Spring/Summer 2012
Looking Forward
Spring and Summer are both stimulating times of the year, as we all come out of
hibernation and look forward more eagerly to the future. In the wine world there is
much to be excited about:
• The 2009 Bordeaux have been bottled and we will receive a large shipment in May undoubtedly, a top class vintage that will give enormous pleasure from the First and
Second Growths to the more modest appellations. It is always fun to taste the new
vintage as soon as it arrives, so you can start understanding the underlying qualities
that you will enjoy for many years to come.
• The anticipated comparison with the very different, but also excellent 2010
Bordeaux. These two vintages will be rivals for years to come, with personal
preferences showing favoritism for one or another. We have seen prices of the most
highly rated 2009 Bordeaux increase significantly, which makes some 2010s look
particularly good value.
• The 2011 Bordeaux Futures will be offered this Spring – it will be the second Futures
vintage that we offer and I am writing this while sitting on the plane to Bordeaux
– there is always much anticipation about the true quality of the newest vintage
and how it will be priced. If you are interested in buying Futures, please contact us
for our new brochure that explains the process and don’t forget: it’s fun - you are
securing your future drinking (or perhaps your children’s future drinking)!
• We have just shipped our brand new “Sotheby’s Champagne” to both New York and
Hong Kong. This is a 100% Grand Cru, Blanc de Blancs NV made by our friend
Julien Barbier at R&L Legras, whose wine has been our “house” champagne since
we started our retail business. We are excited to have our first “own label” wine and
will also continue to carry Julien’s label.
• We are constantly buying new wines, from private collectors (please let us know if
you have wines in excellent condition to sell), Bordeaux negociants and New York
wholesalers, so this price list is showing our highlights. Our full inventory is always
up to date on our website. Best wishes,
Jamie Ritchie

2011 Bordeaux Futures
We are offering 2011 Bordeaux Futures – please contact Michelle Parenti at [email protected] to get our new Futures
brochure, receive our tasting notes and the wines we thought showed best, create a wishlist, and to receive all offers before they are
released to our general email list.
2010 Bordeaux FUTURES
The 2010s are very different to the 2009s, having a greater purity, elegance and classicism - at the top level they will rival and sometimes be
better than the 2009s.

Bordeaux 2009: The 2009s are incredibly generous, friendly
and easy-going, but also with class, depth and structure – it is a
vintage that will be universally adored, particularly by Americans.

La Tache, DRC 1996: What an extraordinary wine - in a great class of
its own. Enormous fruit, tannin and length. Its concentrated, complex
heart is further enhanced by a hint of vanilla from the excellent
(Francois Frères) wood. I think this is landmark La Tâche.

Vosne Romanee, Aux Brulees 2001, Rene Engel: This oozes
old-vine character. Great juicy texture to go with the density and
concentration. Luscious, yet ‘cutting edge’ flavour on the palate. Succulence and opulence matched with the freshness of the
vintage. –Serena Sutcliffe, MW

RosÉ
Rosé: Good Rosé is refreshing and fun, bad Rosé is headache
inducing. We only like crisp, fresh, dry Rosé, which is all we have.
Last summer, I drank a lot of excellent Giscours Rosé with our
friends Alexander van Beek and Veronique Sanders, but we could
not buy any. This year, both have given us their Giscours and
Haut Bailly 2011 Rosés as an exclusive in New York –Jamie Ritchie

Dezat: I have enjoyed and admired the Dezat wines for many
years – classic Sancerre and Pouilly Fume and an excellent
Sancerre Rose, all at the right price. While they prefer their new
“modern” label, we have stayed with the classic label – no surprise
there! –Jamie Ritchie

Caymus Special Selection 1997: Lovely violetty scent, which is
a very Napa thing in 1997. So beautiful. Such a lacy texture. Pure
pleasure to drink. Lovely and fresh, but not massive. Silky finesse
which caresses the palate. –Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Harlan 1997: Classic nose of beautifully-bred “bordelais’ friut.

tannins. Silky texture. Ends on a strongly flavoured note of cassis
and redcurrants. –Serena Sutcliffe, MW
