Henri Fantin-Latour (1836
Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) Sans titre Son to the artist Theodore Fantin-Latour, Henri Fantin-Latour studied with his father before becoming a student of Gustave Courbet. A painter of history, allegorical and mythological scenes, portraits and nudes, he also became famous for his prolific still-lifes of flowers and fruits. He entered the Paris Beaux-Arts Academy in 1864, aged 18, and started exhibiting at the Salon in 1861. He befriended the artists Manet and Whistler and exhibited together with them at Bonvin in 1859, joigning the so-called,"Café Guerbois artists group ", portrayed in his picture " A Studio in the Batignolles " for which he will be rewarded in 1870. He will receive a second medal for two portraits at the 1878 Salon and will be granted the Legion d'Honneur in 1879. Counting among the most subtle artists of the second half of the 19th century, he uses a very delicate technique and a dim light on his canvas . Whatever the subject matter, his compositions are always sensitive and intimate. A contemporary with writers like Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Zola, and with his impressionist friends Monet, Manet, Renoir and Whistler, he shared their ideas and struggles without ever adopting their artistic technique, remaining a faithfull and discreet follower of Delacroix. In this artist's studio, he has combined with virtuosity the art of the portrait with the still life. He portrays an artist
