Routes to Certification
• Traditional Route – for Canadian trained physicians going
through the Canadian residency training program
• United States residency / Traditional Route – for those
who have completed ACGME accredited training in the US
• Jurisdictional Route – for international medical graduates
(IMG) who have completed training in of the 29 approved
international jurisdictions
• Academic Certification – for those who are in a full time
Academic position within a university

Routes to Certification
• Practice Ready Assessment – for IMGs who have been
assessed by their Medical Regulatory Authority and deemed
“ready to practice”
• Individual Competency Assessment – for IMGs who have
sat the National Assessment Collaboration “NAC” exam
assessing readiness for entrance into residency training
• Practice Eligibility Route for Specialists and
Subspecialists – an assessment of physicians in practice to
determine eligibility to the examinations
• Subspecialty Examination Affiliate Program (SEAP) – for
internationally trained physicians training in a subspecialty in
Canada, who are not eligible for the primary examination due
to the jurisdiction of training

Important Policies
End of training date
•If changed, notification to PG Dean and Credentials
Unit as soon as known. EOT date cannot be changed
after the examination
(EOT)
Waiver of training
•Can only be granted by the PG Dean on the
recommendation of the PD. Can only be taken in
final year and cannot be granted after the resident
has sat the examination
Letter of eligibility
•Eligibility to the certification examinations is given
for three consecutive years
Renewal of
examination eligibility
•Required after eligibility expires after three attempts.
Application to be filled out along with a fee
Part-time training
•Speak to your Credentials Agent for the request form

•The Royal College will make every effort to make
accommodations under the application human rights
legislation

•Royal College continues to work on and clarify the

•All recommendations for credit must be submitted by
the Program Director and supported by the
Postgraduate Dean
