A miniature medieval castle, Annes Grove Gatelodge was designed in 1853 to impress visitors to the main house -‐ Annesgrove House and Gardens. The silence which surrounds this rural property is part of the charm for our visitors. Beyond the gate, in the privacy of a small garden, guests can enjoy great peace and tranquility -‐ and the small patio offers a wonderful opportunity to dine 'al fresco' on balmy summer evenings. La maison de Gardien d’Annes Grove est un château médiéval miniature construit en 1853 pour
impressionner les visiteurs de la maison principale: ‘Annes grove House and Gardens’. Le silence qui
entoure cette propriété rurale fait partie du charme de ce lieu. Au-delà de la porte, dans l'intimité d'un
petit jardin, vous pourrez goûter au grand calme et à la tranquillité. Le petit patio offre une merveilleuse
occasion de dîner à l’extérieur lors des douces soirées d'été. Il s'agit d'un bâtiment intensément
romantique. A l'intérieur, des poutres, planchers de bois, arches en pierre et chambres douillettes donne à
cette propriété un cadre idyllique pour ceux qui recherchent une escapade romantique.
History:
Annes Grove is built in Gothic style. It is situated at the junction of
three quiet country roads and surrounded by mature beech trees,
which cradle the property and stonewalls. Annes Grove was
designed by Benjamin Woodward, of the distinguished firm of
architects Deane and Woodward in 1853. Since Woodward designed
only two gatelodges of this type, it is of some architectural
importance. The lodge, prior to restoration, had not been lived in
since the 1940s.
Gate lodges are a distinct category of buildings. They had a
particular and important function, yet are of small enough scale to allow indulgence in flights of fantasy.
Gate lodges range in style from the rustic hermitage to hindu temple, to greek revival archway - and
crucially, they provided an indication to outsiders of the house, and owner: they belonged to an age when
image and appearances were of great importance.
La loge Annes Grove est construite dans le style gothique. Elle est située à
la jonction de trois routes de campagne et entourée de vieux hêtres et de
murs de pierres. Elle a été conçue par Benjamin Woodward, du célèbre
cabinet d'architectes ‘Deane et Woodward’ en 1853. Depuis Woodward n’a
conçu que deux maisons de gardien (Gatelodges) de ce type, ce qui fait son
importance architecturale. Avant la restauration, la loge n'avait pas été
habitée depuis les années 1940.
Les maisons de gardiens (Gates Lodge) appartiennent à une catégorie
distincte de bâtiments. Elles ont eu une fonction particulière et importante,
mais sont d'échelle suffisamment petite pour permettre l'indulgence quant à
leur hauteur et leur fantaisie. Le style rustique de cette maison de gardien
est inspiré de l'ermitage des temples hindou ou encore des arcades de la
renaissance grecque. Les Gatelodges permettaient de fournir une indication
à l'entrée des propriétés, ils appartiennent à une époque où l'image et les
apparences étaient d'une grande importance pour les propriétaires.
