Questions juridiques Questions techniques Questions organisationelles Questions financières Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Offres des éditeurs: accès à long terme et lisibilité à long terme des e-journals? • La bibliothèque ou le consortium ne continue plus la licence • Le périodique cesse de paraître • Le périodique change d‘éditeur • La technologie (hardware et software) change: nouveaux formats et fonctionnalités • ... Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Offres des éditeurs: accès aux e-journals à long terme? There are a lot of open technological questions with respect to long-term preservation of electronic data. However, technology is neither the only problem nor will it be able to provide the one single solution. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Technological challenges • Physical preservation of the „bitstream“ „10010101.....“ • Logical preservation to facilitate meaningful interpretation – Depends on data and file formats, software, hardware... Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Most discussed approaches • („Logical“) migration: periodic conversion of each file. • Emulation: „Simulation“ of obsolete hardware on each new hardware generation. • Universal Virtual Computer (UVC): Today, viewers for current formats on a well defined, but very basic UVC are programmed. Only the one UVC has to be emulated in future. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Migration Original: Office97 Office2000 Emulation Original: Office97 on Win98 on HW1999 UVC Viewer Emulation of UVC on HW2004 Office2008 Emulation on HW2010 Newdoc2012 Viewer Newdoc 2016 Emulation on HW2020 Emulation of UVC on HW2020 Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Supplementary measures • Open, international, documented standards. • Registries for formats and soft-/hardware. • Metadata on technology and preservation. • Coordinated print archiving! • Define clear responsibilities in collaboration. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving International projects • • • • • • State archives National libraries Academic libraries and consortia Trusted third party providers Centres of competence and networks Publishers Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Visions of what could be imagined... • A network of university servers – Local repositories for quality-checked grey literature with a common portal. – Hosting a set of journal backfiles for the entitled community. – With a central and/or distributed archiving facility. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries E-Archiv E-Doc E-Doc E-Archiv E-Doc E-Jour E-Archiv E-Doc E-Jour E-Doc E-Jour Conceptual Study E-Archiving E-Doc Portal E-Doc (former or current) subscribers only Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Work within the project • • • • • • Observation of worldwide developments. Check of license agreements. Test of repository software „DSpace“ (concluded) Evaluation of holdings data for printed titles with respect to distributed archiving. Pilote digitization in progress. ...and more Consortium: Deals mainly with large publishers – danger of a gap with smaller ones. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving ...and questions from reality... • What do „the“ academic libraries want? e.g. – Make no own archival effort, but rely on external institutions? – Provide metadata or content for a common grey literature portal? – Support centrally managed vs. locally controlled archival solutions? Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving ...and the hardest questions: • Resources - how much required and available? – Digital preservation will be expensive and a long term commitment– nobody dares to forecast costs concretely. – (Co-)Financed by federal funding?? Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Conceptual Study E-Archiving Next steps: • Questionnaire for consortial libraries – rather detailed – please try to answer it! • The report on the conceptual study is planned for the end of 2004. • Realisation??
