La Chapelle is known as one of the greatest Rhône wines and a standard bearer of the appellation with the 1961 vintage widely recognized as a vinous masterpiece that is ranked alongside the Bordeaux First Growths from that year. The sale represents an exceptionally rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a range of La Chapelle vintages which have never before left the Domaine at which they were produced. The auction includes 84 lots of La Chapelle expected to bring over $250,000, estimates range from $60/100,000 for six bottles of the 1961 vintage to $250/350 for a jeroboam from 2003. Further highlights from the sale include a wide selection of top Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, as well as a superb range of Italian wine from the Reserve Cellar of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Café. Overall the auction is estimated to bring $2.5/3.6 million. Serena Sutcliffe MW, Worldwide Head of Wine at Sotheby’s said: “La Chapelle is one of the truly great Rhône wines, and so I am delighted that the Frey family allowed Sotheby’s access to some of their most remarkable library of vintages. Together we have created this unique sale that gives all lovers of La Chapelle an extraordinary opportunity to buy this iconic wine over a period of six decades.” Union Square Café A further highlight of the sale is a selection of wine from the reserve cellar of the Union Square Café. Over 260 lots will be offered from the legendary New York establishment with an estimate in excess of $125,000. Serena Sutcliffe MW commented: “Union Square Cafe is a New York institution and its founder, Danny Meyer, has given a new meaning to restaurant hospitality, with unbending standards and amazing consistency. When raiding the Reserve Cellar, we came up with great vintages of some of Italy's most alluring wine names and regions, in years that could be poured at Thanksgiving in a few weeks, surely the most suitable moment to share delicious wine and food with family and friends.” Important La Chapelle Highlights Lot 2: 1 magnum 1959, est. $8,000-11,000 (pictured above) Lot 3: 6 bottles 1961, est. $60,000-100,000 (left) Lots 24-25: 6 bottles 1978, est. $10,000-15,000 Lot 42: 12 bottles 1990, est. $6,000-9,000 Lot 69: 1 Melchior 2006, est. $3,000-5,000 Lot 84: 1 Melchior 2009, est. $6,500 – 9,500 2 Union Square Café Highlights Lots 431–435: 12 bottles 1995 Giuseppe Quintarelli, Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva, est. $2,000-3,000 per lot Lots 457 – 458: 12 bottles 1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli, Alzero Cabernet Franc, est. $2,000–2,750 per lot Lots 554-559: 12 bottles Bartolo Mascarello, Barolo 1999, est. $650-900 per lot Other Sale Highlights Champagne: Lots 247-248: 2 mathusalem 1990 Louis Roederer Cristal, est. $9,000-12,000 each Lot 424: 6 magnums 1990 Dom Pérignon Rosé, est. $5,500-7,500 Lots 429-430: 12 bottles 1996 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, est. $2,250-3,250 per lot Lot 428: 12 bottles 1996 Salon le Mesnil, est $2,750-3,750 Red Bordeaux: Lots 306, 1414: 12 bottles 1982 Lafite, est. $37,500-50,000 Lot 258: 12 bottles 1982 Latour, est. $18,000-25,000 Lots 261, 1169-1170, 1327-1328: 12 bottles 1982 Mouton Rothschild, est. $14,000-20,000 Lots 265, 1416: 12 bottles 1982 Margaux, est. $9,000-12,000 Lot 1417: 12 bottles 1989 Haut Brion, est. $12,000-16,000 Red Burgundy: Lot 233: 8 bottles 1990 Richebourg, DRC, est. $7,000-10,000 Lot 693:1 bottle Romanée Conti, DRC, est. $10,000-20,000 Lot 1179: 12 bottles Musigny 1990, JF Mugnier, est. $8,500-12,000 Lot 902: 2 bottles Romanée Conti, DRC 2005, est. $14,000-20,000 White Burgundy: Lot 778: 6 bottles Chevalier Montrachet 1997, Domaine Leflaive, est. $1,800-2,500 Lot 386: 2 bottles Montrachet 2003, DRC, est. $4,000-5,500 (pictured right) Lots 388-391: 12 bottles Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche 2004, Joseph Drouhin, est. $2,500-3,500 per lot Lot 397: 3 bottles Montrachet 2004, Domaine des Comtes Lafon, est. $4,000-6,000 Lot 402: 1 bottle Montrachet 2000, Domaine Leflaive, est. $2,5003,500 Lot 403: 1 bottle Montrachet 2001, Domaine Leflaive, est. $2,250-3,250 Italy: Lots 431-435: 12 bottles Amarone della Valpolicella, Classico Riserva 1995, Giuseppe Quintarelli, est. $2,000-3,000 per lot Lot 708: 4 bottles Barolo Monfortino Riserva 1990, Giacomo Conterno, est. $1,600-2,250 Lot 709: 3 bottles Sassicaia 1968, est. $1,800-2,500 3 Lot 713: 3 bottles Sassicaia 1985, est. $3,000-4,000 Rhone: Lot 1056: 12 bottles Château de Beaucastel, Hommage à Jacques Perrin 1998, est. $4,000-6,000 Lot 1058: 12 bottles Château de Beaucastel, Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2001, est. $4,000-5,500 Lot 1066: 12 bottles Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina 2007, Clos St Jean, est. $2,000-3,000 Lot 1071: 12 bottles Chateauneuf du Pape, Pegau, Cuveé Capo 2000, est. $3,000-4,000 Lot 1072: 1 Methusaleh Chateauneuf du Pape, Pegau, Cuveé Capo 2000, est. $2,500-3,500 Lot 1075: 1 Methusaleh Chateauneuf du Pape, Pegau, Cuveé Capo 2003, est. $2,000-3,000 California: Seven vintages of Screaming Eagle including: Lot 1504: 3 bottles Screaming Eagle 2002, est. $3,500-4,500 (pictured right) Lot 1509: 3 bottles Screaming Eagle 2007, est. $4,000-5,500 Eight vintages of Harlan Estate including: Lot 1496: 6 bottles 2007, est. $3,000-4,000 Twenty-six vintages of Caymus Special Selection including: Lot 1355: 12 bottles 1985, est. $1,100-1,600 Twenty-eight vintages of Heitz Martha’s Vineyard including: Lot 1377: 11 bottles Heitz Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet 1974: est. $7,000-10,000 Lots 1393-1394: 12 bottles of Heitz Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet 1985, est. $1,700-2,250 per lot Eight vintages of Joseph Phelps Cabernet Insignia including: Lots 984-986: 12 bottles 2001, est. $950-1,400 per lot Lots 987-994: 12 bottles 2005, est. $950-1,400 per lot # # # 4
