PREVIEW : LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE - VALENCIENNES FC
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC Feature Preview
After sending out a clear message to their title rivals with last weekend's win at Marseille, Lille are favourites to emerge on top in
Sunday's derby of the North against Valenciennes.
The Marseille success, achieved thanks to a stoppage-time goal from substitute Pierre-Alain Frau, was the first time that Rudi
Garcia's side had beaten another of the teams currently in the top five, and it ensured that they sat top of Ligue 1 for an eleventh
consecutive week. While they almost paid for failing to kill the game off in the first-half, Lille's performance at the Stade Vélodrome
was exceptional, and will be best remembered for a wonderful long-range thunderbolt from Eden Hazard that opened the scoring.
"It was an astounding goal," admitted coach Garcia, "but he has already scored goals like that in the past, maybe not as good, but
certainly from as far out. He has a great shot with both feet, but I have already said to him that he doesn't shoot often enough. The
number of passes that preceded that goal was wonderful, it was a superb move. The midfield were magnificent, playing lots of
one-touch passes, keeping the ball and never looking troubled under pressure."
Despite a hectic fixture schedule over the course of the campaign, Lille's success can in a large part be attributed to the fact that their
most important players have steered clear of injury and suspension. While Mickaël Landreau, Adil Rami and captain Rio Mavuba
have all started every league game, eight others have appeared in at least 21 matches, and the fluidity of movement and sharpness
of passing on display in Marseille suggested that this team could almost play with their eyes closed at the moment.
However, Garcia has a couple of selection problems for the visit of Valenciennes, with Florent Balmont serving the first of a two-game
ban. In addition, Franck Béria is struggling with bruising on his leg and Aurélien Chedjou pulled out of training on Wednesday with a
back problem. However, seventeen-goal top scorer Moussa Sow is back in training and appears to have overcome a knee knock.
Lille are unbeaten in fourteen home games in all competitions stretching back to late October. However, the state of the playing
surface at their home in Villeneuve d'Ascq has come in for major criticism recently and some have even questioned whether it could
jeopardise the club's chances of winning a first league title since 1954. The good news, then, is that a new surface has been laid in
time for the clash with a Valenciennes side who make the 45-kilometre journey north-west on the back of a six-match unbeaten run.
Philippe Montanier's side have drawn four of these games, though, including goalless stalemates at home against Lorient and
Monaco in the last two weekends. While they remain a comfortable six points clear of the relegation zone, Valenciennes have not
been out of the bottom half since the beginning of September, and their away form is largely responsible for that. Their only success
on the road came at Monaco in October, and Montanier - who somewhat sarcastically insisted that the odds against his men winning
should be 800-1 - is well aware of the challenge posed by the league leaders.
"Lille are flying. They have a new pitch, they have the league's top scorer, the best attack, one of the best backlines," he said. "Their
players are technically superior and they are at home. Nobody is expecting much from us, and we prefer it that way. Lille are clear
favourites but I am convinced we have a chance."
Valenciennes are without Gaëtan Bong, Jonathan Lacourt, Foued Kadir and Guillaume Loriot but Rafael is back after a ban.

Week 27
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC
-HISTORY AND TEAM TIES: Lille have the upper hand in home meetings with Valenciennes, winning 9, drawing 2 and losing 6 of
their 17 previous top-flight clashes.
-Last season, Lille romped to a 4-0 win in this fixture in week 15. Gervinho scored twice in between a strike from Pierre-Alain Frau
and Yohan Cabaye's penalty.
-Valenciennes' last win here was a 2-0 success in April, 2007.
-Earlier this season, the reverse fixture ended 1-1 at the Stade Nungesser in week 11. A bizarre Nicolas Penneteau og (86') put
LOSC ahead, but Grégory Pujol levelled for the hosts (88').
-Veteran goalkeeper Grégory Wimbée - who has played just once for Valenciennes since joining in 2009 - was a regular in the Lille
goal between 1998 and 2004.
-Brazilian defender Rafael Schmitz made 99 league appearances for Lille before moving to VA in 2008 via a spell at Birmingham City.
-Valenciennes midfielder José Saez began his career at Lille but never made a league appearance before joining VA in 2005.
-Rio Mavuba and Renaud Cohade played together at Bordeaux in 2004/05.
-Frau and Jonathan Lacourt spent the second half of the 2005/06 season together at Lens, where Frau was on loan from Lyon.
-LILLE
-GENERAL: Lille have been top of Ligue 1 for 11 consecutive weeks. They have 49 points from 26 games, and lead Rennes in
second on goal difference.
-Rudi Garcia's side have won 13, drawn 10 and lost 3 of their games. They have scored 45 goals, more than any other team, and
having conceded 25 goals, they have the best goal difference, +20.
-At home, Lille have won 8, drawn 4 and lost just one (v Marseille, wk 10). Only Rennes and Lyon have taken more points on home
turf.
-Moussa Sow is Ligue 1's leading scorer with 17 goals. Gervinho has netted 11, and is also LOSC's leading assist provider with 7,
ahead of Eden Hazard, who has laid on 6.
-Lille won 2-1 at Marseille last weekend. Hazard's opener (10') was cancelled out by Loïc Rémy (60') before Frau's winner (90+1'). It
was the first time they had won against another of the current top five this season.
-Lille have lost just once (at Montpellier) in their last 16 league games.
-Lille have yet to have a player sent-off this season and lie second in the Fair Play League behind Brest.
-Mickaël Landreau has played in every minute of every game. Rami and Mavuba have also started every game.
-FRENCH CUP: Lille won through to the semi-finals for the first time since 1984/85 after beating Lorient in the last eight (0-0 aet, 5-3
on pens).
-They will go to Nice in the last four on 19 April.
-EUROPA LEAGUE: Lille were knocked out by PSV Eindhoven in the last 32, losing 5-3 on aggregate.
-TRANSFERS: Lille agreed a deal with Valencia in January that will see defender Adil Rami join the Spanish club in the summer.
-Eden Hazard recently signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2015. Pierre-Alain Frau is out of contract this summer
and has not been offered a new deal.
-TEAM NEWS: Florent Balmont serves the first of a two-match ban. Sow should be fit. Franck Béria is struggling (bruised leg) while
Aurélien Chedjou pulled out of training on Wednesday (back).
-VALENCIENNES
-GENERAL: Valenciennes come into week 27 in 13th place with 32 points. They have won 7, drawn 11 and lost 8 games. They are 6
points clear of the relegation zone, although they have not been out of the bottom half of the table since early September.
-Philippe Montanier's side have taken just 9 points on their travels, with one win (at Monaco, wk 10), 6 draws and 6 defeats. Only

Arles-Avignon have collected fewer points on the road, although Lens and Lorient have the same number.
-Valenciennes have scored 30 goals (joint-tenth best), and conceded 27. Along with Nice, they have the best defence outwith the top
six.
-The 0-0 draw with Monaco last weekend was their second successive scoreless draw, and extended their unbeaten run to 6 games.
-Pujol is VA's top scorer with 10 goals, followed by Gaël Danic on 6. Danic has also provided the most assists (5).
-Nicolas Penneteau has played in every minute of every league game.
-FRENCH CUP: Valenciennes were knocked out by Ligue 2 Angers in the round of 64.
-TRANSFERS: Steeven Langil was signed on loan from Auxerre until the end of the season in January. Dianbobo Baldé was released
and joined Arles-Avignon.
-TEAM NEWS: Gaëtan Bong, Jonathan Lacourt, Foued Kadir and Guillaume Loriot are all either injured or recovering from long-term
injury problems. Rafael is available again after a ban.
LOSC Lille Métropole
- The 2009-10 season saw Lille miss out on the Champions League on the final day of the campaign, qualifying instead for the
Europa League for the second consecutive season.
- Lille's final-day defeat, 2-1 away to Lorient, saw Les Dogues slip from second place to fourth.
- Lille finished season 2009-10 with the best attack in France, their 72 goals eclipsing title winners OM's tally of 69. Lille had three
players in the top 20 of Ligue 1's goalscoring charts - Gervinho, Pierre-Alain Frau and Yohan Cabaye - who all scored 13 goals.
- Lille scored four goals in a match on seven occasions in season 2009-10, five of which saw them keep a clean sheet.
- Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year for last season, Belgian international Eden Hazard is one of the hottest young properties in Europe
and brushed off interest from European giants Arsenal and Real Madrid to extend his contract at Lille and tie himself to the club until
2014.
- Lille have won two Ligue 1 crowns (1946, '54) and finished runners-up five times (1948, '49, '50, '51 and 2005). They have won the
French Cup five times (1946, '47, '48, '53, '55), and were beaten finalists twice (1945, '49).
- In the 2005-06 Champions League campaign Lille played all their home matches at the Stade de France in Paris, because their
regular home - the Stadium Métropole Villeneuve d?Ascq - did not meet UEFA requirements. The club used neighbouring Lens'
Stade Bollaert for its European matches in the 2006-07 season.
- Lille earned an historic 1-0 win over Manchester United at the Stade de France in the 2005-06 Champions League and became the
first French side to register an away win over AC Milan (2-0) the following year.
- Lille hope to open their new home ground, the state-of-the-art Stade de La Borne de l'Espoir, in 2012. It will have a capacity of
50,186. It will be the first stadium in France to have a closing roof.
Valenciennes FC
-Valenciennes returned to the top flight in 2006-07 after finishing as Ligue 2 champions in 2006 - the second time in the club's history
after 1971-72.
-Valenciennes have never won the French Cup or League Cup, although they did reach the French Cup final in 1951, when they lost
3-0 to Strasbourg.
-VA were relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 1992-93 season and the club's image was further tarnished by the match-fixing

scandal that erupted after their Week 36 match versus Marseille (a 0-0 draw). OM were subsequently stripped of the 1993 Ligue 1
crown and relegated to the second division.
-On August 20, 2008 Valenciennes defender David Sommeil suffered a heart attack in training and was resuscitated by teammates
David Ducourtioux and Rafael Schmitz but was told that he will never play professional football again.
-Valenciennes finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season, their best performance since coming 8th in 1979-80. They scored 50 goals and
conceded the same number.
-Valenciennes had one of the best away records in the top-flight in 2009-10, winning seven and drawing three of their 19 outings. That
was a big improvement on 2008-09, when they failed to win at all on the road.
-Coach Philippe Montanier replaced PSG-bound Antoine Kombouaré in June 2009 after guiding Boulogne-sur-Mer to promotion from
Ligue 2 for the first time in their history and being named Ligue 2 Manager of the Year.
-Montanier spent five years at the Boulogne helm, having played for Caen, Nantes, Toulouse and Saint-Etienne as a goalkeeper in
his playing career.
-Valenciennes have played at their 16,547-capacity Stade Nungesser home since 1930. However, they are due to move to a new
25,000-seat arena in the spring of 2011.
