Epson has CAD/GIS in mind with the features
of its new Epson Stylus Pro 4900
Designed with high productivity in mind, the SP4900 allows engineers, architects,
designers construction companies and design departments to easily produce
precise large format line drawings, plans or high quality renderings at speed, and
is compatible with leading CAD/GIS software such as AutoCad and Microstation. This
affordable printer delivers the superior colour gamut and high quality for which the

contacts, particularly through Last Call for Planet Earth, our 2007
movie. Step by step, our know-how is expanding all over the world.
To implement Archiworld®, we have created the Archi-World® Academy,
an unparalleled competition on a planetary scale, aimed at tomorrow’s
architects who will be responsible for sustainable architecture in the
next fifty years. The Archi-World® Academy thus focuses on 450.000
students, our active future members! Addressing their concerns from
previous competitions, we will give them the possibility of realising their

Architecture vs INDUSTRY

That industrial architecture is multifaceted is nothing new. From the old XIXth-century factories, now a part of our urban patrimony
and meticulously renovated, to the « boxes » exhibiting a blatant lack of culture due to their formal gratuitousness… the spectrum
is quite broad. And let us not forget all the random extensions sprouting up along motorways. As far as the industry is concerned,
it is mostly a matter of procedure, building budgets, deadlines to be met, imperatives linked to lasting changes to the production
apparatus, to environmental concerns, to noise control and building maintenance. Faced with these constraints, does the
affirmation of an architectural desire necessarily result in a conflict of interests? Already in the 1980s, Norman Foster and Richard
Rogers succeeding in giving plants a true architectural status. This phenomenon has now expanded to thousands of small projects.
Not so long ago, such projects did not serve any aesthetic purpose, but the evolution of ecological culture – even the importance of
a strong image – has changed all that. It is not unusual to find interpenetration of industrial and tertiary sites, with each element
developing its own typology. Nevertheless, designers do have some sort of « controlled liberty », which is exciting and frustrating
at the same time, because good intentions are often tempered by economic interests. When facing industrialists, regardless of the
project’s scale and sensitivities, architects are no longer satisfied with decorating the production tool, but take up the challenge
of making the functionalities fit the space. They study the circuits, anticipate any future extensions, showcase the entire building
by means of lighting and integrate it in the landscape. As a result of this small revolution, creativity is now applied to the most
unattractive sites, as evidenced by a colourful project presented in this edition.

Que l’architecture industrielle revête de multiples facettes n’est pas en soi un fait nouveau. Des anciennes manufactures du
XIXème siècle, inscrites au patrimoine urbain et réhabilitées avec soin, aux « boîtes » révélant par leur gratuité formelle une
inculture flagrante, l’amplitude est large. Sans oublier toutes les extensions aléatoires qui bourgeonnent au fil des autoroutes.
Parlant d’industrie, il est d’abord question du process, des budgets de construction, des délais à respecter, des impératifs
liés aux mutations permanentes de l’appareil productif, aux préoccupations environnementales, à la maîtrise du bruit et à la
maintenance du bâtiment. Face à ces contraintes, l’affirmation d’une volonté architecturale débouche-t-elle nécessairement sur
un conflit d’intérêt ? Déjà dans les années 80, Norman Foster et Richard Rogers parvenaient à offrir aux usines un véritable statut
architectural. Aujourd’hui, le phénomène s’amplifie aux milliers de petits projets. Il n’y a pas si longtemps, ces mêmes projets ne
se donnaient pas d’objectifs esthétiques. L’évolution de la culture écologique - voire l’importance d’une image forte - a changé
la donne. Il n’est pas rare de constater des interpénétrations de pôles industriels et tertiaires, où chaque élément développe sa
propre typologie. Force est de constater cependant que les concepteurs jouissent en quelque sorte d’une « liberté surveillée ».
Enthousiasmant et frustrant à la fois car les bonnes intentions sont souvent tempérées par les intérêts économiques. S’ils
parviennent à se positionner face aux industriels, quelles que soient l’échelle du projet et les sensibilités, alors les architectes ne
se contentent plus d’habiller l’outil de production mais relèvent le défi de faire évoluer les schémas fonctionnels pour travailler
l’espace. Ils étudient les circuits, anticipent les futures extensions, mettent en valeur l’ensemble de bâti par l’éclairage et l’intègrent
dans le paysage. Cette petite révolution voit la créativité investir les lieux les plus ingrats comme en témoigne un projet haut en
couleurs présenté dans cette édition.

This French practice defines architecture as « an art
committed to society, to the construction of man’s
living environment, based on group work and shared
knowledge. » However, it is extremely perilous
to sum up in a couple of lines the work done by
Architecture-Studio, in France, in China, in the Middle
East and elsewhere, covering almost four decades.

Founded in 1973 by Martin Robain, the Paris-based practice Architecture Studio progressively expanded; it now includes architects, town
planners, designers and interior architects of some twenty nationalities,
centred on twelve partners (Martin Robain, Rodo Tisnado, Jean-François
Bonne, Alain Bretagnolle, René-Henri Arnaud, Laurent-Marc Fischer,
Marc Lehmann, Roueïda Ayache, Gaspard Joly, Marica Piot, Mariano
Efron and Amar Sabeh El Leil). « The desire to forego individuality in
favour of dialogue and confrontation transforms the combination of
individual knowledge into a greater creative potential. » Indeed, with
all its projects, Architecture-Studio displays a group concept where
everyone discusses and presents arguments at important moments,
even if the work is led by one or more partners.
All these projects are the result of a particular expression. Regardless
of the scale or programme – master plans, large structures, tertiary or
industrial buildings, housing, museums, educational buildings – they
are in keeping with the economic, social and cultural fabrics of cities
in order to stimulate their mutation. « Our architecture is some sort of

enigma to the inhabitants and the city, i.e. stories which we allow them
to unravel. » The European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Arab World
Institute (in co-operation with Jean Nouvel) and the Church of Our Lady
of the Ark of the Covenant in Paris are some symbolic projects of the
firm, which is currently restructuring the Maison de Radio France
and the Jussieu Campus in the French capital. The firm is also active
internationally, particularly in China. It has a Shanghai branch since
2005 and a more recent branch in Beijing and a Venice branch since
2009, where its formidable global presence is demonstrated by Ca’Asi,
which is a laboratory for reflection and a meeting place at the same
time. During the 2010 International Architecture Biennale in Venice,
Ca’Asi opened its doors to emerging young architects or young Chinese
architects, for a different perspective on the Biennale’s theme. By doing
so, Architecture Studio remains true to its founding principles, i.e.
promoting architectural debate.
At times, it is a long-drawn-out work, as evidenced by the master plan
for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai (started in 2001) or the design

for the Mecca west entrance, a four-kilometre route which, despite
its huge size, takes into consideration the human scale of this public
space. The Middle East has a variety of projects, the tower of the Rotana
Hotel Abdali in Amman (Jordan), the Souria Towers in Damascus (tow
260-metre-high towers featuring tertiary facilities, a hotel, shopping
centre and gardens), the Mascate Cultural Centre in Oman, the National
Theatre of Bahrain, town planning for the Caspian Pearl in Aktau
(Kazakhstan). Farther east, the firm is proud of numerous projects
in China, high-quality residential properties, the Tobacco Factory in
Shanghai, the Jin Qiao Office Park, the Milaou Island hotel and the
Taiyuan city project extolling the typologies. Although each building is
subject to far-reaching formal variations, dictated by symbolism, the
projects are anchored well in their context. With the help of sixty-odd
collaborators, Architecture Studio thus refines its view on a constantly
evolving Chinese territory and actively participates in the development
of its new architectural landscape.

As a project symbolising the firm, this complex is readily spotted
and identifiable, taking into consideration the morphology of the
environment and the city in Europe. Its architecture expresses the
foundations of Western civilisation.

identifiable, prenant en compte la morphologie de l’environnement,
de la ville à l’Europe. Son architecture exprime les fondements de la
civilisation occidentale.

The building’s overall envelope or “velum” ensures a young and
contemporary image, related to the school’s dynamic nature. Doubling
as a facade and roof, the veil is suspended in the landscape and unites
technological and academic training under its curved shape.
Une image jeune et contemporaine, en relation avec le caractère
dynamique de l'école, est donnée par l'enveloppe générale du
bâtiment, le "velum". A la fois façade et toiture, cette voile hissée
dans le paysage unit sous le déroulé de sa courbe les deux pôles
d'enseignement technologique et académique.

Ce collectif français définit l’architecture comme
« un art engagé dans la société, la construction
du cadre de vie de l’homme, fondé sur le travail
en groupe et le savoir partagé. » Mais il est
extrêmement périlleux de résumer en quelques
lignes le travail d’Architecture-Studio, en France,
en Chine, au Moyen-Orient, et ailleurs, s’étalant

Quels qu’en soient l’échelle ou le programme – plans de masse, grands
équipements, bâtiments tertiaires ou industriels, logements, musées,
édifices d’enseignement - ils s’inscrivent dans les textures économiques, sociales et culturelles des villes pour en stimuler la mutation.
« Nos architectures s’offrent à leurs habitants et à la ville comme des
énigmes, des histoires dont nous donnons des ‘clés’ pour les déchiffrer.
» Le Parlement Européen à Strasbourg, l’Institut du Monde Arabe (en
collaboration avec Jean Nouvel) et l’Eglise Notre Dame de l’Arche d’Alliance à Paris figurent parmi les réalisations symboliques de l’agence,
qui travaille actuellement dans la capitale française à la restructuration de la Maison de Radio France et du Campus de Jussieu. L’agence
développe également son activité sur le plan international, tout particulièrement en Chine. Elle est implantée depuis 2005 à Shanghai, plus

laboratoire de réflexion et lieu de rencontres autour de l’architecture
contemporaine. Preuve de sa formidable ouverture sur le monde. Durant la Biennale internationale d’architecture de Venise 2010, la Ca’Asi
a ouvert ses portes à de jeunes architectes chinois émergents, pour
offrir un regard décalé par rapport à la thématique de la Biennale.
Architecture Studio reste ainsi fidèle à ses principes fondateurs de privilégier le débat architectural.
Le travail est parfois de longue haleine, comme en témoignent le plan
de masse de l’Expo Universelle de Shanghai 2010 (initié en 2001) ou
la conception de l’Entrée ouest de La Mecque, un parcours de quatre
kilomètres qui, malgré son gigantisme, appréhende l'échelle humaine
de l'espace public. Au Moyen-Orient, les projets sont très diversifiés :
la tour du Rotana Hotel Abdali à Amman (Jordanie), les Souria Towers
à Damas (deux tours de 260 mètres de haut mêlant équipements
tertiaires, hôtel, centre commercial et jardins), le Centre culturel de

l'agence s’enorgueillit de nombreux projets en Chine, des résidences

travail sur les typologies. Si chaque bâtiment est sujet à des variations
formelles très poussées contraintes par la symbolique, les projets sont
bien ancrés dans le contexte. Avec une soixantaine de collaborateurs,
Architecture Studio affine ainsi sa réflexion sur un territoire chinois
en constante mutation et participe activement à l'élaboration de son
nouveau paysage architectural.

Behind its minimalist glass and white marble envelope, the centre
showcases its monumental properties, featuring a 18,000 m2 complex,
with a 1,000-seat opera house as the centrepiece.

E merging from a palm tree-filled landscape, this international awardwinning project covers a 40,000m2 surface. A canopy of moucharabiehs
will partly cover it, to filter out any burning sunlight.

surface de 40 000m2. Une canopée en moucharabiehs le couvrira en
partie afin de filtrer les rayons solaires particulièrement ardents.

In Navarre, architects Vaíllo, Irigaray and Galar came up
with a urban waste collect centre, conceived as an
organic, particularly uncommon type of architecture.
A waste-processing plant can be considered a gigantic digestive system, swallowing, classifying and compacting waste before transporting
it with lorries to different treatment and recycling plants. Accommodating very large mechanical equipment (turbines, filters, compactors,
etc.), the building must nevertheless meet the functional requirements
related to its purpose. Consequently, with its particular layout, the
plant shows its innards by means of two large rectangular glazed bays
which allow the process engineering to be seen. Its design aesthetics
enable the building to coexist with its environment. It is not a building

that needs to be hidden, like so many other industrial buildings which
are « blind » or insensitive to the environment. The designers opted for
organic architecture, boasting some biomorphous properties which
highlight its personality.
Because of the noisy activities inside, the envelope consists of several
layers of acoustic insulation. The roof and façades are covered with
large recycled aluminium sheets (2.5 x1.5 m), painted aniseed yellow.
The corrugating aluminium sheets create a bloated shell-like effect, as
a humorous reference to the internal production of gas involved in any
digestion!

En Navarre, les architectes Vaíllo, Irigaray et Galar
ont imaginé un centre de collecte des déchets urbains
comme une architecture organique, particulièrement insolite.
Une centrale de déchets peut être vue comme un gigantesque système
de digestion qui aspire les résidus, les avale, les classe et les compacte
afin de les évacuer par camions aux différents points de traitement
et de recyclage. Abritant des outils mécaniques de très grande taille
(turbines, filtres, compacteurs, etc.), le bâtiment doit cependant obéir
aux exigences fonctionnelles dérivées elles-mêmes du flux. En conséquence, sous sa géométrie particulière, l'usine laisse apparaître ses
entrailles par deux grandes baies vitrées rectangulaires qui mettent
en scène tout l'ingénierie du processus. Grâce à une réelle esthétique
conceptuelle, la construction est capable de coexister avec son environnement. Elle n’est pas de celles qu'il faut dissimuler comme bon
nombre de bâtiments industriels, « aveugles » ou insensibles à l'environnement. Les concepteurs ont opté pour une architecture organique
dotée de certaines caractéristiques biomorphiques capables d'accentuer sa personnalité.
Son fonctionnement interne étant bruyant, l’enveloppe se compose de
différentes couches de protection acoustique. Toiture et façades sont
recouvertes de plaques en aluminium recyclé de grand format (2,5 x1,5
m), laqué dans les tons jaune anis. L'ondulation des feuilles d'aluminium produit une image d’écailles gonflées qui rappellent avec humour
la production interne de gaz liée à toute digestion !

The Finnish Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010
has spotlighted its designer: the architect’s firm JKMM.
As the winning design for the Finnish Pavilion in 2008, the steel-structured huge pot surprises with its scaly shell and airy shape. Floating
on water, it is inspired by Finnish landscapes where nature is present
everywhere. The shiny white marble look is the result of an unexpected, innovative and ecological material: an injection-moulded and 100
% recyclable composite of recycled plastic and paper. The ecologically
built pavilion showcases solutions for future urban architecture: solar
panels, plants, recovery and reuse of rainwater, easy assembly and disassembly.
It is a new, dynamic and original vision of Finnish architecture, offering
a highly developed design purpose, a handy distribution of volumes
and a great sense of space, which the founders of JKMM - Asmo Jaaksi

Mäki-Jyllilä (°1965) – live every day. The four partners started working
together during their studies, before joining up in 1998. Currently employing around twenty people, JKMM is a winning team that has landed
around sixty awards over the past years, and more than 20 first prizes in architecture competitions. The first of which, i.e. the City Library
of Turku, is a remarkable urban project, which successfully inserts
21st-century architecture in a series of far older buildings. After all,
the project’s starting point was to create a new library, meeting future
challenges while taking into consideration its long and rich history.
Finland is experiencing a renewal of a long Finnish tradition of wooden
churches, endorsed by JKMM with the Viikki church. On the outside, the
building’s top part is covered with thick poplar shingles which turn grey
after a while. The only indication of its religious purpose is a truncated
bell tower and a barely visible metal cross.
The Verkatehdas Arts and Conference Centre in Hämeenlinna was proclaimed The Finnish Steel Construction of the Year 2007 and Finnish
Glass Construction of the Year 2008. Verkatehdas is a former 30 000
m2 textile factory, now converted into a cultural centre. Red brickwork,
Corten steel and glass are the main building materials used to emphasize the value of the existing structures.
These projects, and the projects still being studied or being completed,
fulfill a desire to innovate, as well as common sense and technical excellence. Such an architectural approach implies a careful examination
of architectural solutions in every design and scale phase. Passionate
about architecture, the JKMM firm wants to create personalised solutions and new processes for each project, thus avoiding standard
methods. « Our buildings have a human touch. We have a significant
awareness about materials. Respect for people is central to our way
of thinking. Our objective is to deliver buildings which improve over the
years. And sustainable development remains our primary responsibility, «says CEO Teemu Kurkela

La marmite géante à structure en acier surprend par son enveloppe
d’écailles et par sa forme aérienne. Flottant au dessus de l’eau, elle
est inspirée des paysages finlandais où la nature est partout présente.
L’aspect de marbre d’un blanc éclatant est dû à un matériau inattendu,
innovant et écologique : un composite de papier et de plastique recyclés, moulé par injection et 100 % recyclable. Construction écologique,
le pavillon expose des solutions pour l’architecture urbaine future :
panneaux solaires, végétaux, récupération et réutilisation de l’eau de
pluie, facilité du montage et du démontage.
Cette vision nouvelle de l’architecture finlandaise, dynamique, originale,
offrant un sens du dessin très développé, une habile distribution des
volumes et une grande sensation d’espace, les fondateurs de l’agence
JKMM - Asmo Jaaksi (°1966), Teemu Kurkela (°1966), Samuli Miettinen
(°1967) and Juha Mäki-Jyllilä (°1965) - la vivent au quotidien. Les quatre
complices ont commencé à travailler ensemble durant leurs études
avant de s’associer en 1998. JKMM compte aujourd’hui une vingtaine
d’employés. Une équipe gagnante qui a engrangé une soixantaine de
prix ces dernières années, et plus de 20 premiers prix à des concours
d’architecture. Le premier d’entre eux, la Bibliothèque Municipale de
Turku est une remarquable intervention urbaine, ayant réussi à insérer
une architecture du XXIe siècle au sein d'un ensemble d'édifices beaucoup plus anciens. La base du projet était en effet de créer une nouvelle
bibliothèque à la rencontre des défis de l'avenir toute en tenant compte
de son histoire longue et riche. L'ensemble architectonique permet
d'harmoniser présent et passé.
La Finlande connaît un renouveau d'une longue tradition finlandaise des
églises en bois. JKMM y souscrit avec l'église Viikki. A l'extérieur, la partie supérieure du bâtiment est recouverte d’épais bardeaux en peuplier
qui deviennent gris au fil du temps. La seule indication de l'identité religieuse est un clocher tronqué et une croix en métal à peine perceptible.

Ces projets, et tous ceux qui sont encore à l’étude ou en voie d’achèvement, répondent à une volonté d’innovation, de bon sens et d’excellence
technique. Une démarche architecturale qui signifie un examen attentif
des solutions architecturales dans toutes les phases de conception et
d'échelles. Réunissant des passionnés d'architecture, l’agence JKMM
vise à créer des solutions sur mesure et de nouveaux processus pour
chaque projet, fuyant les méthodes standard. Son CEO, Teemu Kurkela,

Quant au Centre des Arts et palais des Congrès Verkatehdas à Hämeenlinna, il a été nommé The Finnish Steel Construction of the Year 2007
et Finnish Glass Construction of the Year 2008. Verkatehdas est une
ancienne usine textile de 30 000 m2, désormais réaménagée en une
institution culturelle. La brique rouge, l’acier Corten, le verre en sont les
principaux matériaux utilisés de façon simple pour souligner la valeur
des structures existantes.

Winner of the SAIE 2010 competition (Wood category), this
highly expressive public building brilliantly illustrates the
possibilities of wood and a relationship with the landscape
in an sustainable context.
For the two partners of Magén Arquitectos, i.e. Jaime Magén Pardo and
Francisco J. Magén Pardo, this project takes into consideration the particular location on the Ebro riverbank. This unusual location and the
topographical characteristics of the site have defined the building’s
configuration in an intense relationship with the city and river. The shape of its roof and the creation of a flat roof indeed suggest a genuine
interaction with the urban space. Aware of the expressiveness and sensory qualities of the materials, the architects highlighted the contrast
between the dense base and the light outer shell, between the blackpainted concrete panels, with their different textures, the surrounding
glass panels and wooden façades. Selected from the very beginning of

the project and using large planks to maximise the expressiveness, ipe
covers façades, lintels, sidewalks, walls and ceilings, in both the interior
and exterior.
As an essential element of the landscaping and main view of the
building, the roof is configured as a point of view on different levels,
connected by ramps and a terrace conceived as an open-air amphitheatre for recreational purposes.
The project’s environmental commitment is evident, not only from
the choice of building methods and materials, but also from the
energy solutions, resulting in lower maintenance costs. Seeing this
sculptural building, fully used by the public, it is clear that the social,
economic and environmental components also have a high architectural quality. As do all the projects of Magén Arquitectos, since the
office’s foundation in 2000.

Lauréat du concours SAIE 2010 (catégorie Bois),
ce bâtiment public hautement expressif démontre avec brio
les potentialités du matériau bois et la relation au paysage
dans un contexte soucieux de l’environnement.
Pour les deux partenaires de Magén Arquitectos, Jaime Magén Pardo
et Francisco J. Magén Pardo, ce projet prend en compte un emplacement particulier sur la rive de l’Ebre. Cette position singulière et les
caractéristiques topographiques du site ont défini la configuration du
bâtiment dans une relation intense avec la ville et la rivière. La forme
de sa toiture et la création d’une plate-forme suggèrent en effet une
réelle interaction avec l’espace urbain. Les architectes ont été sensibles
à l'expressivité et aux qualités sensorielles des matériaux. Ainsi, ils ont
mis en évidence le contraste entre la densité de la base et la légèreté
de l’enveloppe, entre les panneaux en béton teinté en noir, travaillés
en textures différentes, les panneaux en verre continu des fermetures
et les façades en bois. Choisi dès le début du projet et utilisé avec un
maximum d’expressivité en planches larges, de l’ipe revêt façades, linteaux, trottoirs, murs et plafonds, à la fois à l’extérieur et à intérieur.
Elément essentiel dans l'aménagement paysager et image principale
du bâtiment, la toiture est configurée comme un point de vue à différents niveaux reliés entre eux par des rampes et une terrasse conçue
comme un amphithéâtre en plein air pour des utilisations récréatives.
L’engagement environnemental du projet est très présent, non seulement dans les choix constructifs et les matériaux, mais également dans
les solutions en matière d'énergie offrant des coûts de maintenance
réduits. A voir ce bâtiment sculptural dont s’approprie pleinement le
public, on peut affirmer que les composantes sociale, économique et
écologique se doublent d’une grande qualité architecturale. Comme
dans tous les projets de Magén Arquitectos, depuis la fondation de
l’agence, en 2000.

over a decade. John Eyers took me on board to take on our company’s
new challenges, i.e. our foreign expansion and Belgian consolidation.
Still quite present, my father is slowly taking a step back. His contract
negotiation talent, his permit awarding connections, his address book
resulting from his experience of over 50 years are always very much appreciated. They allowed me to avoid the inevitable pitfalls encountered
by all young architects. The presence of three firms in Hasselt, Brussels
and Louvain, with their balanced staffing, facilitated the transition. »

At a meeting in Bologna on the occasion of the SAIE
Selection ‘10 contest, Jean-Michel Jaspers talks about his
offce which is ready to take on any future challenges and his
responsibility as an architect in today’s society.
Initially founded in 1960 by Michel Jaspers, the Jaspers architect’s firm
turned into Jaspers - Eyers & Partners ten years ago, when it was joined by John Eyers and Jean-Michel Jaspers. The highly structured firm
has a staff of 120, allowing it to handle large-scale projects. It is one
of the leading firms in Belgium, capable of drawing up town planning
master plans, office towers, public buildings, cultural or sports centres,
rehabilitation of industrial buildings, etc. « For many firms it is difficult
to make the transition from one generation to another, says Jean-Michel Jaspers. Indeed, their value is linked to the architect’s personality.
It is him whom the clients know and it is him whom they trust. In our
company’s case, it was a smooth transition, after my studies at the
Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and an in-

in the team’s complex organisation and in the building’s final form.
Jean-Michel Jaspers has always been bathed in this philosophy. « We
do not design inviolable works, but rather a pragmatic architecture
which adapts and evolves to meet the occupants’ needs. » From the
renovation of the Woluwe Shopping Center, Belgium’s leading shopping
centre (1968), to the large-scale renovation of the Financial Tower, from
the construction of the Corporate Village near the Brussels airport in
co-operation with KPF London and Storme Van Ranst to the North Light
and Pole Star buildings, two new towers in the Espace Nord: all these
projects meet the current needs in terms of comfort, safety, ecology
and technologies. « While the Espace Nord, which has now become an
example, was developed with a single purpose in mind, most of the
current projects are mixed, in accordance with today’s architecture.
Projects must be assessed in accordance with their era. Our customers
have evolved. What sets us apart from other Belgian firms? Even when
dealing with a single small building, we take the entire neighbourhood
into consideration and start by designing a broader and stronger vision, thus helping our customers to fulfil the necessary formalities with

T&T group on the Tour & Taxis site and also in the Belarusian capital
by an international group. All of which are major urban interventions. «
Being an architect today no longer simply means to design a building.
The duration, disassembly of the materials and their recycling must be
taken into consideration, because laws change and energy performances evolve. A building now involves a much broader approach. « We never
considered a building as an object, but rather as an urban entity, as a
multiplication of functions based on a broader idea. » This long-term vision illustrates the responsibility of delivering a product that never goes
out of fashion. Of enjoying architecture which can safely grow old!

the political authorities or city council. » Moving beyond the inevitable
politically correct community associations, the Jaspers-Eyers firm has
associated itself with leading international architects. For instance in
Liège, where it co-operates daily with Ron Arad to incorporate his ideas
in the central part of the daring Médiacité complex, while ensuring the
follow-up of the implementation. In Brussels, within the scope of the
Heron City project which has sparked so much debate, Jaspers-Eyers is
the partner firm of the Dutch UN Studio (van Berkel & Bos) firm for the
« Entre les Deux Portes » complex, combining a hundred-odd housing
units with 13,000 m2 of shopping spaces. The last urban cancer at the
Toison d’or will finally be eradicated!
« Belgian architects must come out of their shells and sell themselves

Rencontré à Bologne à l’occasion du concours SAIE
Selection 10, Jean-Michel Jaspers nous parle de
son agence prête à relever les défis à venir et de sa
responsabilité d’architecte dans la société d’aujourd’hui.
Initialement fondé en 1960 par Michel Jaspers, le bureau d’architecture
Jaspers devient Jaspers - Eyers & Partners voici dix ans lorsque le rejoignent John Eyers et Jean-Michel Jaspers. Très structurée, l’agence
emploie 120 personnes qui lui permettent de face aux projets de grande envergure. C’est l’une des plus importantes en Belgique, conjuguant
des plans directeurs d'aménagement urbain, des tours de bureaux,
des bâtiments publics, des installations culturelles ou sportives, des
réhabilitations de bâtiments industriels, etc. « Beaucoup de bureaux ne
passent pas bien le cap d’une génération à l’autre, confie Jean-Michel
Jaspers. En effet, leur valeur est liée à la personnalité de l’architecte.
C’est lui que les clients connaissent et c’est à lui qu’ils font confiance.
Dans ce cas-ci, le passage s’est fait en douceur, après mes études à l’AA
(Architectural Association School of Architecture) à Londres et un stage

auprès de John Eyers qui faisait déjà partie du bureau Jaspers depuis
plus d’une décennie. John Eyers m’a pris ensuite dans son sillage afin
de défier les nouveaux challenges de notre bureau, à savoir l’extension
vers l’étranger et la consolidation en Belgique. Toujours bien présent,
mon père prend peu à peu ses distances. Son talent dans la discussion
de contrats, son relationnel lors de l’obtention des permis, son carnet
d’adresses riches de cinquante ans d’expérience sont toujours très appréciables. Il a permis de contourner les pièges inévitables à tout jeune
architecte. La présence de trois bureaux à Hasselt, Bruxelles et Louvain,
équilibrés en termes de collaborateurs, a facilité la transition. »
Perçue au quotidien, la relation homme/architecture, à la base de
l'ensemble des démarches, est présente dès la conception d’un projet,
dans l'organisation complexe de l'équipe ensuite et enfin dans la forme
finale du bâtiment. Jean-Michel Jaspers baigne depuis toujours dans
cette philosophie. « Nous ne concevons pas des œuvres inviolables
mais plutôt une architecture pragmatique qui s’adapte et qui évolue
pour répondre aux besoins des occupants. » De la rénovation du Wo-

Pologne, pour le groupe T&T sur le site de Tour & Taxis et également
dans la capitale de Belarus par un groupe international. De grandes
interventions urbaines.
« Aujourd’hui devenir architecte, ce n’est plus simplement dessiner un
bâtiment. Il faut penser à sa durée, au démontage des matériaux et à
leur recyclage car les lois changent et les performances énergétiques
évoluent. L'approche d'un bâtiment doit dépasser la simple enveloppe.
« Nous n’avons jamais considéré le bâtiment comme un objet mais comme une entité urbanistique, comme une multiplication de fonctions dans
une idée plus vaste. » Cette vision à long terme démontre une responsabilité de livrer un produit qui reste dans le temps bien au-delà des modes.
De privilégier une architecture qui peut se permettre de vieillir !

Called the Zero Energy Tower, the tallest tower in Ghent (119 m) will be
a part of a larger plan combining offices and shops.
Appelée Zero Energy Tower, la tour la plus haute de Gand (119 m) fera
partie d’un plan plus large mixant bureaux et commerces.
luwe Shopping Center, premier centre commercial de Belgique (1968) à
celle de grande ampleur de la Tour des Finances, de la construction du
Corporate Village à proximité de l'aéroport de Bruxelles en coopération
avec KPF London et Storme Van Ranst aux immeubles North Light et Pole
Star, deux nouvelles tours de l'Espace Nord : tous les projets répondent
aux actuelles exigences en termes de confort, de sécurité, d'écologie
et de techniques.
« Si l’Espace Nord, devenu un modèle, a été développé en mono fonctionnalité, la plupart des projets actuels sont mixtes, comme le veut
l’architecture aujourd’hui. Il faut juger les projets par rapport à l’époque. Notre clientèle a évolué. Ce qui nous démarque des autres bureaux
belges ? Même dans le traitement d’un seul petit bâtiment, nous prenons en compte tout le quartier et commençons à dessiner une vision
plus large et plus forte qui aide les clients dans leurs démarches avec
les instances politiques ou les responsables des villes. »
Allant plus loin que les inévitables associations communautaires politiquement correctes, le bureau Jaspers-Eyers s’associe avec des
architectes internationaux très en vue. Exemple à Liège, où il collabore
au quotidien avec Ron Arad pour l’intégration de ses idées dans la partie
centrale de l’audacieux complexe de la Médiacité tout en assurant le suivi de la mise en œuvre. C’est un véritable projet d’aménagement urbain
déployé sur plus de 6,5 ha. Faisant écho à la Gare de Santiago Calatrava,
la Médiacité a été, dès les prémices, envisagée dans une démarche de
développement durable. La construction est même certifiée Breeam,
standard de référence en termes de performance environnementale.

In association with the Belgian SAQ (Arne Quinze) and Archi 2000,
this daring project with its combined functions wants to humanise
the 16-hectare site of the former National Administrative Centre,
in the heart of Brussels.
En association avec les Belges SAQ (Arne Quinze) et Archi 2000, ce
projet audacieux veut, par la mixité de ses fonctions, humaniser le
site de 16 hectares de l’ancienne Cité administrative de l’Etat, en plein
cœur de Bruxelles.

complex adjoining a 17-floor tower was designed in accordance with
the principles of sustainability.

Searching for young talent, the competition is open to students and architects under 40 and is intended to highlight
projects involving a symbiosis with the three major SAIE 2010 themes: solutions aimed at energy efficiency and
sustainable development, solutions using state-of-the-art tools or design aids, solutions ensuring efficiency and
safety in and outside the production site. Last 8 September the jury, with architect Mario Cucinella as president,
selected the 24 prize winners in Bologna, out of more than 200 projects from 37 countries all over the world.
The first eight prizes were particularly diverse this year in terms of culture and personality. As stated by the
president of the jury, these projects, falling into four categories, exhibit the multiple qualities of wood, innovative
concrete technology, the infinite possibilities of metal/glass or the creativity of bricks. The selection committee
was seduced by the undulating and dynamic shapes.

9th Philippe Rotthier European
Prize for Architecture
The 9th Philippe Rotthier European Prize for
Architecture, will reward notable renovations
carried out in Europe during the past five years.
The 2011 Prize will seek to reward projects that
are part of a process of urban renaissance, which
highlight the pre-existing patrimony, improve the
quality of life in neighborhoods and favour mixity.
The prize money is 30,000 euros, made available to
the jury by the prize founder, the architect Philippe
Rotthier. The prize-winning and mentioned projects
will be presented in a catalogue and exhibited
in October 2011 at the Brussels Architecture
Museum, the inauguration of which will be
simultaneous with the prize-giving ceremony.

Low Carbon Restaurant
Competition
The Global Design Competition aims to collect a
broad variety of design solutions for low carbon
restaurants by any means possible, including but
not limited to reduction in the need for electricity,
food product choices, localized power generation
and waste energy capture and reuse.
Toward this goal, entrants are encouraged to
re-envision the kitchen and dining space, not as a
room of separated appliances fulfilling individual
functions, but as a whole functioning system of
cooperating elements in which potential ambient
energies such as passive solar light and heat
and seasonal cold are utilized and waste energy
and materials are recycled in the most efficient
manner.
A grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the
winning design team.

Residential Tower
This competition encourages students to explore
innovative ways of creating an original design for
loft-style residential living conceived entirely in
structural steel, that utilizes innovative systems

efficient curtain wall enclosure that emphasizes
the frame’s slenderness, strength and
transparency in a way desirable for modern loft

A brand new garage door operator called “Magic 600 and Magic 1000” , an upgrade of the Euro overhead-sectional door range
and last but not least a new side-sectional-door will be introduced to the market at the BAU 2011 in Munich.
The new “Magic” garage door operator has an exciting number of
electronic features. All the important features like soft start, soft stop,
power or current time will be automatically programmed by the garage
door operator itself. Features which ensure ease of operation by the
user. If the user needs to alter or change any of the features or needs
to add options like automatic closing, our class leading software is facilitating this by having a clearly defined display for easy programming.
Side-sectional doors are an ideal solution for garages with limited
headroom or where partial opening is required for pedestrian access.
They are also ideal for renovation installations. Having this in mind, we
have reduced the height of the bottom track to just 15mm. This makes
it much easier to install in these applications. We have used only the
best quality materials in the new designs, with steel for the panels and
aluminium for the floor tracks.
The Euro overhead-sectional door range has been further developed by
improving the weather sealing with the addition of a new special inside
cover. This supports the insulation value. Also it improves the smooth
operation of the door.
