Adjectives as nouns
CHAPITRE
4
To avoid repeating a noun, you can use an adjective as a noun by placing
before the adjective and one or ones after the adjective. Notice in the following
sentences how one(s) stands for the noun (car, boots), which you don’t repeat.
In English
the
Do you like the red car or the blue one?
I don’t like small televisions. I prefer the big ones.
A Circle the phrase the + adjective + one(s) in the each sentence and underline the
noun it refers to.
1. I cannot see the brick building, but I can see the glass one.
2. This backpack isn’t mine; give me the black one.
3. The gold necklace is more expensive than the silver one.
4. We don’t have to do all the exercises, only the important ones.
5. I’d rather go to the good, affordable university than the overpriced one.
6. Tanasha is wearing her corduroy pants today, not the cotton ones.
7. Do you like this small dog or the big one?
To avoid repeating a noun, you can use an article followed by an
adjective. The article + adjective phrase acts as a noun and agrees in gender and
number with the noun.
In French
Est-ce que tu aimes la voiture rouge ou la bleue?
Je n’aime pas la petite télé. Je préfère la grande.
B Circle the phrase article + adjective in the each sentence and underline the noun to
which it refers.
