEFE network. Conseils de classe Conseils de classe for EFS Secondary students will start soon. Parents can check their child’s results on our reporting software Pronote. Reports will be available on Pronote a few days after each conseil de classe. Exams Registrations for the French Baccalaureate and the Brevet are now complete for Year 9, 11 and 12 students. I will attend a meeting in Manilla from 25th to 27th November to organize the 2016 Baccalaureate. The coordinated organization of the French National Exam will be planned then with all the schools from the Asia-Pacific region. In the Asia-Pacific region, the exam papers are now electronically-based: all papers are scanned and marked by French teachers from the AEFE Asia-Pacific region. The completion of the marking process within two weeks is demanding, especially when one considers that the same process in France requires at least 4 weeks to be completed. I wish everyone a successful end of term and extend my best wishes to our Year 10 students who will sit their first Baccalauréat exam, the oral examination of « Travaux Personnels Encadrés » that will be held on 11th December 2015. Warm Regards Emmanuel Texier Proviseur TOP SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Page 2 of 10 Lost Property at the Fete Currently the Front Office has a number of items that were lost at the Fete. Please call first and come in to claim the items. Main Reception phone number is 614 233 88. Thank you! Student Injury Insurance and Ambulance Transport The Education and Training Directorate does not provide any insurance cover for injury, disease or illness to students resulting from school activities or school-organised excursions. Claims for compensation are met where there is a legal liability to do so. Liability is not automatic and depends on the circumstances in which any injury, disease or illness was sustained. As there is no automatic insurance cover for personal injury if your child is injured at school or during a school organised activity/excursion you should therefore consider whether taking out personal insurance cover for your child is warranted. This insurance might cover contingencies including medical/hospital expenses, ambulance transport outside the ACT, and cancellation of transport/accommodation or loss of/damage to luggage. The ACT Ambulance Service provides free ambulance transport for students who are injured or suddenly become ill at school or during an approved school organised activity within the ACT. HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS Career Development for Year 9 and Year 10 students I have been most impressed with the number of Year 9 and Year 10 students who have taken up work experience placements during 2015. To date, 68 students have had a placement and three times as many students have investigated a placement, but were unsuccessful. Even if a student is unsuccessful, the process they go through is all experience for preparing them for the world of work. Last week I attend the annual Careers Teachers Conference in Sydney. Such conferences are always worth attending and the message I brought back to Telopea is that most job opportunities in the future will focus around Health. For the next two/three weeks Telopea Park School has an Excursion Free Time. This means that no students can engage in activities outside the school while they undertake assessment. During this time, I am unavailable and look forward to continuing working with students from 25th November 2015. Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any issues regarding your student undertaking a work experience placement. Uraj Singh SLC English Page 4 of 10 PRIMARY NEWS Only five more weeks to go before the end of the school year 2015! Time to finalise projects, complete assessments and plan for the next school year. AEFE Professional learnings for French teachers Every year, three teachers participate in professional learning organized by the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) in the Asia-Pacific region. Isabelle Reynier will travel to Phnom Penh from 2nd to 4th December to attend professional learning entitled "Welcoming non-French speaking students in our schools." Sophie Caestecker will fly to Ho Chi Minh from 9th to 11th December for professional learning on "Developing the concepts of size and measures with Year 1 and 2 students ". Maria Lamrani Raphel will share with her colleagues "Innovative teaching practices in Kindergarten" in Singapore from 27th to 29th January, 2016. I took part in the meeting of the Primary School Principals of the Asia Pacific region from 14th to 16th October 2015 in Beijing. It was an opportunity to reflect on coordinated projects of French schools in the Asia-Pacific regionand also to share the specificity of our bilingual school, with its unique bicultural and binational components. The Grande Fête The Grande Fête, our yearly school festival, was held last Saturday 7th November and was a tremendous success. Our primary students contributed to this festive event by offering enjoyable performances combining Maypole dances, songs and instrumental pieces. We warmly thank parents, students and teachers, and of course the P&C for their commitment and ongoing support. Parent information night for prospective Kindergarten students We will welcome a new cohort of students into our school community from 24-27 November 2015. A parent information night for prospective Kindergarten (Maternelle) students was held last Wednesday 4th November. The four orientation mornings will help young students and their parents become familiar with their future environment and with the way our unique school works. French National Assessments CE1(Year 2) and CM2(Year 5) Our Year 2 and Year 5 students have just completed the French National Assessments in Literacy (French)and Numeracy. The results will be sent home together with Semester 2 reports. These assessments enable the school to obtain essential information on the students’ learning achievements at these two key moments in your child’s schooling. Remembrance day The celebration of the Armistice of November 11th 1914 is an important moment in the life of our institution. It illustrates and puts into perspective the fraternal bonds between Australia and France. With the commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of the Anzacs this year, the ceremony held at the school was even more important. The primary choir was invited to sing the national anthems of both countries at the French Embassy. Project “Junior Ambassadors 2016” (Ambassadeurs en herbe) Students from Year 3 to Year 6 practiced debating and argumentation with their class teachers in the recent weeks. The best of them will be selected to join teams of five primary and secondary students who will then compete in the school Final as part of the "Junior Ambassadors” project. This project (http://goo.gl/9UWvU7) aims at getting our primary school and high school students use their multilingualism as well as their linguistic and cultural mediation skills to raise awareness on current international issues through " verbal jousting ".It is an excellent opportunity for our students to refine their oral skills. The selected team will participate in the Final involving schools from the Asia-Pacific region and will be competing against other AEFE schools in Asia. A project to be continued… Julien Dugas Conseiller Pédagogique P&C NEWS LAST P&C MEETING: December 9th at 7pm, Senior Staff Room The last P&C meeting for 2015 will be held on Wednesday, December 9th. RSVP essential by Friday 13 November 2015 on 62476444. Dyslexia education and advocacy documentary films to empower students with dyslexia in Australian schools. Sadly dyslexia is the forgotten learning difficulty in education due to a lack of understanding and children are left to struggle on a daily basis. The incidence of dyslexia is more widespread than realised and it is estimated that there are between 3 – 5 students with dyslexia in every classroom. Outside the Square is a series of films to increase awareness and understanding of dyslexia in our education system. The scene is set with our brave and inspirational children supported by their proactive parent advocates. They share their struggles and difficulties encountered in our current education system. Our journey continues through the eyes of teachers that have embraced change. Through their shared experiences and supported by Australia’s leading education researchers, we develop a deep understanding of dyslexia and showcase effective teaching strategies to assist students with dyslexia. Student Engagement is offering an opportunity to view the three documentary films from outside the Square over a three week period. The film will be viewed first then teachers may remain back for a professional discussion based on resource available from the website. The session may be recorded as Teacher Identified professional learning for TQI purposes. There is an accompanying certificate.
