Our journey to IRELAND
Lycée Jean Macé - Niort Our journey to IRELAND ! OUR JOURNEY TO IRELAND ! Hello, we are students in the English « European Section » (1ère) of Jean Macé High School and we're going to talk to you about the trip that we did with the « literature class » (1ère L2). We went to Ireland for one week from 6th April 2013 to 12th April 2013. To go there we took the bus at the High School at 1 pm on Friday and we arrived in Cherbourg in the evening at about 7.00 pm. Then we took the ferry (Celtic Link) to go to Rosslare (in the south-east of Ireland). In the boat there were four of us in each cabin and the crossing lasted a long time, around 18 hours. But we had a really good time ! At Rosslare we got back on our bus to go to Limerick to meet our host families. The ride Niort-Limerick lasted almost 28 hours in all, but all along we improved the relations in the group, sang, chatted, did ridles, which was fun ! Antoine, Faustine, Florian Living with an Irish family Have you ever been welcomed in an Irish family ? How did it go ? As we arrived in Limerick, our host families were waiting for us. We discovered them at the same time as they were dicovering us ! There were 2, 3 or 4 of us staying in each family. It was therefore easier to speak and to hit it off because we were not alone. When we woke up in the morning, breakfast was ready to be eaten. They prepared a little take-away picnic for lunch time. At around 7pm we were back in our Irish home and then dinner was served. The families were open to speak with us about a lot of different topics to make us find out all about Irish culture, their way of life and their economy. It was a pleasant meeting, which has helped us all to improve our English ! Some of our families were used to hosting lots of strangers or students in their house. For most of us, it has been a very nice experience because they are such welcoming people ! Arthur, Camille, Emma http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! We were in groups of 4 people, of whom 2 pupils came from 1èreL2 and 2 others from the English European Section. Each group had about 10 forms with exactly the same questions. So, in order to know more about this characteristic that is « part and parcel of Irish culture », we asked some Irish people in many public places, like the University College of Cork (UCC), a mall or Galway city centre, which is one of the largest cities in Ireland, what they thought of emigration. http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! We visited the Museum of Emigration, famous for its statue of Annie Moore, located on the sea front. There, we were able to see reconstitutions of what the conditions of life in Coffin ships were like for the emigrants to Australia or America. This museum sums up all the history of the town and of Ireland, from the Potato Famine to the Lusitania being torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat in 1915. Its harbour is famous for being the main Irish emigrants' departure spot in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century because of the Great Famine. It's a historical site of Ireland and it depicts some major events in the history of Ireland. Alban, Hugo, Nabil, Thibaut, Thomas A day in Laurel Hill School On Wednesday, 10th April, we went to a Catholic school to meet our penfriends. When we arrived, some of the students welcomed us with Gaelic Music, and flyers about their school. Then, we sat in a big hall to watch many presentations about their school and their environment with various slide shows. We also presented our country, our city and we played a little music. The first contact was funny, and the penfriends were very warm and welcoming. We also took part in a Camogie match, then we were given a guided tour of the school. Then, they performed a concert for us, with six students playng high quality Irish music in a band. Their group is so talented they even played for their President. Afterwards, we had some lunch with them. It was our first long conversation with the students. I was wery interesting to talk for real with them, and put faces on their names ! In the Afternoon we went to Limerick city center together. It was a lovely welcome and a very nice day. We have all struck up some friendships and we are keeping in contact with many Irish friends. For most students this was the best day ! Claire, Roseline http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! Landscapes that have inspired a lot of legends, stories and folklore... Wich are part of Irish authenticity We were lucky enough to visit many of those extraordinary places. We began with the Cliffs of Moher, Cliffs rising 200 m above the ocean and 8km stretching over. The Cliffs were featured on many films and reports as the very well known «Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince» movie. http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! Généré: 1 October, 2016, 05:14 Lycée Jean Macé - Niort We also visited The Burren where Micheal Cusack Museum is located, with its wild plains. It is also a natural resource of peat which has been used to warm up Irish people during the Potato Famine. Coralie, Guillaume, Thanina http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! Généré: 1 October, 2016, 05:14 Lycée Jean Macé - Niort First we visited the Burren's Smokehouse, which smokes and produces salmon (and other fishes) for the local and international markets. We met the founder and boss of the firm, who explained to us the different stages of the smoking process. There we tasted the different types of salmon smoked. >>>> Delicious !! http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! Généré: 1 October, 2016, 05:14 Lycée Jean Macé - Niort Later on, we went to « EIGHT DEGREES BREWING » factory which produces craft beers. We saw how they produced their beer. And of course at the end of this visit we sampled some delicious beers. http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla! Généré: 1 October, 2016, 05:14 Lycée Jean Macé - Niort Finally we discovered Waterford Crytal Factory. We were amazed to see how real crystal is made, and we were impressed to see how molted crytal becomes a very beautiful, shining and meticulous work of art. Their items are very expensive because their crystal is luxurious! But some of us were allowed to take in their hands and fondle some of their crystal sculpture and their workers are highly trained experts !! We are very enriched by these new experiences gained in Irish firms. And we have been very pleasantly suprised by the open-minded and friendly welcome received everywhere we went. Aurore, Cécilia, Estelle Irish culture Irish culture thrives on a lot of different characteristics: music, dance, food, religion, landscapes, people... Ireland is a wonderful country with extended cultural opportunities. Traditional Irish music is known all around the world: it backs up all major cultural events in Ireland, like their famous national festival, St Patrick's Day, on17th March or St Stephen's Day, on 26th December. Irish players use musical instruments like the harp, the fiddle, the banjo, the bouzouki, the concertina, and the bodhrán. Irish music is followed by traditional dances like jigs and sets, which are danced alone or in groups as for dance dramas and céilidhs. There are also some shows like musical comedies which mix Irish popular dance and music: « Lord of the Dance » has been really famous all around the world since it was launched about ten years ago. http://www.lycee-jeanmace.fr Propulsé par Joomla!
