Museum of Antiquities in
Leiden hosted the second
Dorestad congress, exactly
five years after the first.
This congress was attached
to the exhibition Golden
Middle Ages: The Netherlands in the Merovingian
World, 400-700 AD and
brought together scholars to discuss these 'Dark
Ages', their burials and settlements, rituals and identities, and the position of the
Low Countries in the world-wide networks of early-medieval Europe. The congress opened with a keynote
lecture by dr. Gareth Williams (The British Museum).
Sessions were devoted to key themes like early-medieval identity and agency, so-called royal burials in Europe, significant find categories like garnets, coins and
Merovingian glass, important new sites and finds from
the Low Countries and recent work in the Carolingian
‘vicus famosus’ of Dorestad.

The most comprehensive study ever produced
of Latin in medieval Britain
For more than a thousand years after the end of
the Roman empire, Latin remained an important
language across Western Europe. Used throughout the Middle Ages for purposes as diverse as
literature, scientific discourse, administration, and
religious worship, it existed alongside the many
everyday native languages of the people.
The position of medieval Latin as a non-native
language and its resulting inherent ‘contact’ with
the other languages, led its users to expand the
available vocabulary in various ways so that they
could express the meanings they wanted when
the existing Latin vocabulary was insufficient.
The Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British
Sources presents the vocabulary of the Latin language as written in Britain and by Britons abroad
from Gildas (AD 540) to Camden (1600). Thousands of Latin works by more than 2,000 named
authors are known of from Britain in this period,
together with the works of many anonymous writers and a huge body of public and private documents. These texts form a continuous tradition
of thought and composition in a language based
upon and derived from the highest literary register of Classical and Late Latin, but also incorporating elements and influences from the contemporary languages spoken, written, or known in
these islands, including Greek and various Celtic,
Germanic, Romance, and Semitic languages.

The book aims to reflect on the characteristics of urban centers of the kingdom of Italy between the ninth
and the eleventh centuries, filling a noticeable historiographical gap. The cities in Northern Italy in this period
have not yet been analysed with a multidisciplinary
approach, able to outline their specific and distinctive
characteristics and to relate this particular period both
to the post-Roman past and also to the following “Communal” phase. Urban identities are examined from different points of view: from a political perspective, in relation to the dialectic between center, periphery and to
the border areas of the kingdom; from an institutional
and territorial standing point, analyzing the structures
of local power and public territorializations; according
to social and military history approaches, highlighting
the continuities and transformations in comparison
with former and following centuries. The issue of urban identities is also investigated archaeologically, in
relation to urban development and to topographic
transformations, and culturally explored, examining
mutual exchanges between the cities of the kingdom.
Another aspect rarely addressed by previous literature
is ultimately to compare the results of this research on
the Italic kingdom with studies on the Transalpine Carolingian and post-Carolingian empire and kingdoms, outlining common trends, but also specific peculiarities.
Cristina La Rocca teaches Medieval History at the University of Padova. Her main fields of interest are early
medieval history, early medieval funerary practices, and
gender history.
Piero Majocchi had collaborated with Cristina La Rocca
at the University of Padova (Italy) and with Serena Romano at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) in different research in Early, Central and Late Medieval History.

This volume provides the first edition and systematic study of the Liber florum celestis doctrine by the
Benedictine John of Morigny. Until recently this work
was known only through a chronicle report of its burning at Paris in 1323, on the grounds that it revived a
condemned ritual called the Ars notoria. However, it
survives in three versions in more than twenty copies
from across Europe. An intimate visionary collaboration
between human and divine, the Liber florum will be of
interest to all students of the middle ages, especially
those interested in university learning, monasticism,
liturgy, mysticism, visions, magic, and book history.

Ce volume réunit 27 articles que Geneviève Hasenohr a consacrés à la littérature de dévotion médiévale entre 1978 et 2007. Études et éditions de
textes romans font toucher du doigt ce que furent
au quotidien les modèles de vie chrétienne et les
lectures spirituelles proposés aux laïcs en France
entre XIIe et XVIe siècle, leur fonds monastique
commun et leur touche propre. Cette reprise est
complétée par la publication actualisée d’une
documentation inédite, attendue depuis des décennies par les médiévistes : une partie des notices documentaires primitivement destinées à
prendre place dans le t. 2 (jamais paru) du vol. VIII
du Grundriss der romanischen Literaturen des Mittelalters : La littérature française aux XIVe et XVe
siècles (t. 1, Heidelberg, 1988). Quelques études
plus philologiques, une bibliographie de l’auteur
et plusieurs index complètent la sélection.

early print that bridges divisions between the study of
print and the study of literature, between manuscripts
and printed books, and between pre- and post-1500
textual cultures. Through
an extensive focus on medieval texts and ideas, it is
demonstrated here that in
the half-century before the
Reformation, English print was part of a highly energetic tradition of late medieval textual production. By following early print across a range of genres (history writing, religious instruction, hagiography, law books, and
translation), this study also sheds light on the contexts
within which the agencies of early printers mattered,
including mercantile politics, civic and statute law, and
theological economics.

Jewish and non-Jewish legal and intellectual traditions.
Judith Olszowy-Schlanger, PhD, Cambridge (1995), is
Professor of Hebrew Manuscript Studies at the École
Pratique des Hautes Études, Sciences historiques et
philologiques and an associate researcher at the Hebrew section of the IRHT, Paris. Her main research
interests are medieval Hebrew diplomatics and palaeography, Cairo Genizah studies, as well as scholarly
contacts between Jewish and non-Jewish cultures.

Les manuscrits décrits dans ce volume présentent des
textes de genres divers dont la date de composition
est toujours postérieure au XIIe siècle. Avec quelques
exceptions, ces textes furent rédigés et étudiés en Espagne, en Provence, en Italie et dans l’empire byzantin.
En continuité avec le volume I de la collection, les cinq
premiers manuscrits décrits (Hébreu 704 à 708) donnent
des commentaires sur le Guide des égarés ou d’autres
textes se rapportant à Maïmonide. Ici encore, certains de
ces manuscrits mettent en évidence l’existence – jusqu’ici
ignorée – d’écoles de philosophie et montrent à quel
point la philosophie juive était vivante entre le XIIIe et le
XVe siècle. Les cinq exemplaires des Guerres du Seigneur
de Gersonide (Hébreu 721 à 725) ont des caractères codicologiques et paléographiques différents, car les œuvres
de ce grand philosophe étaient étudiées en dehors des
écoles. D’autres œuvres, mêlant cabale et philosophie,
sont inédites et pratiquement inconnues : la Pierre de Saphir, d’Elnathan Qalqish (Hébreu 727 et 728) ; la Perfection de la beauté, de Samuel Sarsa (Hébreu 729 à 732) ;
les Demeures de Jacob, de Jacob ben Salomon Sarfati
(Hébreu 733), livre en partie autobiographique et copie
autographe qui nous emmènent dans la Provence du XIVe
siècle. Plusieurs volumes sont consacrés à l’explication
fdes commandements et à la morale. Parmi eux, on relève deux copies d’un ouvrage du cabaliste Yosef Giqatilia
(Hébreu 713 et 714) et quatre copies des Degrés des vertus de Yehiel ben Yequtiel ‘Anav (715 à 718), livre qui fut
longtemps à la mode en Italie. Deux manuscrits renvoient
à l’aire ashkénaze (Hébreu 709 et 712). Le second porte
des textes polémiques du XIIIe siècle : celui de la « Dispute
de Paris » (1240-42), la version la plus ancienne du Sefer
Yosef ha-Meqane et un florilège polémique de citations
latines en caractères hébreux (en cours d’édition par l’auteur de ce volume) qui illustre des aspects inconnus de la
controverse judéo-chrétienne.

caractères hébreux conservés dans les bibliothèques
de France (Cristina Ciucu, Kabbale II) offre la description complète – paléographique, codicologique,
matérielle, historique et textuelle – des mss Hébreu
778 à Hébreu 800. Copiés en Espagne, en Italie du
Nord, à Jérusalem ou dans l’espace byzantin, entre
le XIVe et le XVIe siècle, ces manuscrits portent, pour
la plupart, des copies de diverses parties de la littérature zoharique. Analysés dans toutes leurs composantes selon la méthode novatrice qui fonde notre
entreprise (aspects matériels et textuels, notes
marginales de lecteurs, marques de possession,
notes d’achat et de vente, références historiques,
marques de censure, etc.), ils offrent des informations aussi précieuses que rares sur la formation, la
circulation et la réception de cette littérature. Les
autres textes copiés dans ces manuscrits sont principalement des écrits de mystique juive des XIIIe et
XIVe siècles, composés, pour l’essentiel, en Espagne,
en Provence et en Italie par de grandes figures de
la pensée juive médiévale telles que Nachmanide,
Abraham Abulafia, Joseph Giqatilla, Moise de Léon,

Achevé en 1442 par Martin Le Franc, alors secrétaire
de l’antipape Félix V (Amédée VIII, duc de Savoie),
le poème du Champion des dames est un long plaidoyer en faveur de la cause des femmes.
Entre 1180 et 1230, un
style particulier se met
en place au nord de l’Europe dont les caractéristiques principales font
écho à l’art antique. Le
style 1200 est un phénomène bien connu, étudié
depuis quelques décennies et les rapports avec
l’Antiquité ont souvent
été mis en avant. Toutefois, peu de modèles antiques spécifiques furent proposés et les questions de la localisation des œuvres
imitées ainsi que modalités et les intentions du processus d’imitation n’ont pas été résolues. Notre travail
propose une vue d’ensemble du style 1200 en focalisant l’étude sur les types de modèles antiques observés par les artistes dans les années autour de 1200.
Nous pouvons conclure à l’observation de vestiges
proches des lieux d’activités des artistes, en Gaule et
en Germanie, et établir des critères esthétiques à l’origine de ce mouvement antiquisant.
How can pictures help people to relate to God,
and what can historical Christian images offer
the viewer today? A compelling theological encounter between Renaissance frescoes and the
modern viewer.
Transformations in Persons and Paint looks at images from the viewer’s position, standing in a series
of Florentine chapels, surrounded by frescoes, and
discovering their powerful capacity to communicate what it means to live in a post-Resurrection
world. Proving that there is still plenty to say about
works by Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi, Masolino, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, and Ghirlandaio, this book uncovers previously overlooked theological content, and
demonstrates the rewards of attentive interaction
between a modern viewer and historical images.
Within the growing body of work on theology and
the arts, this is a rare example of what can happen
when a theological gaze is turned towards some
of the classics in the canon of Christian art, while
speaking directly to the modern viewer. Chloë Reddaway offers a new model of theological viewing,
inhabiting both period and modern perspectives,
and reinvigorating our understanding of the incarnational nature of Christian art by taking account
of the particular physicality of images, especially as
it is experienced through sacred space within and
around them. Through close and imaginative encounters with images, a series of critical-devotional
interpretations transforms beautiful artefacts into
living explorations of the Incarnation and its consequences, the transformation and transfiguration
that it enables, the particularity and interconnectedness of the created world, the generative capacity of liminal and (apparently) empty spaces, and
the nature of vocation and conformity to Christ.

Roman de la Rose Malebouche, assisté par son collège de médisants, à Franc Vouloir, le champion de la
cause des dames. Offert au duc de Bourgogne Philippe
le Bon, le livre constitue l’un des jalons importants du
débat littéraire connu sous le nom de querelle des
femmes, et une défense du concile de Bâle et de ses
thèses alors interdites de diffusion dans les territoires
bourguignons. Le texte du Champion des dames est
conservé dans sept manuscrits dont cinq sont enluminés. Le second manuscrit offert à Philippe le Bon, objet
de cette publication (Paris, BnF, ms Fr. 12476), inaugure
la constitution d’un cycle d’images dont découleront
tous les ensembles suivants. Copié en 1451 à Arras par
Barthélemy Poignare et enluminé par le maître du Missel de Paul Beye (Jean de Namps ?), le manuscrit propose soixante-sept images célébrant les talents et les
vertus des dames. Puisés dans la mythologie, l’histoire
ancienne et contemporaine, la littérature et les saintes
Ecritures, les thèmes développés dans les enluminures
sont très variés et pour certains d’entre eux inédits à
l’instar de ceux de Jeanne d’Arc ou du vol des sorcières
qui trouvent ici leurs premières représentations.
Pascale Charron est maître de conférences en Histoire
de l’art du Moyen Âge à l’Université François Rabelais
de Tours, rattachée au Centre d’Etudes Supérieures
sur la Renaissance (CESR). Spécialiste du XVe siècle,

Portrait tissé, portrait en tapisserie: l’association
des deux termes est inattendue. On craint d’avoir
affaire à un oxymore avancé au hasard, à une
somme de contradictions. Ce serait la rencontre
forcée entre un genre tourné vers la description
naturaliste et un médium visuel caractérisé par
des principes décoratifs et utilitaires. En tant que
pratique sociale à l’époque moderne le portrait
puise sa légitimité dans la sécularisation croissante des sociétés et des cultures européennes.
Il se greffe sur l’intérêt accordé à l’histoire des
individus dans leur existence terrestre, tandis que
la tapisserie depuis ses origines fonde son attrait
sur les histoires fantastiques qu’elle illustre pour
faire prier ou rêver. Le portrait rattache le spectateur directement au monde, la tapisserie l’aide à
s’en détacher. Certes la poétique de cour sert un
discours de fondation familiale et de légitimation
historique, aux enjeux de pouvoir bien concrets
et le plus souvent sanglants, comme dans les tentures à sujets troyens des XIVe et XVe siècles, mais
l’allusion généalogique n’est pas envisagée comme
un obstacle à l’imagination. Les portraits tissés à
l’époque de la Renaissance participent à l’avènement d’une nouvelle sensibilité historique, nourrie
de témoignages pris sur le vif, et supplantent un «
art de mémoire » et ses figures-types. La présence
de personnalités contemporaines dans les tentures dut sembler aussi naturelle que de les voir
peupler les enluminures, les retables et les vitraux:
l’aura ancien de la tapisserie se trouvait amplifié
par l’aura du genre nouveau du portrait. Plusieurs
circonstances et facteurs aident à comprendre
pourquoi la tapisserie fut adoptée comme support
du portrait au cours des siècles. Les études de cas
réunies dans ce volume permettent d’évoquer plusieurs des étapes significatives du développement
du portrait tissé, de la fin du Moyen Âge à l’entredeux-guerres.
Philippe Bordes, auteur de nombreux travaux sur
l’art de l’époque de la Révolution et de l’Empire qui
privilégient une approche sociale et politique, est
professeur d’histoire de l’art à l’université Lyon 2
et membre du Laboratoire de Recherche historique
Rhône-Alpes (LAR HRA).

This book places these
important tapestries in
their historical and cultural context. Part I of
the book examines the
relationship between the Habsburgs and the tapestry industry in the Low Countries, the roles of the
artists who designed the tapestries, the weavers
who made them, and of the tapissiers, the court officials who looked after the royal tapestry collections.
This is followed by four chapters which document
and survey the collections formed by the Habsburg
rulers of the Low Countries: Margaret of Austria, the
Emperor Charles V, Mary of Hungary and Philip II of
Spain. Part II of the book is a detailed catalogue of
thirteen of the most important surviving Habsburg
sets. These include such important tapestries as the
Honours, the Hunts of Maximilian, the Armorials of
Charles V, the Seven Deadly Sins, the History of Vertumnus and Pomona and the Apocalypse. Every tapestry of each set is given detailed analysis and all are
reproduced in full colour in over 100 colour plates.
An extensive Appendix gives many of the original
documents concerning the tapestries as well as the
most important surviving Habsburg tapestry inventories from the period.
The purpose of this monograph is to bring to light a
rarely seen work of art and to apprise specialists of
iconography, literature and myth of its relevance and
uniqueness. The chapters deal with the detailed analysis of the set and its meaning as a whole, the reconstitution of the history of its ownership, the place of
this particular version in the verbal and figurative traditions to which it refers and the role of this ‘tenture’
in the corpus of the Tristan myth. Since the exhibitions
of 2002 and 2007 at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts, woven tapestry has been given place
of prominence; collections have been exhumed from
storage and revealed to the public, accompanied by
handsome catalogues. It is hoped that this contribution comes at an opportune time.

Today, a modest number of Tristanian artifacts may
still be admired in museums and castles. Digital access
to art collections continues to enrich the list with surprises, such as the exquisitely carved fourteenth century ‘Tristan’ bench of the Tallinn Town Hall in Estonia.
Some embroidered work and painted wall decor also
have survived. However, what there might have been
of woven wall hangings on the subject has all but disappeared, with the exception of a modern single-panel Aubusson and the set of seven hangings which constitutes the subject of this book. The Brussels Tristan
Tapestries have never before been studied as a series.
Born in Nottingham, Paul Sandby (1731-1809) is best
known as a founder member of the Royal Academy
and a prominent figure in the development of British watercolour painting. However, he was also one
of the most prolific and inventive printmakers in
eighteenth-century Britain. From his early years as a
draughtsman for the military survey of Scotland, and
later from his extensive tours throughout England
and Wales, he depicted the people, towns, castles
and landscapes of the nation. He provided the public with images of their country which contributed
to the emerging appreciation of native landscape,
to antiquarian interests, and to the development of
picturesque tours within the British Isles. Although he
never travelled abroad, he reproduced the work of
fellow artists who had, tapping into the Grand Tour
market with prints of Ionian antiquities, Neapolitan
landscapes and the Roman carnival. But his work encompassed more than landscape; he could move from
the pastoral humour of illustrations to Allan Ramsay’s
poem The Gentle Shepherd, through the urban realism of his Cries of London to the merciless satire of
his attacks on William Hogarth. From the 1740s to the
1780s he made over 380 prints: engravings, etchings,
soft ground etchings and finally aquatints, a medium
in which he was a pioneer. Aquatint enabled printmakers to reproduce the effects of watercolour paintings;
Sandby gave the process its name and developed varied techniques which allowed the exact reproduction
of the artist’s brush strokes, producing some of the
most beautiful prints ever made in this medium.

Bohemia and Moravia have an outstanding place
in the history of biblical translation. Following the
Slavonic tradition of Great Moravia and the interest in biblical translation ignited anew by the
Church reform in the 15th century, there appeared
in the 16th century a number of new translations
of the bible or its parts into Czech. Most of them
were printed and survived, others are known to
us only due to reports. The present volume traces
transmission of the biblical text in the 16th century
by Czech translators employing humanistic methods. The volume brings translatological analysis
of the works examined, characterization of their
Czech language, new findings about the sources
for the translation and bio-bibliographical information about the authors of the translations. The
breadth and depth of analysis are unprecedented
in the scholarship dealing with Czech humanistic
translations.
Robert Dittmann of Charles University in Prague,
Czech Republic, specializes in the development of
Czech. His main interests are biblical translation in
the Czech lands, Old Czech glosses in medieval Hebrew manuscripts and Czech onomastics. Jiří Just of Institute of Philosophy of the Academy
of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prag, specializes in the Bohemian and Moravian Reformation
in the 16th and the 17th Century and the literary
work of the Unitas Fratrum.

This book is primarily a catalogue of those nearly-intact
extant books containing the
full music of the Mass made
between the date of the
Bohemian Revolution (July
1419) and the Battle of the
White Mountain (November
1620). Two principal religious
factions were active in Bohemia and Moravia during the
period. The larger, the Utraquists, took communion
in both bread and wine. The Roman Catholics, fewer
but still numerous, followed the then relatively recent practice of using bread only. While graduals are
important sources for the liturgy practised by Utraquists and Roman Catholics, many of them are also of
great interest artistically and historically. Some of the
more beautiful books were produced for use by the
literary societies, later incorporated as guilds, which
were responsible for the music in their churches. The
information the books contain about the membership of the guilds, containing as it did most of the social strata of the towns, gives important information
about the contemporary social structure and about
the strength of Utraquism. Individual guild members
often sponsored a page at the beginning of a mass
set which was profusely decorated. The quality of the
art and the evolution in the iconography can be appreciated in the book's 50 colour plates.

que sont les pays wallons, c'est-à-dire, les territoires de
la langue romane situés au nord de la Franc et inclus à
l'époque dans diverses entités politiques (anciens PaysBas, Cambrésis et principauté de Liège). Trois catégories de sources ont été retenues pour cette approche :
la production imprimée, les inventaires de librairies et
les catalogues de bibliothèques privées. Quels auteurs
italiens ont été imprimés, vendus et lus dans les pays
wallons à la première modernité? Dans quelle langue
ont-ils été le plus appréciés, en langue originale ou
par le truchement du français? D'où proviennent les
livres imprimés? Étaient-ils importés ou produits sur
place, et dans quelle mesure? Quels ont été les centres
d'imprimerie wallons qui ont assuré la diffusion du livre
italien? Quel a été le poids de cette production dans
la production globale? Quels ont été les principaux
acteurs de cette diffusion (imprimeurs, libraires, traducteurs, élites locales, ordres religieux) et leur apport
respectif? La contre-réforme a-t-elle eu un impact sur
les politiques éditoriales et le choix des lectures? Les
goûts du lectorat ont-ils évolué avec le temps? Trois
annexes viennent clore cette monographie. Elles fournissent une liste déjà ample des livres italiens en circulation dans les pays wallons au XVIe et au début du

This volume presents a thorough study of the more
than a thousand preserved Danish medieval rural parish churches. It traces the transformations of church
interiors from c. 1450 to 1600 (thus covering both the
emergence and impact of the Danish Reformation) by
interpreting material changes within a broad historical
perspective that highlights changes in religious practices and liturgy. The book explores the spatial and artistic
implications of liturgy as well as the role of the congregation, the donor, and the clergy both in shaping and
disrupting these interiors. It sets out to answer four
basic questions: What did these rural churches look like
by the middle of the fifteenth century? How did they
change from the middle of the fifteenth century to the
end of the sixteenth? How were they used and integrated into public as well as private ceremonies? And
how may these churches have been perceived and experienced by the congregation and clergy?
Johann Haynpol de Zwickau, dit Janus Cornarius (ca.
1500-1558), a publié près d’une cinquantaine d’ouvrages qui sont pour l’essentiel des traductions latines
des grands auteurs médicaux grecs. Sa traduction latine
de l’œuvre intégrale d’Hippocrate parue en 1546 était
cependant l’activité à laquelle il attachait le plus de prix,
et représente en effet sa principale contribution au progrès médical de la Renaissance. L’étude de son apport
à l’édition d’Hippocrate a permis d’accéder à d’autres
textes de Janus Cornarius longtemps passés inaperçus.
L’ouvrage présente les premières données textuelles
conduisant à ces deux découvertes significatives pour
l’histoire intellectuelle et scientifique de la Renaissance
européenne. Il offre en outre la première bibliographie
exhaustive des éditions cornariennes et la traduction
des principaux écrits de Janus Cornarius ayant trait à
Hippocrate.

The subject of this monograph is protest music and
‘dissident’ composers and musicians during the
twentieth century, with a particular focus on the
forms with which dissent may be expressed in music and the ways composers and performers have
adopted stances on political and social dissent. In
the present volume, twenty-one articles by scholars
of different nationalities explore not only the way in
which protest music is articulated in artistic-cultural
discourse and the political matter, but also the role
it played in situations of mutual benefit. Moreover,
the phenomenon of dissent has been investigated
within the contexts of musical historiography and
criticism, approaching the topic from historical, sociological and philosophical points.

This book explores in depth the development of a music collection created by one of the most influential
noble European families under the Ancien Régime – a
family resident in the Spanish and then the Austrian
Netherlands, the territory of the future state of Belgium. Today forming an integral part of the private
family archives kept at Enghien (in the Hainaut region
of Belgium), this exceptional collection of manuscripts
and prints from all over Europe began to expand in
the last years of the seventeenth century, and grew
gradually and continually throughout the eighteenth
century. Analysing this collection has afforded a rare
opportunity to discover and identify musical sources entirely unknown to us until now; these include
works by the Italians Alessandro Scarlatti, Pietro Torri,
and Antonio Vivaldi. With the aid of unpublished archival material, it has proved possible also to relate
and explain how this important music collection was
amassed, and, through the prism of the musical affinities of an aristocratic family, to illustrate the evolution
of taste in eighteenth-century Europe.

Ennode de Pavie (473/474521) est l’auteur de plus de
cent cinquante poèmes de
longueur et d’inspiration
variées, qui datent pour
la plupart de son diaconat
à Milan. Les tentatives de
traduction et les études
isolées se sont multipliées
au cours des quinze dernières années, mais il n’est
guère, à ce jour, de synthèse qui rende compte de
la diversité de son œuvre
poétique, a fortiori de l’existence d’une authentique
veine d’inspiration chrétienne. Ses opera comptent
pourtant une cinquantaine d’hymnes ambrosiens et
d’épigrammes religieuses, dont la spécificité et les enjeux sont passés inaperçus jusque-là. À la différence de
ce qu’on peut observer dans les poèmes mondains, ce
n’est pas l’aristocrate qui s’y adresse à ses pairs, mais le
clerc qui, s’effaçant derrière ses supérieurs ecclésiastiques, y fait œuvre de poète officiel pour le compte de
l’église de Milan. L’étude des épigrammes permet ainsi
de saisir les ambitions politico-religieuses que nourrissaient les dirigeants de l’église milanaise ; quant aux
douze hymnes composés pour l’église locale, ils offrent
une illustration concrète de la vie liturgique à Milan au
début du VIe s. L’ensemble aboutit non seulement à la
réhabilitation d’Ennode de Pavie en tant qu’homme
d’église, mais aussi, à travers la réflexion engagée sur
l’attachement des clercs milanais aux valeurs aristocratiques traditionnelles, à une nouvelle image du clergé
dans l’Antiquité tardive.
Le livre Littérature, politique et religion en Afrique
vandale contient les communications prononcées au
colloque international « Littérature, politique et religion
en Afrique vandale », organisé par Étienne Wolff, avec
le soutien de son équipe de
recherches THEMAM, composante de l’UMR 7041 ArScAn, qui s’est tenu à l’Université de Paris Ouest Nanterre
La Défense les 6 et 7 octobre
2014. Les communications sont présentées ici selon un
ordre thématique. Cet ordre, et le sujet très ciblé du
colloque, font que le livre, plutôt que d’être un recueil
de textes mal liés comme parfois les actes de colloque,
présente une forte unité. Il constitue une synthèse sur
l’Afrique vandale (439-533) qui faisait défaut. Y est étudiée en effet successivement la situation politique (relations avec les Goths et avec l’empire d’Orient), religieuse
(la question de l’arianisme) et culturelle de l’Afrique vandale. Dans le domaine littéraire, une place particulière
a été faite à Dracontius, certainement le plus grand
auteur latin de l’Afrique sous domination vandale, qui,
depuis la publication de ses Œuvres complètes dans la
Collection des Universités de France, est mieux évalué
à sa juste valeur.

Cependant, si son influence
sur des auteurs comme Jérôme ou Isidore de Séville a
souvent été soulignée, peu
d’études ont été consacrées
au rôle théologique, spirituel
et littéraire que son œuvre volumineuse a joué dans le développement de la pensée et de
la langue des écrivains chrétiens d’Afrique durant l’Antiquité tardive. Pourtant, ce rôle est assez bien documenté, comme l’attestent les témoignages, certes parfois
contradictoires, de grands écrivains chrétiens africains
comme Cyprien, Lactance ou Augustin. Aussi nous semblait-il nécessaire de nous interroger à nouveaux frais
sur l’influence de Tertullien sur la littérature chrétienne
d’Afrique du Nord (IIe-VIe siècles), à travers une étude
tant des formes littéraires, des contenus dogmatiques,
que des contextes ecclésiologiques de sa réception. Au
final, les travaux de cette journée d’étude, organisée
dans le cadre du programme de recherche du G.R.A.A.,
« Tradition, évolution et mutation des formes littéraires
en Afrique romaine », offrent quelques éclaircissements à la question fondamentale de la construction,
réelle, imaginaire ou fantasmée, d’une « africanité » de
la littérature chrétienne d’Afrique du Nord.

ou artistiques, tout autant que des objectifs poursuivis.
Comment les exégètes antiques ou médiévaux ont-ils
abordé ce récit de la Création ? Quelle(s) logique(s) du
texte sacré ont-ils dégagée(s) au fil du temps ? Comment problèmes et réponses évoluent-ils à travers les
commentaires en hébreu, grec ou latin ? À l’étude du
substrat scientifico-philosophique doit donc s’ajouter
celle de la mise en forme du texte.

The name of Bernhard Blumenkranz is well known
to all those who study the history of European Jews
in the Middle Ages and in particular the history of
Jewish-Christian relations. Blumenkranz was born in
Vienna in 1913; he left for Switzerland during the war
and obtained a doctorate at the University of Basel
on the portrayal of Jews in the works of Augustine. He subsequently moved to France where his numerous publications revived and renovated the field of
Jewish studies. The international group of scholars
who wrote the fifteen essays in this volume, beyond
paying homage to Blumenkranz’s work, trace the trajectories of various lines of inquiry that he initiated:
Christian theology of Judaism, problems of conversion and proselytism, geography and topography of
Medieval Jewish communities, the representation of
Jews in Christian art. These essays provide both an
assessment of Blumenkranz’s intellectual legacy and
a snapshot of the evolution of the field over the last
sixty years.

– une religion officielle, faisant face, dès lors, à des religions minoritaires. La structuration du continent en
États et la division du christianisme lui-même, entre
le Moyen Age et le XVIe siècle, ont placé les minorités
dans une situation souvent instable et douloureuse.
Ainsi s’expliquent, pour partie, la lutte contre les « hérésies », les guerres de religion, l’expulsion des juifs de
plusieurs royaumes européens (et aussi l’expulsion de
Musulmans de la Sicile et de la péninsule ibérique), la
« question juive » au XIXe siècle et jusqu’à la Shoah.
C’est ce passé que réveille, depuis la fin du XXe siècle,
le débat sur la place de l’islam et les manières de manifester sa foi dans l’espace public.
Les 13 études réunies dans ce volume étudient les
manières dont les États ont traité leurs minorités religieuses. On y voit des politiques diverses envers des
minorités religieuses– répression, encadrement, intégration, tolérance, laïcité, indifférence – ainsi que de
diverses manières dont les minorités ont accueilli les
exigences de la majorité.
Based on the earliest Shiite sources extant, this book
seeks to portray the worldview of the Shia prior to
the crystallization of their beliefs and doctrines.
About a century before the four canonical books of
the Shia were composed, Ahmad b. Muhammad alBarqi (d. 888 or 894 CE), a scholar from the city of
Qum, compiled a large collection of Imamite traditions embracing all aspects of religious life, from cosmogony and cosmology to the minutest details of daily life. This compilation, of which only ten percent has
come down to us, forms one of the earliest Shiite texts
extant, and is the basis for Dr. Vilozny's delineation of
the Shiite worldview in this formative, pre-Twelver
era. Shiite ideology, the author argues, did not grow in
a vacuum but resulted from the fusion of Islamic Arab
elements with pre-Islamic Near Eastern mythic and
gnostic traditions. The book discusses at length three
fundamental notions which permeate every part of
al-Barqi's work: the Shia are God's elect; an eternal
fierce battle is waged between good and evil on both
the universal and individual levels; and the history of
humankind, from before creation to the end of time,
was predetermined by God. As shown by the author,
the Shiite attempt to accommodate all three ideas
within its world perception often resulted in glaring
contradictions to which only partial solutions could be
provided at the time.
Roy Vilozny is a research fellow at The Polonsky Academy for Advanced Studies at The Van Leer Jerusalem
Institute. He currently investigates the role of pre-Islamic mythic ideas in the Shiite canon.

fut, le curé de campagne aimé et respecté. La deuxième partie de l'ouvrage comporte la traduction
actualisée et commentée de textes provenant de
l'ancien Orient (monde anatolien, égyptien, iranien)

D’Hermann on sait seulement qu’il est l’auteur de
ces sermons et qu’il devait être chargé de la bibliothèque du monastère ; on peut supposer qu’il en fut
aussi l’abbé. Reun se situait aux confins de l’Empire,
ce qui serait actuellement l’Est de l’Autriche, près de
Graz. C’était un monastère cistercien de la lignée de
Morimont, fondé en 1129. En plus d’une importante
source historique de la prédication au Moyen Âge, on
trouvera des index et des sous-titres, de quoi nourrir une vie spirituelle aujourd’hui. Les sermons sont
restés inédits pour la plupart jusqu’à l’édition critique
donnée par E. Mikkers en 1986 dans le Corpus Christianorum. Continuatio Mediaeualis (CCCM 64). Des
renvois aux pages correspondantes de l’édition sont
fournis dans les marges de cette publication.
Le traducteur, Pierre-Yves Emery, est frère de la Communauté de Taizé ; depuis plus de quarante ans il traduit des textes cisterciens, à commencer par certaines

The twenty-one essays in this volume, published from
1971 onwards, together with the introductions and
conclusion, treat of the Bible and apocryphal works
in Ireland during the pre-Norman period, from A.D.
600 to 1200. The essays cover developments during
the period from Professor Bernhard Bischoff’s seminal 1954 essay (“Wendepunkte”), on new evidence
for Irish contributions in the field, down to the present day. After an initial survey of research during this
period, attention is paid to the texts of the Latin Bible,
in particular the Psalms and the Four Gospels, and to
the Antiochene influence on Psalm interpretation, as
well as to the rich corpus of Irish apocryphal writings,
some of them very early (Transitus Mariae, so-called
Infancy Narrative of Thomas, texts on the Magi and
a related Infancy Narrative). Special attention is paid
to the creative biblical interpretation of the Psalms
in the early Irish Church A.D. 600-800, and also to
what appears to be an early Irish (early eighth-century) commentary on the Apocalypse. It is hoped that
these essays will contribute to a renewed examination
of early Irish exegesis in this the sixtieth year of the
publication of Dr Bischoff’s 1954 essay.
Martin McNamara studied theology in Rome and
later biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute,
Rome and Jerusalem, and at the École Biblique, Jerusalem. He specialised in the Aramaic translations of
the Hebrew Bible.

Saint-Victor : une abbaye de chanoines réguliers
fondée aux portes de Paris au début du XIIe siècle
par un théologien parisien de grand renom :
Guillaume de Champeaux. L’abbaye devient très
tôt, autour de Hugues, un disciple de Guillaume
au savoir encyclopédique, un centre d’un grand
rayonnement intellectuel et spirituel, ouvert non
seulement aux membres de la communauté mais
à de nombreux étudiants. Ce rayonnement a duré
tout au long du moyen âge, dans les diverses dimensions du savoir de l’époque.
Gautier, d’origine anglaise, en est un membre de
la troisième génération, dans la seconde partie du
siècle. Il serait devenu prieur de l’abbaye dès 1173
et serait mort en 1180. Il se révèle un bon prédicateur, d’une humilité insistante, mais bien au courant de la théologie de son temps, une théologie
marquée par la scolastique naissante.
À partir de plusieurs manuscrits, Jean Châtillon,
en 1975 aux Editions Brepols, a édité de lui vingt
et une homélies. Mais cette tradition manuscrite
comporte encore huit homélies demeurées
anonymes, dont certains indices peuvent faire
supposer qu’elles émanent de Gautier. S’y ajoutent
un sermon de Maître Henri et six sermons de
Maître Maurice. Tout invite à considérer ces deux
auteurs comme des chanoines de Saint-Victor.
Dans leur ensemble ces trente-six sermons ont
pour occasion les grandes fêtes de l’année liturgique. Sans se limiter au thème de la fête, ils
traitent théologiquement à plusieurs reprises du
mystère de l’incarnation du Christ, de la divinité
de l’Esprit Saint, de l’eucharistie… Par ailleurs ils
proposent des enseignements et des exhortations
sur les divers aspects de la vie du chrétien : celui-ci
est invité à marcher à la suite du Christ, à vivre en
fonction de l’avenir et des promesses de Dieu, à
laisser l’Esprit intérioriser en lui amour et connaissance, à se purifier en passant des péchés aux
vertus, à choisir le joug léger du Christ… En vue
d’en faciliter la lecture, il est proposé pour chaque
sermon un résumé qui en indique les accents et
les grandes lignes.

Pierre le Mangeur ou Pierre
de Troyes, maître du XIIe siècle En 1976, Rudolf Goy recensait quelque 1350 manuscrits comportant une ou plusieurs œuvres de
Hugues de Saint-Victor; en 2005 son répertoire des
manuscrits de Richard de Saint-Victor (Bibliotheca
Victorina, 18) repérait 900 témoins. Depuis 1975
ont vu le jour quelque 250 catalogues de manuscrits et des descriptions de fonds de bibliothèques
sont désormais « en ligne »: un travail de « filtrage »
s’imposait. Des catalogues, restés inaccessibles, ont
pu être atteints. L’examen direct de très nombreux
témoins pour l’édition en cours de Hugues au Corpus christianorum a repéré maints textes victorins
encore passés inaperçus. Enfin, d’autres sources de
renseignements devaient être interrogées : descriptions de manuscrits accompagnant des entreprises
d’édition de corpus entiers, répertoires thématiques, introductions des grandes collections.
Un dépouillement systématique de cet ensemble a
permis d’élargir considérablement le nombre des
mss recensés des deux grands Victorins.
Ce répertoire s’est également proposé un relevé
méthodique des manuscrits des « Miscellanées »
hugoniennes, jusque-là sommairement signalés.

Embracing Wisdom proposes a theological interpretation of the Summa theologiae as a spiritual pedagogy ordered to the growth in wisdom and holiness
of preachers and confessors. First it examines the
social and cultural transformations of the late twelfth
and early thirteenth centuries, and the spiritual crisis they occasioned for the Church, which called for
the creation of a new kind of pastoral agent. A picture
is developed of the socio-cultural role of the theologian and preacher which brings to light the rhetorical
means Aquinas deploys to promote the formation of
wise preachers who can mediate the Gospel by means
of new cultural forms. Successive chapters present
the pedagogical structure and spiritual dynamic of
the Summa theologiae in light of these rhetorical
principles, showing how it climaxes in the Christology
of the tertia pars which promotes communion with
and conforming of the whole person to Wisdom Incarnate, transforming the student into an agent of Divine
Wisdom in the world.
As the cult of saints became increasingly important to
the Christian religion during the latter centuries of the
Roman Empire, so too the veneration of relics became
a central element of Christian piety. This book is the
first to explore the historical roots of the cult of relics
in early medieval Ireland, deepening our understanding
of how the pagan Irish adapted to the new religion. Examining the cult of relics from the earliest Irish sources
up to the ninth century, it provides insights into the role
of relics and the culture and people to whom they were
so significant. The volume investigates how the Christian phenomenon of relic veneration developed in early Ireland and it evaluates the continuity between Irish
practice and that on the continent. By offering a new
model of how the cult of relics evolved and by exploring
the extent to which it helped forge early Irish Christianity, the arguments presented here have the potential to
reshape views of the entire period.

of Ireland Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at University College Dublin and is currently a
part-time lecturer in the School of Irish, Celtic Studies,
Folklore & Linguistics, UCD.

Le culte des reliques n’appartient pas aux premiers siècles de l’ère chrétienne, mais, à partir
du IVe siècle, il devint un élément constitutif de
la nouvelle religion. Si l’on peut s’étonner de la
brusquerie du phénomène, qui suppose un bouleversement profond des mentalités, il faut aussi
se demander quelles en furent les modalités. Sans
doute la Paix de l’Église, puis la christianisation
de l’Empire romain, créèrent-elles les conditions
favorables à l’assouvissement de nouvelles aspirations, mais un obstacle a priori insurmontable
n’allait-il pas très vite se dresser devant elles ?
Quelques traditions plus ou moins concrètes existaient, mais dans la majorité des cas, comment
faire pour retrouver - à supposer qu’on y pensât
encore - ce qui s’était perdu ? C’est alors que l’on
se mit à « inventer », à découvrir providentiellement, les corps des patriarches, des prophètes,
des apôtres, des martyrs, bientôt des moines, des
vierges ou des évêques, et jusqu’aux reliques (secondaires) du Christ et de la Vierge. Après avoir
exposé pour elles-mêmes quelques-unes des plus
notables inventions survenues aux IVe – VIe siècles,
ce travail s’attache à en éclairer le mécanisme,
d’abord par une lecture suivie des récits qui nous
en ont transmis la mémoire, ensuite par l’examen
des différents enjeux qu’elles sous-tendent.

Ce volume consacré au diocèse de Chalon-sur-Saône,
troisième diocèse de la
province de Lyon, propose
les notices biographiques
de vingt-neuf évêques et de
plus de quatre cent trente
auxiliaires de l’évêque, dignitaires et chanoines. Le
lecteur trouvera également
une présentation du quartier de la cathédrale, seul quartier ecclésial de
Bourgogne conservé dans son intégralité malgré
les mutilations des siècles. Dans le cadre réduit
d’une ville densément peuplée et ceinte de remparts, l’étude évoque, outre l’église cathédrale, le
cloître canonial, le palais épiscopal et aborde l’épineux problème des cimetières urbains.
Il y aura aussi, à l’avenir, un nombre limité de contributions en anglais, allemand, en espagnol et en
italien. Ces nouvelles dispositions sont destinées
à assurer l’avenir d’une entreprise scientifique de

Le Dictionnaire d’histoire et de géographie ecclésiastiques a été publié jusqu’ici par la maison Letouzey et Ané (Paris), qui a assuré l’édition des tomes
1-31. La maison Letouzey et Ané ayant décidé de
cesser ses activités, la publication sera désormais
assurée par les Éditions Brepols (Turnhout), qui
assument depuis plusieurs années déjà l’accès en
ligne à l’ensemble des notices imprimées à ce jour.
Avec ce premier fascicule (186) du tome 32, le
DHGE se présente sous un jour nouveau, adapté
aux exigences actuelles de l’édition et, pensons-nous, aux attentes de nos lecteurs.
Pour permettre au Dictionnaire de prendre un
nouvel élan, l’équipe de rédaction a été renforcée.
Dans le même but, la décision a été prise de
renoncer à l’ordre alphabétique strict, qui ralentissait considérablement le rythme de publication
du Dictionnaire. Les fascicules à paraître pourront
donc comporter :
1) des mises à jour ou des refontes complètes de
notices antérieurement publiées (lettres A-L) ;
2) des notices absentes des fascicules déjà publiés
(lettres A-L) ;
3) des notices relatives aux lettres non encore
couvertes (M-Z).
Ces modifications sont déjà perceptibles dans
ce premier fascicule : la plus grosse partie est
constituée par les notices en Li- (de Licent à Liu
Ruiting), dont une notice conséquente sur Liège,
cité médiévale, berceau de l’art mosan et des Carolingiens, siège d’un diocèse et d’une principauté
ecclésiastique importants, avant d’être un des fers
de lance de la Révolution industrielle sur le Vieux
continent. Quatorze collaborateurs ont contribué
à cette notice sur « l’Athènes du Nord » et son diocèse.
Mais le lecteur constatera que ce fascicule s’ouvre
par une notice consacrée au cardinal Giuseppe
Garampi (1725-1792). D’autre part, dans les
tout prochains fascicules paraîtront des notices
sur des historiens récemment décédés (comme
Émile Poulat) et des articles synthétisant les acquis de recherches récentes (sur Ste Lucie, Joseph
Masson, Théodose Ier,...). Des index cumulatifs
seront régulièrement ajoutés en appendice aux
fascicules du DHGE, de manière à fournir aux utilisateurs la liste actualisée des nouvelles notices.

En 1967 eut lieu l’inauguration solennelle de la « Chapelle-Mémorial Kongolo »
à Chastre, dans le Brabant
wallon. L’idée d’ériger un tel
mémorial a germé après le
drame de Kongolo le 1er janvier 1962, coûtant la vie à 20
spiritains. Ce que personne
n’avait pu prédire pendant la
phase de financement et de
construction de la chapelle,
c’est le nombre de missionnaires et de victimes civils de la rébellion simba au
Congo qui allait croître de façon dramatique. Sur les
murs extérieurs de la chapelle, une stèle en forme
d’œuf recense les noms de 216 victimes, gravés en
lettres de bronze. Le visiteur du mémorial pour qui
ces faits sont inconnus ne réalisera pas à quel point ils
sont tragiques. Ce qui explique également la nécessité de recherche historique, afin de reconstruire cette
réalité, même lugubre.
La principale question de cette étude porte certainement à savoir pourquoi tant de pères et de sœurs
missionnaires, qui œuvraient au Congo depuis de longues années, furent également les boucs émissaires
de cette rébellion sanglante. Basé sur des sources
éditées et des sources inédites reposant dans divers
dépôts d’archives, l’auteur montre que tout réduire
à une seule cause, relève souvent d’une approche
fautive.
Dries Vanysacker est professeur à la Faculté de Théologie et de Sciences Religieuses à la KU Leuven et coordinateur de l’Unité de Recherche Histoire de l’Église et
de la Théologie. Il enseigne, entre autres, le cours de

Les Recherches sur le symbolisme funéraire des Romains peuvent être considérées comme le pendant
romain de l’admirable Psyche d’Erwin Rohde. Parues
en pleine guerre, en 1942, elles visent à retrouver
au front de certains sarcophages mythologiques et
dans le décor de certaines stèles un écho des théories
philosophiques relatives à l’immortalité de l’âme et à
son ascension dans les sphères célestes, une fois débarrassée de son enveloppe charnelle. Ces théories,
qui avaient fait l’objet de quelques-uns de premiers
travaux de Cumont (Le mysticisme astral dans l’Antiquité, 1909) et d’un premier livre, Afterlife in Roman
Paganism (1922), le retiendront encore dans sa dernière oeuvre, Lux perpetua, parue en 1949, deux ans
après sa mort et rééditée dans cette même collection
en 2010. Précédées par une très riche mise en perspective de la part de Janine et Jean-Charles Balty, les
Recherches sur le symbolisme funéraire des Romains,
longuement mûries par Cumont mais parfois âprement débattues de nos jours, demeurent une somme
incontournable pour l’exégèse de nombre de monuments funéraires d’époque romaine.
This volume brings together all the articles Franz Cumont (1868-1947) wrote on the history of ancient astrology. It is part of the 7 volume Scripta Minora-collection in the Bibliotheca Cumontiana, the edition of
the collected works of the famous Belgian classicist
and historian of religions. The volume also contains a
critical historiographical introduction by the specialist
on ancient astrology, Béatrice Bakhouche, which analyzes the methodology used by Cumont in the context of the scholarship of his own days. The general
introduction also sets Cumont's approach to ancient
astrology against the way scholars now approach this
important current of ancient thought. Danny Praet
further analyzes the Belgian ideological context in
which Cumont wrote on the interaction between science and religion. The volume offers a thematic index,
and an index of ancient and modern authors.
Danny Praet is Professor of Ancient Philosophy and History of Christianity at Ghent University, and editor of the
Scripta Minora-series in the Bibliotheca Cumontiana.
Béatrice Bakhouche is Professor of Classics at Montpellier University, and a specialist on Roman astrology.

(sensescapes), wobei jeweils verschiedene Gesichtspunkte gewählt werden: die Stadt als visualscape, als waterscape, oder soundscape, ja auch
als Ruinenlandschaft. Andere Beiträge thematisieren sinnliche Erfahrung im Stadtraum dagegen
vor dem Hintergrund spezifischer Handlungszusammenhänge wie dem ‚Gehen‘ in der Großstadt
oder städtischen Festen. Schließlich unterziehen
Beiträge zu den Städten Ostia und Ephesos diese
mit Blick auf ihre sinnlichen Erfahrungsmöglichkeiten einem close reading. So eröffnet der Band
in der Fülle der diskutierten Zeugnisse und Annäherungen eine erweiterte Perspektive auf kaiserzeitliche Erfahrungen städtischer Lebenswelt.

This volume contains editions of a series of Tantric
texts in Old Uyghur in the Berlin Turfan Collection.
This volume contains an edition of a corpus of Old Uyghur Tantric texts which is usually called Aparimitāyus-Literature, mainly consisting of two texts, the Āryaaparimitāyur-jñāna-nāma-mahāyāna-sūtra and the
Amṛtadundubhisvaradhāraṇī. The first one is one of
the longest Tantric texts in Old Uyghur and was widely
disseminated in medieval Central Asia via translations
into various languages – Chinese, Khotanese, Mongolian and Tangut. In addition to these, this volume
also includes an edition of some hitherto-unknown
important Tantric texts in Old Uyghur, such as the Vajrasattva-mantra, a description of Tejo-Mahākāla and
the Vajravidāraṇā-nāma-dhāraṇīsādhana. These texts
are crucial to a comprehensive understanding of Old
Turkic language and Central Asian Buddhism, particularly in their contribution to our knowledge on aspects
of late Old Uyghur and Uyghur Tantric Buddhism in
Turfan and Dunhuang between the 13th and 14th centuries. All these texts are provided with an introduction, transcription, transliteration, translation and a
detailed commentary, and the volume concludes with
a glossary and four plates.
This volume contains a complete edition of the Chinese text U 5335 in the Berlin Turfan collection which
is written in Uighur script. It also presents a reconstruction of the Inherited Uighur Pronunciation of Chinese (IUPC) based on U 5335 and other Chinese texts
also written in Uighur script. The book consists of four
chapters: the first begins with a review of research on
IUPC and then discusses Chinese words in the Uighur
translation of the Xuan-zang Biography. Moreover, it
provides analysis and explanations of the phonological characteristics of IUPC. In addition, this chapter
also deals with eight new Chinese texts written in Uighur script other than U5335. The introductory chapter concludes with a discussion of diachronic aspects
of IUPC. The second section deals with the edition of
U 5335 and the reconstruction of the Chinese pronunciation reflected in U 5335. Chapter three discusses
two ways of reading Chinese characters used by Uighurs: IUPC and the so-called “Uighur reading”. The final section of this in-depth study presents a complete
list of IUPC, including U5335 and other Chinese texts
written in Uighur script.

was Professor and Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University and President of Japan Linguistic Society, author of
several books on Old Turkic philology.
The eight studies in this volume by established and
emerging scholars range geographically and chronologically from the Greek Kingdom of Bactria of the
2nd century BCE to the Uighur Kingdoms of Karabalgasun in Mongolia and Qočo in Xinjiang of the 8th-9th
centuries CE. It contains a key study on sericulture
as well on the conduct of the trade in silk between
China and the Roman Near East using archaeological
as well as literary evidence. Other topics covered include Sogdian religious art, the role of Manichaeism
as a Silk Road religion par excellence, the enigmatic
names for the Roman Empire in Chinese sources and
a multi-lingual gazetteer of place- and ethnic names
in Pre-Islamic Central Asia which will be an essential
reference tool for researchers. The broad ranging
theme covered by this volume should appeal to a wider public fascinated by the history of the Silk Road and
wishing to be informed of the latest state of research.
Because of the centrality of the topics covered by this
study, the volume could serve as a basic reading text
for university courses on the history of the Silk Road.
Specialized in Old Turkic philology and Turkic linguistics, Abdurishid Yakup is author of the book "Prajñāpāramitā Literature in Old Uyghur" (Berliner Turfantexte XXVIII, Brepols 2010).
