EDITO
« Depuis plus de 30 ans les groupes coopérateurs en oncologie ont pour
motivation première le progrès médical et l’amélioration de la survie et
de la qualité de vie des patients atteints d'un cancer. C’est pour répondre
aux besoins d’une recherche indépendante tout en disposant des moyens
nécessaires à une recherche rigoureuse et de qualité que sont nés les
groupes coopérateurs en oncologie.
Souvent plusieurs par organes, isolés et parfois en concurrence, ils se sont
fédérés en groupes ou intergroupes d’organes puis en 2009 dans un réseau commun auquel
adhèrent la plupart d’entre eux: les GCO. Tous promoteurs académiques indépendants, ils
ont souhaité se structurer en réseau afin de poursuivre leur professionnalisation et d’être un
interlocuteur unique des partenaires institutionnels.
L'Intergroupe Francophone en Cancérologie Thoracique (IFCT) assure la présidence du
réseau GCO depuis le début d’année et j’ai donc le plaisir, de vous présenter le rapport
d’activité 2014 de notre réseau. L’activité des investigateurs membres des GCO est restée
très forte et les GCO entendent rendre compte, dans le présent document, du poids de leurs
réalisations scientifiques, collaborations et expériences concernant la recherche académique
contre le cancer.
On peut lire dans ce document que les GCO sont responsables d’une grande partie des
avancées thérapeutiques qui ont été obtenues ces dernières années par la France dans le
domaine du traitement du cancer. On voit aussi que les GCO contribuent, grâce à leur
ouverture à de nombreux centres universitaires et non-universitaires, à ce qu’un nombre
croissant de patients accèdent à l’innovation et à des soins de qualité. Les GCO se félicitent
donc que le Plan Cancer 2014-2019 entende s’appuyer très fortement sur la dynamique des
groupes coopérateurs pour répondre notamment à l’action 5.2 du plan et augmenter les
inclusions de patients dans les essais cliniques.
Les GCO sont devenus depuis quelques années des partenaires incontournables de nos
tutelles, et souhaitent continuer à mettre en avant l’excellence de la recherche clinique
française en cancérologie, reconnue dans le monde entier.
Permettez-moi en cette fin d’année particulièrement difficile, de souhaiter à tous ceux qui
travaillent avec nous et à leurs proches une excellente année avec une pensée particulière
pour ceux qui ont été cruellement éprouvés durant ces dernières semaines. »

La recherche clinique par les GCO en 2014 : chiffres clés
En 2014, les GCO ont réalisé 150 études cliniques1 qui ont permis à près de
6000 patients de bénéficier d’une prise en charge innovante et de soins de qualité.
Les GCO se sont également investis dans près de 17 programmes de
recherche

701 centres de santé ont participé activement à ces études : centres hospitaliers
(CH), centres hospitaliers universitaires (CHU), centres hospitaliers régionaux (CHR),
centres de lutte contre le cancer (CLCC) et établissements privés.
L’intérêt et la compréhension du patient est au cœur de l’activité de recherche des
GCO. Pour 100% des études cliniques, les notices d’information au patient qui
sont utilisées afin d’obtenir son consentement ont été au préalable soumises pour
relecture aux Comités de patients de la Ligue Nationale contre le Cancer.
Les GCO ont par ailleurs réalisé 119 publications dans des revues scientifiques
référencées (page 6) et ont aussi présenté les résultats de leurs projets de recherche
dans de nombreux congrès internationaux dont notamment ceux de l’ASCO, de
l’ESMO et de l’ASH (page 8).
Plus de 40% des études menées par les GCO ont été des études
internationales.
Les groupes se sont par ailleurs investis dans l’organisation de 20 évènements
scientifiques (page 15) destinés à un large public et qui permettent aux médecins
investigateurs des groupes et à des conférenciers invités de partager leurs dernières
avancées sur l’ensemble des thématiques couvertes par les GCO.

Bilan des publications pour l’année 2014
Les activités de recherche des GCO sont menées en toute indépendance scientifique et les
résultats de leurs travaux, qu’ils soient positifs ou négatifs, sont systématiquement
communiqués dans les congrès et revues scientifiques internationales de premier plan dans
leur spécialité. L'impact des GCO en termes de publications, réalisations et recommandations
est très significatif. Les travaux qui en sont issus sont parmi les références les plus citées par
les experts internationaux.

Une collaboration renforcée avec les associations de patients
Les GCO entretiennent des interactions très étroites avec des associations de patients et parents,
voire avec des fondations. Un partenariat peut aussi s’établir afin de coordonner des démarches
communes auprès de l’Institut National du Cancer (INCa) ou de la Direction Générale de l’Offre de
Soins (DGOS). Ci-après figurent quelques exemples de collaborations des GCO avec des associations.

La Ligue Nationale Contre la Cancer.
Pour toutes les études cliniques des GCO, les notices d’information au patient qui sont utilisées
afin d’obtenir son consentement sont au préalable soumises pour relecture aux Comités de
patients pour la Recherche Clinique en Cancérologie pilotés par la Ligue Nationale Contre le
Cancer.

A.R.C.A.D (Fondation Aide et recherche en cancérologie digestive)
La Fondation ARCAD est une fondation reconnue d’utilité publique dédiée exclusivement à la lutte
contre les cancers digestifs créée à l'initiative du Pr Aimery de Gramont et comprenant la FFCD
(Fédération Française de Cancérologie Digestive) et le GERCOR (Groupe Coopérateur
Multidisciplinaire en Oncologie) comme membres fondateurs.
 Association Française des Malades du Myélome Multiple (AF3M)
L’AF3M organise annuellement en partenariat avec l’IFM (Intergroupe Francophone du
Myélome) la journée d’information sur les Malades du Myélome. Des membres du Conseil
d’Administration de l’AF3M ont aussi participé à l’Assemblée Générale de l’IFM le 30 janvier 2014
afin de faire le point sur les essais cliniques en cours et les différentes stratégies thérapeutiques sur
le Myélome.

Association pour la Recherche sur les Tumeurs Cérébrales (ARTC)
L’ARTC soutient le développement de nombreux projets multicentriques de l’IGCNO - ANOCEF
(Association des Neuro-Oncologues d'Expression Française). Elle a permis notamment de
contribuer en partenariat avec l’ANOCEF à la création et à l’implémentation d’une base de
données nationale regroupant les informations cliniques et thérapeutiques des patients pris en
charge pour une tumeur cérébrale sur notre territoire.

Fédération Enfants et Santé
Cette Fédération finance la SFCE (Société Française de lutte contre les Cancers et les leucémies
de l’Enfant et de l’adolescent). Les Présidents de la Fédération Enfants et Santé, de l’association
l’Etoile de Martin et de L’UNAPECLE (Union Nationale des Associations de Parents d'Enfants
atteints de Cancer ou de Leucémie) sont représentés dans le Conseil d’Administration de la SFCE.
La Fédération Enfants et Santé et d’autres Associations et Fondations soutiennent la recherche et
ont participé financièrement à plusieurs appels d’offres, comme L’Etoile de Martin, Lions Club
international, Fondation des Lions de France, Lions Sport Action, Enfance et Cancer, Les Bagouz’à
Manon, Hubert Gouin Enfance & Cancer, Aremig (Association pour la Recherche et les Etudes dans
les Maladies Infantiles Graves) et Capucine.

France Lymphome Espoir
France Lymphome Espoir a pour objectif d'assister et d'informer tous ceux qui sont touchés par le
lymphome, patients ou proches. Le LYSA (The Lymphoma Study Association) est partenaire de
cette association et a notamment apporté son soutien à la Journée Mondiale du Lymphome organisée
du15 au 25 septembre 2014.

IMAGYN - Initiative des MAlades atteintes de cancers Gynécologiques
IMAGYN est une association de patientes atteintes de cancers gynécologiques crée à l’initiative
d’ARCAGY GINECO (Association de Recherche sur les CAncers dont Gynécologiques) en 2014.

L’actualité du réseau GCO
Les Groupes Coopérateurs en Oncologie (GCO) sont tous des groupes de recherche académique
spécialisés dans le domaine du cancer, indépendants et à but non lucratif. Afin de poursuivre leur
professionnalisation, gage de leur crédibilité et de leur indépendance scientifique les GCO ont
souhaité se fédérer en 2009 en un réseau. C’est ainsi que depuis 2009, le Conseil Exécutif des GCO,
composé des Directeurs et Présidents de chaque groupe, se réunit tous les trois mois.
En 2014, les objectifs essentiels retenus, qui ont été largement abordés lors des réunions du
Conseil Exécutif des GCO, sont les suivants :

Améliorer l’accès des GCO aux financements publics (notamment les appels à projets du
Programme Hospitalier de Recherche Clinique pilotés par l’INCa)

Valoriser le travail des médecins investigateurs participants aux études des GCO

Etre en capacité de répondre à des appels d'offres d'essais multi-organes et/ou bioguidés.
Pour répondre à ces 3 objectifs, les GCO ont souhaité se doter d'une structure plus lisible de
l'extérieur et deux mesures ont été proposées dans ce sens :

Création d'une présidence tournante de deux ans qui est assurée par un groupe à tour de rôle.
Ce groupe désigne les personnes (un élu et un manager) qui assurent cette tâche.

Création d'un poste transversal de chargé(e) de mission dont les fonctions sont d'assurer le
fonctionnement de la structure GCO (organisation et suivi des réunions), d'aider à repérer et à
répondre aux appels d'offres concernant les GCO, d'être chargé de missions ponctuelles
(notamment organisations de démarches auprès des tutelles, suivi des actions entreprises,
mise à jour du site internet).
Le Conseil Exécutif des GCO, en date du 28 octobre 2014, a décidé que l'Intergroupe
Francophone en Cancérologie Thoracique (IFCT) assurerait
la présidence du réseau pour la
période 2015-2017 avec pour représentants: Bernard Milleron, Président honoraire de l’IFCT et
Franck Morin, Directeur de l’IFCT.
N.B : Suite à cette décision, Claire Dubois a été recrutée au 1er avril 2015 pour assurer le poste de Chargée de
mission auprès des GCO.

Perspectives des GCO

Augmenter les inclusions de patients dans les essais cliniques (objectif 5.2 du Plan Cancer)
notamment sur les études de stratégie, de désescalade thérapeutique, les études avec
produit innovant, les études sur population ciblée (patients âgés, populations rares,
screening moléculaire).

Accélérer les projets à grande échelle, s’impliquer dans les projets européens de recherche
clinique et translationnelle.

Assurer la promotion d’essais de type « basket » trans-organes, qui constituent une des
grandes nouveautés en cancérologie au cours des dernières années.

Poursuivre la diversification des ressources afin de préserver le niveau de la contribution des
GCO à la recherche et à la santé publique, et de renforcer leur indépendance vis-à-vis de
l’industrie.

Continuer à répondre aux appels à projets de l’INCa dans le domaine de la recherche
clinique et jouer le rôle de référent dans les sujets pour lesquels l’INCa est sollicité par les
pouvoirs publics.

Renforcer et améliorer l’information auprès des patients en continuant à faire relire les
notices d’information patients aux comités des patients de la Ligue Contre le Cancer, en
recueillant les informations sur les essais cliniques et en les rendant publiques.
